Irish Mythology - Legends and Myths
Irish mythology comes to us through the great Irish myths and legends that were passed down by the druidic oral tradition until about the 7th century, when the Irish monks began recording them - a process which continued for centuries. Due to the fact that Ireland was literate so early there are many surviving stories of Irish mythology. These tales are grouped into four chronologically based "cycles": The Mythological Cycle - The oldest stories, these detail the conquest and settlement of Ireland by six distinct peoples (or races of gods) from earliest times until the arrival of the Celts (the Irish). The Ulster Cycle - Popular and exciting, these stories of Ireland's early days include the exploits of Cuchulainn and his fellow warriors and the Tain (the Cattle Raid of Cooley), perhaps the most famous of all Irish tales.

RETURN TO CONTENTS PERSIAN MYTHOLOGY wgdavey@zianet.com Preface The importance of Persian mythology lies both in its similarity to Indian legends and to the differences that are found. Many names are almost identical but roles may be reversed; most interestingly, the name of the Indian King of the Gods is found as that of a minor Persian demon. This may be a consequence of telling an ancient dispute from first one side and then the other. Indo Europeans in the Middle East But other Indo Europeans entered this diverse region and their history is poorly known. Particularly interesting is the fact that though the Hittites were mentioned in from the Bible, their very existence was doubted until the amazing excavations in Turkey brought them to light. And now we know that these people created a powerful empire and fought with Egypt, one of the greatest of the powers in this region. But the Hittites were not of pure Indo European origin as shown by the mixed nature of their language and their story is a good indication of the complex struggles that must have occurred. And here, but to a lesser extent than in Persia, we find some names of gods also found in India. Other Indo Europeans in this area include the Kurds and Armenians, and further east we find some of the tribes of Afghanistan that are closely connected with the many similar peoples of Pakistan and India. We doubt that they can contribute to our search for old Indo European myths.

Syllabus Instructor:
Ronald Hicks (BB-317, 285-2443, rhicks@bsu.edu) Optional Text:
The Celtic Heroic Age, edited by John T. Koch in collaboration with John Carey, 4th ed., Aberystwyth: Celtic Studies Publications, 2003. Course Description:
ANTH 360/560. Irish Mythology. (3) Introduces the Irish mythological cycles, the primary characters, the nature of the religion, and its relationship to ancient Irish life. Objectives:
This course will familiarize students with Irish mythology and to lead them toward an understanding of the nature of Late Iron Age Irish culture as reflected in the tales, with an emphasis on the interrelationships between religion, the agricultural cycle, the landscape, and social organization. Rationale:
After Greece and Rome, Ireland has the largest body of ancient literature of any country in Europe. Although most of this appears to have been put into writing between the seventh and twelfth centuries, from the details of language and motifs it seems clear that much of it took form within oral literature several centuries earlier. While the tales include stories of voyages, cattle raids, pursuits, feasts, places, and the like presented as though they are historical records, modern scholars are agreed that they are essentially mythological in their content. They are, in fact, our best clues to the nature of the pre-Christian Irish religion. However, they are not easily interpreted. Typically, discussions of the ancient Irish religion tell of the gods, their traits, and their deeds. But there is much more in the tales.
