Japan relief Topographically, Japan is a rugged land of high mountains and deep valleys, with many small plains. Because of the alternating sequence of mountain and valley, and the rocky soil, only an estimated 11 per cent of Japan is arable land. The Japanese plains lie chiefly along the lower courses of the principal rivers, on plateaux along the lowest slopes of mountain ranges, and on lowlands along the sea coast. The most extensive plains are in Hokkaido: along the Ishikari River in the western part of the island, along the Tokachi River in the south-east, and around the cities of Nemuro and Kushiro on the east-central shore. Honshu has several large plains. The Osaka plain contains the cities of Kōbe, Kyoto, and Osaka; the Kantō plain is the site of Tokyo; and Nagoya is the main city of the plain of Nobi. The Tsukushi plain is the most important level area in Kyushu. Japanese mountain. Encarta

    Japanese Geography
Many people in the world know something about Japan but they don't know where Japan is. The country is east of mainland China across the Japanese Sea. Japan is a relatively small country, approximately 1/48 the size of Russia and 1/25 the size of China in land area. Moreover, Japanese land area is smaller than the state of California in the United States! About 1.27 million Japanese people live in the country where available land is limited. High population densities cause many social problems such as rising land costs and land contamination because of a concentration of people in a small area. Japan is surrounded by the sea and is composed of 4 major islands and many small islands. The 4 major islands are Hokkaiodo, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Japan stretches from northeast to southwest, and the length is approximately 3500 km (2173.91 miles). One of major islands, Hokkaido, is at about the same longitude with Minnesota. The island of Kyushu is about the same longitude as northern Florida or the state of Georgia. According to experts, about 60% of the Japanese landscape is steep mountainous regions covered with forest. Approximately 70% of the total Japanese population is concentrated in the plains and basins, an area comprising just 24% of the habitable land. Volcanic activity in Sakura Island Japan is located in an area where 4 tectonic plates are connected to each other. The land sits on two plates, the north American plate and the Eurasian plate. The boundary between the two plates is in the middle of Honshu Island. This is one of the reasons why Japan experiences so many earthquakes. Also, there are many volcanos throughout the country. Those volcanos are still active and some of them frequently erupt .

    Agriculture
Most of Japanese land are hilly districts and mountanious regions because the gracier did not cover Japan. Therefore, people had to cooperate for growing and harvesting rice becasue of the land feature. About 60 % of Japanese country is still mountanious region and is covered by forest. Each region has a special product based on the climate, the soil type, and the features of the land. There are stock farms, crop farms, tea farms, flower farms, and etc... Many festivals in Japan are usually related to agriculture. However, there are also some problems. About 60 % of Japanese land is mountanious region and covered by forest. So people must make good use of available lands. This is one of reason why there are many terraced fields. Those fields are sometimes for crops and fruits. For example, a hillside is used for planting mandarin orange trees. There are also other hillside crops. If you see the hill from a distance place, the hill looks as if it has patches. The patches of color of the hillside are dark green, dark brown, light green, and white. Why is there a white color patch? Because a greenhouse is sometimes on the hillside. Each prefecture usually has special products including food, art work, and drink. Those things attract people to visit other regions. Therefore, people tend to get those products when they travel around. However, it does not mean that people cannot get those products in their regions because of a high distribution system. Vegetable and seafood that are in season are shipped to stores. A price of food in season usually becomes less expencsive because of a high amount of harvest. For example, apples are sold in a store throughout the year, but the harvest time of apples is in winter. So the price of an apple is cheaper in winter. Moreover, the price is dependant on where the apple is cultivated and what kind of apple it is.

    Japan Environment - current issues
Japan Geography Environment - current issues: air pollution from power plant emissions results in acid rain; acidification of lakes and reservoirs degrading water quality and threatening aquatic life; Japan is one of the largest consumers of fish and tropical timber, contributing to the depletion of these resources in Asia and elsewhere Definition: This entry lists the most pressing and important environmental problems. The following terms and abbreviations are used throughout the entry:
Acidification - the lowering of soil and water pH due to acid precipitation and deposition usually through precipitation; this process disrupts ecosystem nutrient flows and may kill freshwater fish and plants dependent on more neutral or alkaline conditions (see acid rain).
Acid rain - characterized as containing harmful levels of sulfur dioxide or nitrogen oxide; acid rain is damaging and potentially deadly to the earth's fragile ecosystems; acidity is measured using the pH scale where 7 is neutral, values greater than 7 are considered alkaline, and values below 5.6 are considered acid precipitation; note - a pH of 2.4 (the acidity of vinegar) has been measured in rainfall in New England.
Aerosol - a collection of airborne particles dispersed in a gas, smoke, or fog.
