J ainism is one of the oldest religions. A detailed discussion of Jain history would be very long. It covers many different periods of history. I have divided the time-scale into seven periods so that we can correlate the events within the Jain history, and can also relate the history of Jainism with other events in India and outside of India. You will note that several famous philosophers were contemporary of Lord Mahavira, and that 13-15th century was the age of reform in India as well as in Europe. I t should be recognized that as we go back in time, it becomes harder and harder to date events exactly. The dates I have given below, have been taken from several different sources. W e must distinguish between tradition and history. Tradition is the info- rmation that we have received through oral or written tradition. History on the other hand, is an analytical but approximate science. A historian takes a critical look at the information available to come to a conclusion. It is common for the historians to disagree.

The soul is constrained to a cycle of rebirth, trapped within the temporal world ( saṃsāra ), until it finally achieves liberation ( mokṣa ). Liberation is achieved by following a path of purification. In Jain philosophy , karma not only encompasses the causality of transmigration, but is also conceived of as an extremely subtle matter, which infiltrates the soul —obscuring its natural, transparent and pure qualities. Karma is thought of as a kind of pollution, that taints the soul with various colours (

Jainism
What Is Jainism?
Numbers: One of the oldest religious traditions of India, Jainism has existed side by side with Hinduism throughout its long history. With fewer than 5 million adherents and comprising less than 1% the Indian population, Jainism has demonstrated a remarkable tenacity and endurance and continues to exert an influence far beyond its small numbers.
Founder: Jainism (the name derives from a Sanskrit word meaning "follower of the Jina, or conqueror") was established in our era by Mahavira ("the Great Hero") in the sixth century B.C.E. In fact, Mahavira is considered only the most recent in a list of 24 such teachers who brought Jainism into the world during previous great cosmic eras of time. These teachers, or "Tirthankaras," taught a path to religious awakening based on renouncing the world by practice of strict religious austerity. Mahavira established a monastic community of both nuns and monks. This community is the oldest continually surviving monastic community in the world.
Main Tenets: Jains reject belief in a creator god and seek release from endless reincarnation through a life of strict self-denial. The title of Jina is given to those who are believed to have triumphed over all material existence. As all human activity accumulates karma, the force that perpetuates reincarnation, the only way to free one's jiva, or soul, from the bondage of material existence is by reducing this activity through ascetic practice. In addition, Jainism places a special emphasis on ahimsa ("non-injury") to all living beings. The concern for life is extended to all creatures, even minute microbes that are not visible. The Jain ideal is a mendicant ascetic who takes extreme measures to avoid injuring all creatures. Monks and nuns are sometimes seen with muslin cloths over their mouths to keep out flying insects, and they are enjoined to use small brooms to gently sweep away living creatures from their path, so as to not accidentally crush them.

A Brief Introduction to Jainism First Online: April 01,2001
Last Updated : June 15,2010 Along with Buddhism, Jainism is the most important reform movement to separate from the main body of Hinduism and establish an independent unit. The word is derived from Jina ("Victor," or "Conqueror") implying final victory over bondage to life's misery. Jainism has the universal message of nonviolence. The absence of a creator god in Jainism can be understood as a reaction against the nature worship of early Vedic religion, the priestly order of Brahmanism, and the theology of the Upanishads. Jain arts and architecture has enriched the artistic heritage of India. Jainism was founded by Rishabha, and attained a major status in India at the time of Mahavira , who was born in about 599 B.C. in Northern India, in the town of Vyshali, in the present day Bihar , in a royal family. When he was about 30 years old, after he had been a householder, Mahavira decided to abandon his aristocratic surroundings in favor of an ascetic life. He cast aside his fine raiment, gave away his treasures, and embarked upon a severe regimen. For twelve years he underwent castigation, enduring bodily and spiritual injury, and emerged a teacher of many monks, a renowned preacher, and a profounder of a new religion. Chief among the tenets of Jainism is the deification of Mahavira. The

Jainism
A form of religion intermediate between Brahminism and Buddhism , originated in India in pre-Christian times, and has maintained its heretical attitude towards Brahminism down to the present day. The name is derived from jina , conqueror, one of the epithets popularly applied to the reputed founder of the sect . Jainism bears a striking resemblance to Buddhism in its monastic system, its ethical teachings, its sacred Lassen Weber , Wilson, Tiele, Buddhism and to place its origin some centuries later than the time of Buddha Buddhism and, perhaps, is the more ancient of the two. The many points of similarity between the two sects are explained by the indebtedness of both to a common source, namely the teachings and practices of ascetic monastic Brahminism . Of the reputed founder of Jainism we have but few details, and most of these are so like what we read of the beginnings of Buddhism that one is strongly led to suspect that here at least one is dealing with a variation of the Buddha-legend. According to Jainist tradition , the founder lived in the sixth century B.C.

Welcome to Jain Meditation. This site provides and shares Gurudev Chitrabhanuji's experience of meditations and insights, and throws light on our self-created limitations.
He shows ways to break through negativities and escapist patterns of thinking.
In this breakthrough, there is freedom and celebration. He is not only a Master lecturer, but an enlightened spiritual teacher to millions of
seekers in search of truth, and self-realization. Continue here QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
When a healthy person is in a state of confusion, even with all the info the mind has collected, the mind will still be restless to find out what the truth is. If we were to repeaat again and again the process of listening to others and reading everything we could, we would still be looking for the truth. Why? Because the PERSONAL EXPERIENCE is missing: the interaction between what you heard with your head and what you experienced through your heart. Before anything can be truly recognized as "your truth" it must be not only heard in the mind but most importantly, experienced in the heart and mind. Chitrabhanuji
