Jainism
The word Jainism comes from the Sanskrit word for saint "jinah" which dreives from "Jayati" meaning "he conquers" - thus they are conquers of mortal bondage. Along with Hinduism and Buddhism, Jainism is one of the three most ancient of India's religions still in existence. Although Jainism has [fewer] followers than Hinduism and Sikhism it has had an influence on Indian culture for over 2,500 years, making significant contributions in philosophy, logic, art and architecture, grammar, mathematics, astronomy, astrology, and literature. Lord Mahavira is regarded as the last of a line of 24 holy and spiritually enlightened beings, the Tirthankaras. Mahavira was born in India in 599 BC. At the age of thirty he gave up his life as a wealthy prince and became a religious asceti. He was a reformer and propagator of the religion. Jainism arose as a separate religion in India. It was founded at least at the same time as Hinduism or even before that (as some historians believe). At the heart of right conduct for Jains lie the five great vows:
  • Nonviolence (Ahimsa) not to cause harm to any living beings
  • Truthfulness (Satya) to speak the harmless truth only
  • Non-stealing (Asteya)not to take anything not properly given
  • Chastity (Brahmacharya) not to indulge in sensual pleasure
  • Non-possession/Non-attachment (Aparigraha) complete detachment from people, places, and material things.

Jainism (pronounced jayn-izm ), traditionally known as Jain Dharma , is a dharmic religion with its origins in the prehistory of India , still practiced today by several million people. Jainism has as its religious ideal the perfection of man’s nature. The universe is seen as being eternal—having no beginning and no end—precluding God from being a creator. Perfection of the individual is achieved through the practice of an ascetic life, without any divine assistance. Jain monastics and lay people follow the same fivefold path of nonviolence ( ahinsa , or ahimsa truth satya ); non-stealing ( asteya ); chastity ( brahmacharya ); and non-possession or non-possessiveness ( aparigraha ), but to different degrees. Jain dharma teaches that every living thing is an individual and eternal soul , which is responsible for its own actions. Jains see their faith as teaching the individual to live, think and act in ways that respect and honor the spiritual nature of every living being. Jainism was the first religion to practice ahimsa (non-violence) as a rule of life. The primary figures of Jainism are the 24

Table of Contents Parallel to Buddhism another religion has flourished in India since ancient times. This is the Jaina religion or Jainism. The term Jaina or Jain implies follower of Jina which means 'the victorious one'. Jina is the formal title of the 24 spiritual teachers (Tirthankaras) of the Jaina religion. In this sense the term 'Jina' is similar to the term 'Buddha. Popularly, Mahavira who was the last Jaina Tirthankara is confounded to be the founder of this faith.

Humans who have destroyed their karmas achieve Infinite Knowledge, Infinite Perception, Infinite Power, and Infinite Bliss. They become gods, or Jina, and as such will never suffer rebirth again. There is no Creator God, and Jinas do not manage the universe or humankind, which operates under its own laws (cosmic and karmic). The souls of Jinas retain their individual identities. Twenty-four Jinas are worshipped as inspirational bridges for others to achieve liberation, the latest being the founder of the religion. Any living being may become a God once enlightened. As more people become enlightened, the number of gods becomes innumerable.

    Jainism
General Information Jainism is a religious faith of India that is usually said to have originated with Mahavira, a contemporary of the Buddha (6th century BC). Jains, however, count Mahavira as the last of 24 founders, or Tirthamkaras, the first being Rishabha. In 1990 the number of Jains worldwide was estimated at 3,650,000, almost all of whom live in India. Jainism has been present in India since Mahavira's time without interruption, and its influence has been significant. The major distinction within Jainism is between the Digambara and Svetambara sects, a schism that appears to date from about the 1st century AD. The major difference between them is that whereas the Svetambaras wear white clothes, the Digambaras traditionally go naked. Fundamentally, however, the views of both sects on ethics and philosophy are identical. The most notable feature of Jain ethics is its insistence on noninjury to all forms of life. Jain philosophy finds that every kind of thing has a soul; therefore strict observance of this precept of nonviolence (ahimsa) requires extreme caution in all activity. Jain monks frequently wear cloths over their mouths to avoid unwittingly killing anything by breathing it in, and Jain floors are kept meticulously clean to avert the danger of stepping on a living being. Jains regard the intentional taking of life, or even violent thoughts, however, as much more serious. Jain philosophy posits a gradation of beings, from those with five senses down to those with only one sense.

    Jainism
According to John Hick (1982), the story of religion is one in which the divine gradually has been more and more fully revealed. In his perspective on the history of religion, the early period of religious life was incomplete, with tribal gods and goddesses who were more human projection than divine revelation. For him, that changed when the world religions were born during the axial period and beyond. Karl Jaspers defined the axial period, or axial age, as that time from approximately 800 B.C.E. To 200 B.C.E. When the first world religions were born that stemmed primarily from individual revelatory experiences. This included Confucius in China, the Hebrew prophets, and Gautama the Buddha and Mahavira, the founder of the Jains, in India. That is one perspective on world religious history, and one that tends to favor Semitic monotheism as the "highest" form of religion. However, another perspective is the more pluralist tradition of India which relied on a continuing evolution, rather than revolutionary change. It was change with continuity, as Gurumurthy (1994) put it, with the move "from ritualistic life, to agnostic Buddhism, to the Ahimsa of Mahavira, to the intellect of Sankara, to the devotion of Ramnuja, and finally to the modern movements of social reform" (p. 52). The focus in the following pages is on the Ahimsa of Mahavira, or the development and evolution of Jainism in India.
