An archaeological field school has been an important component of the international research project and excavations at Poggio Colla since their inception in 1995. This site, an important settlement that spans most of Etruscan history (7th-2nd centuries BC), is located in the Mugello, about twenty miles north-east of Florence. The project is sponsored by Southern Methodist University, Franklin and Marshall College, and the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology. SMU in Italy: Arts and Culture
    Program web site: www.smu.edu/abroad
Students study drawing, the history of art, and European theatre.
From Rome, the group will move to Orvieto, a medieval hill-town in Umbria, about seventy miles north of Rome. Excursions by train and bus are spectacular ruins of the ancient Roman harbor city of Ostia Antica, to the splendidly preserved late medieval city of Siena and the thrilling early Renaissance city of Florence, both in Tuscany, and to a broad range of important monuments in the magnificent city of Rome. In addition, there will be an optional weekend trip to Venice (Venice trip not included in program cost).
SMU-in-Italy is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good standing from SMU or any other accredited college or university. Knowledge of the Italian language is not required; however, priority is given to students who are interested in Italian studies.

Italy Archaeology Program Summary: Dates: May 14 - June18 2011 Location: Italy Cost: approximately $2,500 inc Description: Summer 2011 A RCHAEOLOGICAL FIELD SCHOOL, Palazzaccio, (Lucca), Italy This program consists of a four week excavation campaign of an Etruscan settlement and Roman villa near Lucca, Italy. The program welcomes students from all disciplines and may be of particular interest to students of Anthropology, Archaeology, Art History, Classics, Computer Science, Fine Arts and History. The field school centers on the excavation of an ancient Roman farmhouse called ‘Palazzaccio’, one of more than 100 ancient Roman farms identified in the plain of Lucca (Tuscany) and often referred to collectively as the ‘rural Pompeii’. The historical and archaeological significance of these ancient farms is of such importance that the entire plain of Lucca has been officially designated a protected archaeological zone. Through our field school, UNCA is now a collaborative partner in Forum UNESCO’s international effort to excavate and preserve these farms. Students will receive an intensive introduction to all aspects of field excavation techniques, from methods of discovery and recovery to documentation, the creation of site plans and interpretation of stratigraphy. In addition to work in the field, students will process excavated material in a laboratory and also be trained in the fundamental techniques of artifact recording and illustration. The program will also incorporate visits to local museums and lectures by Etruscan and Roman archaeologists.
