There are a number of Italian texts, both classic and contemporary, that are must-reads for anyone interested in the history, culture, and language of Italy. A Place to Live
A wide-ranging collection from one of the foremost Italian writers of the 20th century. With an unerring eye and unparalleled eloquence, Natalia Ginzburg observes everything around her, sparing no one, least of all herself. In these essays Ginzburg writes honestly and insightfully about being a writer and mother, being displaced during World War II, and experiencing deprivation in postwar Italy. zSB(3,3)

The Franco-Italian 'Berta and Milon' (Ms. Marc. XIII)
Charles held great court at Paris, his residence; there are many dukes, counts and barons, and there was also Bernard of Clairmont. With [Bernard] is one of his sons, Milon: (9030) there is no more handsome youth who puts on spurs, neither wiser nor of better sense. The King dispensed justice to the two evil felons; the French and Burgundians talked of them, and the Normans and men of Mans and Britons. (9035) In the court was Duke Naimes: he is the counsellor of Emperor Charlemagne. Great joy was made nearby and in the court; Charles took care of his sister as he should. There was no land, neither on a hill nor on a mountain, (9040) which didn't give fealty to the Emperor. And the Pope returned to Rome; he praised Charlemagne above all things. Charles' seneschal was Milon, who was the son of Bernard of Clairmont. (9045) He was still a youthful bachelier; and Berta, [Charles's sister,] who had a clear countenance, placed all her hopes in him. If you will wait until the story's done, I will have told you in this romance (9050) the whole story of Roland's birth; How his mother and father fled like criminals through foreign lands wandering the world. They were banished from all realms.

    Soc. Sci. 2, room 137
Instructor: Irene Zanini-Cordi Course Description: Tales and fables of love, lust, and amorous conflict have left an impressive trace in Italian literature. Following this theme, we will analyze the development and the reciprocal influence through the centuries of three literary genres that have played an important role in the Italian literary tradition: the novella, the fairy tale, and the short story. We will approach these brief texts both from a formal and a thematic perspective; we will examine the connections between literature, politics, anthropology, and history. To what extent can we think of the tale as "historical testimony"? Is the fairytale simply a flight of fantasy? What does the short story have to say about contemporary Italian culture and relationships? To answer these and other questions, the course will survey an array of texts ranging from the thirteenth century to the present. Week 1: Introduction to the course; to the history of the short story and fable. Introduction to the

Italian Literature The Cantico delle Creature (Song of All Creatures) written by St. Francis of Assisi in 1225 is the earliest known literary work written in the Italian language. In the XIVth cent. lived and worked three of the greatest figures in Italian literature: Dante Petrarch and Boccaccio , father of the novel, whose Decameron is a mirror of merchant-class life of the times and characterises single individuals by focussing on the things they do; this work became a genre model for centuries that followed. In the XVth and XVth cents. poems of chivalry were much in vogue, comprising epic tales of heroic deeds in faraway times: Torquato Tasso in his Gerusalemme Liberata Jerusalem Freed ) of 1575 revived the genre into a veritable masterpiece of its kind. Treatises also abounded during these two centuries and in his Principe The Prince ) of 1513 describes this role figure in a realistic manner: his political merits are his strong point, along with cynicism and resolution. Machiavelli is famed for paving the way towards politics as a separate branch of learning conceived of as a skill to be acquired for solving practical problems. The XVIIIth cent. saw the reform of the theatre with

    Influence of the Bible
As in other European cultures, the Bible became known to the Italian literary and cultural world through the Latin Vulgate, which was extensively studied in medieval times and, to a lesser extent, in the humanist period of the 15 th th centuries. Fragmentary translations of the Bible into Italian, based on the Vulgate, were made in the 13 th century. Translations in an entirely separate category were those made by Jews from Hebrew into , written in Hebrew characters. These translations lacked literary or aesthetic value, and were used exclusively by Jews, although they may also have been known to gentiles during the 12 th and 13 th centuries. They are important for the study of the history of Italian dialects and the phonetics of the Italian language: among them are the translations of the Psalms, Song of Songs, Amos, Jonah, and Habakkuk. Two examples of translation into Italian from the Vulgate are the Splanamento de li Proverbi di Salomone , written by Gherardo Pateg (early 13 th century), and the
