Culture Most of the Israelites' culture was based on their religion, Judaism. The only thing the Israelites did for fun was they danced and played music. Ekron This is a pot and dome from a shrine in Canaan. This is a statue of a god during the time of the Israelites. In Ancient Israel the arts were either religious or made to help their daily life. Most of their music was also religious. The Israelites are known for their creative dancing, though. They danced when they won wars, and at most religious ceremonies. Agricultural Holidays There are two main agricultural holidays: Passover and Shavuot. In Passover the Israelites could not eat anything that had flour in it. The Israelites had no time to let the bread rise so they had to eat 'Matza'. Matza is bread without yeast, which means it is flat bread. Shavout is based on the first fruit of the seven species: wheat, barley, grapes, figs, olives, and dates. Museum Lobby Africa China India ... Israel : Culture
The society of modern Israel has various sources, but the majority of these sources stem ultimately from Judaism and the modern political movement called Zionism. Crystallizing in the late nineteenth century as a response to both the repression of Jews in Eastern Europe and the non-Jewish European nationalist movements of the time, Zionism called for the reversal of the Jewish dispersion and the "ingathering of the exiles" to their biblical homeland. Although only small numbers of Jews had resided in Palestine since the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans in A.D. 70, the "new Yishuv" or prestate Jewish community in Palestine, dates from 1882 and the reached from Russia of a group called Hibbat Tziyyon intent on settling the land as part of its fulfillment of the Zionist ideal. Email this page to a friend Culture Israel is an extraordinary land of incomparable beauty, with a rich and varied history that spans thousands of years. Although slightly smaller in size than New Jersey, Israel boasts an astoundingly diverse geography, characterized by lush northern valleys, low coastal plains spotted with magnificent beaches, and central mountains that lead into the scoured and windswept sands of the Negev Desert. The Mediterranean climate yields long, arid summers, and brief, crisp winters. Israel guards a myriad of unspoiled wonders, including the Maktesh Ramon, a naturally formed crater molded by erosion and pressure; Mushroom Rock, a comically fungi-shaped formation located in Timna National Park; the Jordan River; and, of course, the Dead Sea. Situated at nearly 1,300 feet below sea level, the Dead Sea not only occupies the lowest point on the surface of the earth, but it also measures a higher saline concentration than any ocean by over seven times. In addition to the natural splendor that has enticed visitors for millennia, Israel's location between Africa and Asia has made it a convenient stop for traders and explorers. Until the 2nd millennium B.C.E., the land was mainly occupied by nomads grazing their herds and farmers tending small crops. The Babylonians and the Egyptians came soon afterwards and established trade routes, importing foreign goods and customs into local culture. The increased commerce proved that the land was both strategically positioned and quite valuable, thus giving rise to a cycle of competing factions striving to manipulate the economy.

OK. Enough with the quiz. If you are looking for some culture my Israel culture page might be useful.
Since I’m very far from being an expert on cultural issues I will only give you the raw data about the most important cultural institutions in the country. Although you can find theater music and dance companies in all areas of the country - Tel Aviv is definitely the cultural center of Israel.
Israeli Theater
Israel has several important theaters and many more fringe theaters. The most respected and well known theater is the HABIMA. The name simply means "the stage". This theater was actually formed in Moscow in 1918 as a Jewish theater but later on established itself in Tel Aviv and in 1958 became the national theater of the country. In the early days of the Habima Theater its artistic philosophy developed to include movement and sound and abandoning the purely realistic approach.

Israel Culture
Israel is an old-new country, small in size, but with a culturally active, heterogeneous population. Four thousand years of Jewish heritage, a century of political Zionism and six decades of modern statehood have contributed to the development of an Israeli culture which reflects worldwide elements while striving for an authentic identity of its own. Cultural expression through the arts in Israel is as varied as the people themselves, with literature, theater, concerts, radio and television programming, entertainment, museums and galleries for every interest. There are various activities, offering professional talent of international standard alongside a wealth of opportunities for aspiring artists and amateurs. A largely immigrant society, Israel's creative expression has absorbed many different cultural and social influences, as it blends tradition and innovation, and strives to steer a course between Israeli particularism and universalism. The constant search for cultural identity is expressed through creativity in a broad range of art forms, appreciated and enjoyed by a great many people as part of daily life.

Israel Culture
Today was week two of Israel. The kids began by working on coloring sheets of kids dressed in traditional clothing and listening to music from Israel. They gathered in a circle and were each given a map of Israel and a sticker book. The teacher today was a mom who spent three years living in Israel, speaks Hebrew and had wonderful things to share. She talked to the kids about a variety of holidays, items, clothing, words and customs from Israel. As she talked about each thing she had them place a sticker on the map. There were times she asked the kids to share what they knew about something like the story of Haaman and Esther and Noah's Ark and Passover. We also discussed certain elements of Jewish culture and she shared some of the customs from her own home and experiences.
Then the kids got to stamp out their names in Hebrew and to learn that Hebrew is right right to left instead of left to right. They had some Israeli cookies and we looked at a photo albulm from this mom's time in Israel. I liked the pictures of floating in the Dead Sea. Then they looked at pictures of art from a variety of artists while the other mom explained about the different artists and their work. She did a real nice job making it real to the kids. They finished up with making a dredel and playing with them.
It was very rewarding and extra special to have a mom who lived in Israel able to teach the class. I have to get moving on our class next week on Israeli government and history.
