Last updated : Nov 2009 Ireland History The history of Ireland is a troubled and often tragic one. The most enduring features of it are an unswerving commitment to Catholicism on the part of the majority of the population, the origins of which can be go back to the pioneering monastic orders of the fifth and sixth centuries. Secondly, there is the uncertainty and instability governing Anglo-Irish relations: Ireland was never so fully conquered that it absorbed or adopted the culture and way of life of its larger neighbour.
Following the monastic age there was a long struggle against the Viking invaders who sought to use Ireland as a base for trade with continental Europe. The Vikings built fortified ports, thereby laying the foundations of some of the major cities, including Dublin, Limerick and Waterford.

The 1916 Easter Rising
The Easter Rebellion, was an armed uprising of Irish nationalists against the rule of Great Britain in Ireland. The uprising occurred on Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, and centred mainly in Dublin. The chief objectives were the attainment of political freedom and the establishment of an Irish republic. Centuries of discontent, marked by numerous rebellions, preceded the uprising. The new crisis began to develop in September 1914, following the outbreak of World War I, when the British government suspended the recently enacted Home Rule Bill, which guaranteed a measure of political autonomy to Ireland. Suspension of the bill stimulated the growth of the Citizen Army, an illegal force of Dublin citizens organised by the labour leader Jim Larkin (died 1948) and the socialist James Connolly (1870-1916); of the Irish Volunteers, a national defence body; and of the extremist Sinn Féin . The uprising was planned by leaders of these organisations, among whom were the British consular agent Sir Roger David Casement, the educator Padhraic Pearse (1879-1916), and the poet Thomas MacDonagh (1878-1916).

Key events in Northern Ireland history

Ireland has been divided administratively since 1922 when the Irish Free State was formed 12th century First involvement by England in Irish affairs when the Earl of Pembroke, known as Strongbow, intervenes in a local dispute in Leinster in 1170 . King Henry II lands the following year. English expansion continues and in 1177, Ulster is conquered by soldiers led by John de Courcy. 14th/15th centuries English expansion halted and then reversed. Everything outside is regarded as savage, giving rise to the expression 'beyond the pale'. 16th century First Henry VIII and then Elizabeth I take an increasing interest in Ireland. Colonisation increases again, sparking off several rebellions late in the century. Northern Ireland History
Northern Ireland History with its continued conflict and troubles is a bloody and violent one for a country so small, and yet so divided. Northern Ireland it seems, has always had a history of conflict, and the Northern Ireland Troubles as they are now known, are in my opinion simply a manifestation of years of political, social and religious division. On this website, I hope to provide you with two important elements, the first being an accurate history of Northern Ireland and the second element, will be my own experiences of growing up in Northern Ireland from 1958 to the present day. I would like to share my own personal insight of someone who was born into "The Troubles," went to school during them, worked through them and eventually got married and raised a family. It wasn't always easy, and many times I thought I should go and live somewhere else, but something about this small country kept me here, despite the madness that surrounded me.
Northern Ireland History - Introduction
Northern Ireland consists of six counties which are; Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Londonderry and Tyrone. Three more counties then form the province of Ulster and these are Cavan, Donegal and Monaghan.

Early Christian Ireland
Monasteries founded in Ireland in this era This period has often been characterised as Ireland's golden age. With the coming of Christianity under Saint Patrick Ireland built many monasteries, made many documents (Such as the Book of Kells ) and generally saw a period of peace and relative prosperity, in comparison to its European counterparts.
