Israel History The Zionist movement, calling for an independent community for Jews in Palestine , began in the 19th century, and in 1917 Britain declared its support for the idea . In 1920 the League of Nations placed Palestine under British administration , and the British government was immediately faced with the rival claims of Jews who wished to settle there and the Arabs who opposed them. In 1937 Britain proposed separate Arab and Jewish communities ; this was accepted by the Jews but not by the Arabs, and fighting broke out between them.
Creation of Israel In 1947 the British plan for partition was supported by United Nations, and when Britain ended its Palestinian mandate 1948, an Israel was proclaimed , with David Ben-Gurion as prime minister. Neighbouring Arab states sent forces to crush Israel but failed, and when a cease-fire agreement was reached 1949, Israel controlled more land than had been originally allocated to it. The remaning of Palestine, known as the West Bank, was controled by Jordan, and Gaza Strip wa controled by Egypt.
The creation of Israel encouraged Jewish immigration on a large scale , about 2 million having arrived from all over the world by 1962 . Hundreds of thousands of Arab residents fled from Israel to neighbouring countries, such as Jordan and Lebanon. In 1964 a number of Palestinian Arabs in exile founded the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), aiming to overthrow Israel.

The ruined Crusader castle of Vadum Jacob is situated in the north of Israel, overlooking the crossing of the ancient road of the Via Maris with the Jordan River.
The well-documented castle was built and destroyed within eleven months (October 1178 - 29 August 1179). The decisive attack on the castle, commanded by Saladin himself, commenced on 24 August 1179. The defenders fought valiantly but failed to safeguard it. The Muslim sappers succeeded in breaking through the walls and killing 800 of the 1500 defenders, throwing their corpses into a deep well.
Twenty three years later, at dawn, 20 May 2002, a thundering earthquake tore the castle apart moving its Eastern half by 1.5 meters in comparison to its Western part. Home About Archaeological Project Geological Project ... Picture Gallery

The Zionist movement is started in Basel, Switzerland. Zionism's goal was to establish "for the Jewish people a home in Palestine secured by public law". November 2: The Balfour declaration , a letter by the foreign secretary Arthur James Balfour to the English Zionist leader lord Rothschild, gives support to the Zionist case. The Jews organize their own social and political institutions, which exercise much control over their own population.

    Israel Pulling Out of Gaza
Comments (0) Israel is rapidly pulling its troops out of the Gaza Strip as Hamas halted its rocket attacks across the border into southern Israel.  The fragile cease fire between the bitter enemies is playing out just in time for the inauguration of Barack Obama who, mysteriously, never staked out a public position on the Israeli offensive in Gaza which began on December 27th in response to continued rocket attacks against it by Hamas.  Speculation abounds that the Israeli government seeks to start off with a clean slate, so to speak, in dealing with Obama, free of the international controversy surrounding the Gaza operation. The usual chest thumping is following the military conflict with Hamas claiming victory as a result of what it is terming an Israeli retreat , despite taking huge casualties from the fighting, and Israel touting the damage it inflicted on its enemy.  Meanwhile over 1,300 are dead as a result of the fighting.  More

Background
Get Involved Divestment from Israel Lobbying Congress ... Resources The dispute between Israel and the Palestinians is one of the longest unresolved conflicts in modern history. Beginning with the declaration of the state of Israel in 1948, for more than 58 years the conflict has cost thousands of lives, involved neighboring countries in major wars, and unsettled the politics of the entire region. Palestinians and Israelis, the United States, and most of the world want the conflict to end. Given the almost universal desire for peace, Global Exchange believes that understanding the obstacles to peace is crucial, and that it is our role as a human rights organization to call attention to dimensions of this conflict that have been historically neglected in the United States. This is especially important because so many Americans want the United States to play a constructive role in ending it. Some of the obstacles that stand in the way of peace have received much attention in this country. Suicide bombings directed against Israeli civilians have been massively condemned, and the Palestinian leadership subjected to relentless diplomatic, economic and military pressure from both Israel and the U.S. to find and arrest the bombers. Global Exchange condemns violence directed against civilians, and we mourn the deaths of all innocentsIsraelis who have been the victims of bombings, and the much larger number of Palestinian civilians killed by the Israeli military and by settlers.

