About Zydeco Back To Welcome Page Site Map The Louisiana Iris Louisiana Irises are increasingly recognized as native plants exceedingly well adapted to garden culture. They also make fine water garden plants and love aquatic or bog conditions. While sometimes referred to as water irises, their only real requirement is to stay damp and not dry out. Louisiana iris cultivars grow well in virtually the entire country, and the color range is the widest of all the iris groups. Hybrid Louisiana irises are derived from five North American iris species: I. brevicaulis, giganticaerulea, fulva, nelsonii, and hexagona. Zydeco Louisiana Iris Garden offers the hybrid introductions of Patrick O'Connor of Metairie, Louisiana, who specializes in good garden irises and pond plants. The introductions of other hybridizers are available as well. What You'll Find On This Site. The site was designed as a hub for information on Louisiana irises . Start at one end and using a good spade, dig around the green stems, keeping in mind that the rhizomes underneath are spreading out a ways, so do not cut in too close or you will slice into them. Make a wide circle around a group, lift them out and lay on paper or plastic. Only dig out as much as you will handle that day.
Gently shake off some soil, and observe where the underground growths have separations. Break them apart, so that all the new plants have roots and foliage. If a couple small ones are joined, do not worry...leave them until the fall or next year. Be sure to separate mainly the large ones which are joined.
Replant into the bed, which you have worked up with additions of dried compost or any organic material you have or buy. Space them 8 inches apart, having the rhizome just below the soil line. Planting too deep will give you absolutely no flowers. That is the key to success with iris! In the future, please do this task in late summer, early fall, so that you do not interfere with the spring flowering.

This year we have 6 new Arilbred introductions from Sharon McAllister that we are pleased to offer you. Additionally, we will once again be introducing 3 gorgeous new Tall Bearded selections from John Bruce.

Transplanting Iris
Transplanting Iris- A Complete Guide
Transplanting iris is a very easy task. Many people feel the iris bulbs are some of the easiest to transplant.
There are mainly two different types of irises and both can be transplanted with ease. These two types are the bulbous and rhizomatous iris. As per the name, the bulbous types of irises grow from the bulbs. This type contains most of the English and Dutch variety of irises. The rhizomatous types grow from rhizomes. Rhizomes are horizontal stem kind of structures that grow underground. The plant stores the food in these rhizomes. The most common iris is the bearded iris and it falls into this category. So does the beardless Japanese and Siberian iris.
The foliage must have flowered and wilted for the bulbous kind of iris to be transplanted. If you are planning on transplanting iris bulbs, you need to prepare the ground extensively. One has to carefully dig and even fork the ground. Put some manure and compost into the ground. Some general fertilizer will help a lot as well.
The other kind of irises would the rhizomatous irises. The best time to transplant these irises is sometime in the late summer in July and all the way to the end of September. The rhizomatous have one slight problem. After three to four years, the number of plants increases and they form a large clump of plants. These plants produce much lesser flowers than they used to. It is at this time that the clump has to be divided and replanted.

Hollyhocks Alcea setosa
Job 30:4 talks about the people collecting mallows. Today, we know these plants as Malva and Alcea plant genera. The leaves from these plants were used in soups and salads. The wild hollyhock (originally called Holy Hocks by the Crusaders) is seldom available as seed today. Most gardeners will settle for our cultivated hollyhock, Alcea rosea to represent this plant family. Special note: This plant is ravaged by leaf miners every year. It is best to surround this plant with others that will conceal its foliage. Find one of the "single-flowered" cultivars rather than the newer "powder puff" cultivars since it will be closer to the original wild variety. [Usually acts as a biennial.]
Cultivation : Plant in any good garden soil. It is winter hardy to -30°F
Holy Thistle Silybum marianum
Cultivation
: This plant will grow anywhere thistles are likely to grow. It is best to treat it as an annual and remove it completely each year.
Hyacinths Hyacinthus orientalis
The Song of Solomon 6:2 mentions the gathering of lilies. Botanists believe the lilies referred to were really wild hyacinths. These are sweetly scented and bloom in blues, purples, and bluish whites. They are native to Palestine. The Dutch took them home and have developed many brilliant colors for us today. For the sake of authenticity, grow only those that bloom in the blues and purples of the wild variety. [A word of caution when planting: use gloves because many people experience allergic reactions to handling the bulbs.]
