Italy : Culture
Distinct regional and cultural differences in Italy make it impossible to draw a unified picture of daily life. A Milanese businessman's day differs considerably in both style and pace from that of his Neapolitan counterpart. Nevertheless, some general observations may be made. An considerable survey of people over the age of 14, undertaken in 1988 by the national statistical agency, ISTAT, showed that Italians spent almost half of their time either eating, sleeping, or cleaning and grooming. In general, men enjoyed more free time than women, who spent more time shopping, working, and attending to the needs of their families. While women spent an average of four hours per day doing domestic work, men spent only 50 minutes. Girls over the age of 14 studied more than three times longer than boys of the same age. According to the ISTAT survey, Italians on the average devoted less than half an hour per day to intellectual activity and a mere eight minutes to political, religious, or volunteer activity, while more than 85 % of the population spent nearly two and a half hours per day watching television. Similarly, nearly two hours per day were devoted by more than 60 % of the population to meeting friends and relatives. These figures reflect the dramatic secularization of Italian society. The overall figures, belie valuable behavioral variations. For the more urban areas the emphasis has shifted to entertainment, particularly in the home. Television ownership is widespread throughout the nation, and increasing numbers of Italians own video recorders. On the other hand, fewer Italians go to the cinema than before, and participation in sport and physical activities is low, indicating a strong element of passivity in leisure time activities

    Italy People
People of Italy : Most Italians are native-born and identify closely with specific regions of Italy. Italian includes small clusters of German-Italians, French-Italians, and Slovene-Italians in the north and Albanian-Italians and Greek-Italians in the south. This is predominately a Roman Catholic population , with some Protestant, Jewish and Muslim immigrant communities.
Arts, Culture and Music of Italy : From antiquity to modern times, Italy has played a central role in world culture . Italians have contributed some of the world's most admired sculptures, architectural masterpieces, paintings, literature , and music (specially opera). Italians consider themselves the descendants of the ancient Romans and are very proud of their cultural heritage. Regional differences do persist mainly because of natural geographical boundaries and the disparate cultural heritage handed down from the Greeks, Etruscans, Arabs, Normans, and Lombards. Regional pluralism is evident in the local dialects, holidays, festivals, songs, and in the regional cuisine. The Culture of Italy revealed in the ancient relics and historical remnants, reflects the spirit of enlightenment and elegance existing among the people at that time. Flag of Italy :
Three equal vertical bands of green (hoist side), white, and red characterize the Italian Flag. It is very similar to the flag of Ireland, which is longer and is green (hoist side), white, and orange. It is also similar to the flag of the Cote d'Ivoire, which has the colors reversed - orange (hoist side), white, and green. The French flag brought to Italy by Napoleon in 1797, is however said to have inspired Italy's flag.

Venice: Hotels Overview Transports Sightseeing ... Cost of Living Culture Arts and culture abound in Venice . The culture survives on Venices grandiose past. Venice was the home of Vivaldi and the center for the world of music during the 16th century. Music is a large part of the Venetian culture . The PalaFenice holds performances during the opera season, although it is sometimes overshadowed by Verona . The Frari Church features recitals from May thru October, except in August. A wonderful spot for viewing and listening to Venices artistic talents is in the Scuola di San Rocca. The Accademia of San Rocco performs Baroque music on period instruments regularly. Tickets can be bought in person or by calling (941) 523-4864. Theatre is also found readily in Venice . The Venetian commedia dell`Arte, performed at the Teatro Goldoni is a must see if you enjoy Venetian comedy . Keep in mind, however, that opening night events normally book well in advance, and you must reserve seats at the theatres box office. If you are looking for a more alternative approach to theatre, the Teatro a l`Avogaria has been offering experimental theatre since 1969. In keeping with the ideas of Giovanni Poli, who was the theatres guiding light, they do not sell tickets, but ask only that spectators offer a small donation. Classical ballet can be found at the PalaFenice, Tronchetto island. Other than this, there are no major dance performances to be found in

TUSCAN WALKING FESTIVAL
September 28th, 2010
Views: 211 We are pleased to present the “Walking Festival”, which brings together the pleasure of walking with culture, history, food and music in the 6 Natural Parks on the Tuscan coast. Throughout September and October 2010 the Festival includes a packed programme of walks in the Natural Park of Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli, which extends over an area of about 24,000 hectares (59,000 acres) in the provinces of Pisa and Lucca.
The area is dotted with coastal areas, woodlands and marshlands of particular interest, with extensive beaches, beautiful pine forests, mixed woods, ilex groves and wetlands containing many rare plants. Such varied habitat ensures that the area is populated by a wide variety of wildlife, ranging from aquatic animals and amphibians to reptiles, waders and mammals. Fai is a non-profit foundation that aims to contribute to the protection, preservation and enhancement of Italy’s artistic and natural heritage. Learning About Italy Culture
As it is with many countries in Europe, Italy culture plays an important role in the lifestyle you'll lead should you choose to retire in this fantastic foreign location. Perhaps more so than any other country in the European Union, understanding the local culture is very important to blending in and feeling comfortable and welcome here. Arguably, the number one value of the Italian culture is the family unit. Family is the strong stabilizing unit of the social structure, providing both financial and emotional support for each other. In the northern part of the country, typically only the nuclear family is in a single household. However, in the south, you'll find that many extended family members may live under the same roof. In tune with family values is the strong sense of religion and faith. While you may not be Roman Catholic and no Italian is going to berate you for that, the influence of the church in daily life is very high. Every day of the year has at least one patron saint, and children are often named after these. While Italy culture has evolved so that church attendance is relatively low, relationships in Italy follow traditional religious beliefs. One thing that I've learned from experience is that style and appearance matter a great deal in Italy culture. In this country, your first impression will be the lasting one, as Italians tend to assess your age and social standing based on your appearance, including your demeanor and projection or confidence, within the first few minutes of meeting you.
