  • Origins The Sicilian School Religious poetry The Spontaneous Development of Italian Literature ... Article sources
  • Origins At the end of the 5th century, when the western Roman empire waned, Latin tradition was kept alive by writers such as Cassiodorus, Boetius, Symmachus. A new kingdom arose at Ravenna under Theodoric. The liberal arts flourished, the Gothic kings surrounded themselves with masters of rhetoric and of grammar. There remained in Italy some lay schools, and some extraordinary scholars, such as Magnus Felix Ennodius, a poet more pagan than Christian, Arator, Venantius Fortunatus, Venantius Jovannicius, Felix the grammarian, Peter of Pisa, Paulinus of Aquileia and many others. The Italians who were interested in theology gravitated towards Paris. Those who remained tended to be attracted by the study of Roman law. This furthered the later establishment of the medieval universities of Bologna, Padua, Vicenza, Naples, Salerno, Modena and Parma; which, in turn, helped to spread culture, and to prepare the ground in which the new vernacular literature would develop. The tenacity of classical traditions, the affection for the memories of Rome, the preoccupation with political interests, particularly shown in the wars of the Lombard communes against the empire of the Hohenstaufens, and a spirit more naturally inclined to practice than to theory combined to influence the development of Italian literature.

ITALIAN LITERATURE. Origins. - One characteristic fact distinguishes the Italy of the middle ages with regard to its intellectual conditions - the tenacity with which the Latin tradition clung to life (see Latin ). At the end of the 5th century the xiv. 29 northern conquerors invaded Italy. The Roman world crumbled to pieces. A new kingdom arose at Ravenna under Theodoric , and there learning was not extinguished. The liberal arts flourished, the very Gothic kings surrounded themselves with masters of rhetoric and of grammar. The names of Cassiodorus , of Boetius , of Symmachus , are enough to show how Latin thought maintained its power amidst the political effacement of the Roman empire. And this thought held its ground throughout the subsequent ages and events. Thus, while elsewhere all culture had died out, there still remained in Italy some schools of laymen,' and some really extraordinary men were educated in them, such as Ennodius, a poet more pagan than Christian, Arator Fortunatus , Venantius Jovannicius, Felix the grammarian

    13th and Early 14th Centuries
Meanwhile another native, original type of poetry had appeared, a devotional poetry inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, whose Canto dell' amore (Canticle of Creatures) sings of love for all of God's creation rather than for any single human being. The same feeling was expressed in a collection of legends in verse, Fioretti (Little Flowers), based on the life of St. Francis. Other Franciscan poets followed in the 13th century, among them a poet with a Dantesque imagination, Jacopone da Todi, among whose beautiful hymns are the famous "Our Lady of the Passion" and "Stabat Mater." Dante is one of the great figures of world literature. He is remarkable for the loftiness of his thought, the vividness and fluency of his verse, and the boldness of his imagination. He was one of the founders of Italian literature through his use of the vernacular for some of his greatest works. About 1304 he wrote in Latin De Vulgari Eloquentia (Concerning the Common Speech), in which he advocated the use of Italian as a literary language.

    Origins and development
The modern language of Italy is naturally derived from Latin , a continuation and development of the Latin actually spoken among the inhabitants of the peninsula after the downfall of the Roman Empire. It is still disputed how far this spoken Latin was identical with the classical literary language of Rome , the Latinus togatus, and how far it was a merely popular tongue, the sermo rusticus. social conditions , predominating. A small number of words derived from Greek are in part relics of the epoch of Byzantine domination, in part introduced later through the Crusades and through commerce; the Saracenic invasions have left traces in a very few Arabic words, chiefly in Sicily ; a certain number of words have come indirectly from the Latin through French caused only a comparatively slight influx of words of Germanic origin. In the "De Vulgari Eloquentia" (i, 10-16), Dante speaks of the "many discordant varieties of the Italian vernacular", and rejects them all in favour of the "illustrious

Italian Literature page: This limitation is reflected also in the assumption of Ernesto's lover that Ernesto, like most teenage boys who engage temporarily in homosexual activity, will eventually marry even though he knows that he himself never will. He sees his sexuality as a part of his social identity. The emergence in Italy in the 1980s of two highly successful and openly gay writers has begun to compensate in part for the spectral presence of homosexuality in Italian literature in the past. Although neither Aldo Busi (born 1948) nor Pier Vittorio Tondelli (1955-1991) can be regarded as gay activists, both have brought homosexuality firmly into the public domain. Sponsor Message.