Medinat Yisra'el is a republic in southwestern Asia and is located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. In Christian times after the Romans took control and forced the people into captivity, the area was re-named Palestine . This was done in an effort to injure the inhabitants by referring to the Phillistines who were an old enemy that had been destroyed by the Babylonians under Nebuchadrezzar II from Iraq
The country is bounded on the north by Lebanon , on the northeast by Syria , on the east by Jordan , and on the southwest by Egypt . Its southernmost tip extends to the Gulf of Aqaba, an arm of the Red Sea. The republic was established in 1948. It covers an area of about 21,596 sq km (about 8338 sq mi). Agriculture consists of mixed farming under irrigation, dry farming, and grazing of animals, most of the area giving returns if properly irrigated. Industry is carried on in several ways - by communal settlements, cooperatives and villages where each settler owns his own property. Products include grain, cotton, grapes, bananas and especially citrus fruits which form the chief item of export.

The History of Israel is rich with moments of high influence and world changing events. From the start of the world to the current day, Israel has witnessed days of greatness and days of great turmoil. Below you will find a non-exhaustive list and description of these key events.
Israel History - Early Biblical Events
Abraham: An early historical figure linked to the worlds top three religions Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. He was called by God to operate in faith and obedience in order to father the nation of Israel. From his obedience, Israel was born.
Slavery in Egypt: After Abrahams great grandson, Joseph, was deserted, enslaved, and imprisoned, he eventually became second in command of the nation of Egypt. However, after his death, a future king of Egypt would forget about him and rage in hatred toward the Israelites. As a result, the nation of Israel would be enslaved for four hundred years.
Freedom from Slavery: After four hundred years in slavery, God raised up a deliverer for the nation in a man named Moses. Moses would dramatically lead the nation out of Israel through the supernatural power of God.

The following timeline of Israeli history ranges from 1501 to 1800 where the first Jewish ghetto is established in Europe, the Ghetto of Venice. King Sigismund I of Poland abolished the law that required Jews to wear special clothes. The Ukrainian Cossack massacred 200,000 Polish gentry and Jewry. Jews were allowed back into England during this time of Israeli history and the Jewish population worldwide was estimated at 1,200,000. By the end of this era, most of the Jews lived in Russia, Prussia, and Austria when the American Revolution gained religious freedom and President George Washington sent a letter to the Jewish community in Rhode Island envisioning a country "which gives bigotry no sanction. . .persecution no assistance." France granted full rights to the Jews and allowed them citizenship while the Pale Settlement for the Jewish population of the Russian controlled Poland was created.
The Golden Age of Yiddish and Hebrew literature ranged from 1801 to 1900, as Hebrew was a revived spoken language. Jews were emancipated in many countries, as they were formally recognized as a culture. Hebrew Colleges were started, while Hebrew men were elected into offices for the first time in democratic governments. The first wave of Jewish immigrants started to build in the homeland of Palestine with Jewish population growth at 7.7 million worldwide. The rise of persecuted Jews began in Russia and the Ukraine.

History
Israel Table of Contents ON MAY 14, 1948, in the city of Tel Aviv, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the Declaration of the Establishment of the State of Israel. The introductory paragraph affirmed that "Eretz Ysrael (the Land of Israel) was the birthplace of the Jewish people. Here they first attained statehood, created cultural values of national and universal significance, and gave the world the eternal Book of Books." The issuance of the proclamation was signaled by the ritual blowing of the shofar (ram's-horn trumpet) and was followed by the recitation of the biblical verse (Lev. 25:10): "Proclaim liberty throughout the land and to all the inhabitants thereof." The same verse is inscribed on the American Liberty Bell in Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The reestablishment of the Jewish nation-state in Palestine has been the pivotal event in contemporary Jewish history. After nearly two millennia of exile, the Jewish people were brought together in their ancient homeland. Despite the ancient attachments of Jews to biblical Israel, the modern state of Israel is more deeply rooted in nineteenth- and twentieth- century European history than it is in the Bible. Thus, although Zionismthe movement to establish a national Jewish entityis rooted in the messianic impulse of traditional Judaism and claims a right to Palestine based on God's promise to Abraham, the vast majority of Zionists are secularists.

Subsequently, the Israelis defeated the Arabs in a series of wars without ending the deep tensions between the two sides.
