Geography of Jamaica
With a population of over 2.7 million people, the island of Jamaica is the third largest in the region, but is the biggest English speaking nation in the Caribbean. The length of the island is one hundred and forty-six miles (146 miles), with a land area of four thousand, two hundred and forty-four square miles (4,244 sq. miles). In this article we review Jamaica geography
The comparison is usually made that it is a little smaller than Connecticut State in the United States; although it is a tiny island it has so much to offer.
Jamaica is positioned approximately 18 degrees north and 77 degrees west of the equator; which is six hundred miles of Miami and ninety miles of Cuba. It is a part of the Greater Antilles and also a member of the Caribbean Common Market (CARICOM). The time zone is five hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (G.M.T).
The island is divided into three counties which are Surrey, Middlesex and Cornwall. The counties are then broken down into fourteen parishes; the capital which is Kingston is the smallest.
Jamaica geographical location is in the tropical climatic belt, as it lies between two important lines of latitude; the tropic of Cancer and Capricorn. The climate is called the tropics and is hot all year round; there is no marked change in the temperature from one season to another. There are other things that influence the climate in Jamaica such as the sea, the relief of the land and the winds.
