GEOGRAPHY
Israel is located at the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. It is bounded on the north by Lebanon, on the northeast by Syria, on the east and southeast by Jordan, on the southwest by Egypt, and on the west by the Mediterranean Sea (see fig. 1 ). Before June 1967, the area composing Israel (resulting from the armistice lines of 1949 and 1950) was about 20,700 square kilometers, which included 445 square kilometers of inland water. Thus Israel was roughly the size of the state of New Jersey, stretching 424 kilometers from north to south. Its width ranged from 114 kilometers to, at its narrowest point, 10 kilometers. The area added to Israel after the June 1967 War, consisting of occupied territories (the West Bank see Glossaryand the Gaza Strip) and annexed territories (East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights) totaled an additional 7,477 square kilometers. The areas comprised the West Bank, 5,879 kilometers; the Gaza Strip, 378; East Jerusalem, 70; and the Golan Heights, 1,150. Data as of December 1988

Metropolitan areas
As of 2004, The Israeli Central Bureau of Statistics defines three metropolitan areas: Tel Aviv (population 2,933,300), Haifa (population 980,600) and Be'er Sheva (population 511,700). [7] Jerusalem may also be considered a metropolitan area, though its limits are hard to define since it spans communities in Israel proper and the West Bank, both Israeli and Palestinian, and even the boundaries of Jerusalem city itself are disputed. As of 2005, the official population of Jerusalem city is 706,368. POLITICS AND LAW Israel is a democratic republic with universal suffrage that operates under the parliamentary system.

Location Israel is located in the Middle East, along the eastern coastline of the Mediterranean Sea, bordered by Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Egypt. It lies at the junction of three continents: Europe, Asia and Africa. Geography Long and narrow in shape, the country is about 290 miles (470 km.) in length and 85 miles (135 km.) in width at its widest point. It covers an area of about 21,596 sq km (about 8338 sq mi). Although small in size, Israel encompasses the varied topographical features of an entire continent, ranging from forested highlands and fertile green valleys to mountainous deserts and from the coastal plain to the semitropical Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. Approximately half of the country's land area is semi-arid. Elevation
Lowest Point: Dead Sea (408 Meters below sea level)
Highest Point: Har Meron (1,208 Meters above sea level)
Water The scarcity of water in the region has generated intense efforts to maximize use of the available supply and to seek new resources. In the 1960s, Israel's freshwater sources were joined in an integrated grid whose main artery, the National Water Carrier, brings water from the north and center to the semi-arid south. Ongoing projects for utilizing new sources include cloud seeding, recycling of sewage water and the desalination of seawater.

    Geography Small Area; Short Distances
With Lebanon to the north, Syria to the northeast, Jordan to the east, Egypt to the southwest and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Israel's area within its boundaries and ceasefire lines is 10,840 square miles (27,800 sq. km.). Long and narrow in shape, it is some 290 miles (470 km.) in length and about 85 miles (135 km.) across at the widest point.
Mountains and plains, fertile fields and desert are often minutes apart. The country's width, from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Dead Sea in the east, can be crossed by car in about 90 minutes; Jerusalem, in the Judean Hills,is less than an hour's drive from Tel Aviv on the coast; and the trip from Metulla, in the far north, to Eilat at the country's southern top takes about nine hours. The distance between Jerusalem, at an altitude of 2,739 feet (835 m.) above sea level, and the Dead Sea, which lies about 1,300 feet (400 m.) below sea level, cah be driven in less than one hour.
The coastal plain runs parallel to the Mediterranean Sea and is composed of a sandy shoreline, bordered by stretches of fertile farm-land extending up to 25 miles (40 km.) inland. In the north, expances of sandy beach are occasionaly punctuated by jagged chalk and sandstone cliffs which drop sheerly to the sea. The coastal plain is home to over half of Israel's more than 5 million people and includes major urban centers, deep water harbours, most of the country's industry and a large part of its agriculture and tourist facilities.
