JAPAN HISTORY
While geography is not destiny, the fact that Japan is located on islands on the outermost edge of Asia has had a profound influence on Japan's history. Just close enough to mainstream Asia, yet far enough to keep itself separate, much of Japanese history has been the alternation of periods of closure and openness. Until recently, Japan has been able to turn on or off its connection to the rest of the world, internalizing foreign cultural influences in fits and starts. It is comparable with the relationship between Britain and the rest of Europe, but with a much wider channel.
Shinto is the older animist religion of traditional Japan. At just over twelve hundred years in Japan, Buddhism is the more recent imported faith. These two religions have intertwined and influenced each other and Japanese culture. You can continue to find them side by side in cities, towns, and peoples lives.
The capital of the country has moved over the centuries from Nara to Kyoto and now Tokyo. Likewise, Japan has seen a range of political structures from periods of divinely endowed Imperial rule, feudal warring clans, the shogunate as military police state, a restored Imperial house, a one party democracy, and the current unsettled state of political affairs. One constant is the Imperial family, the oldest continuous royal family in the world.

    Japan History
Japan is best known as the country of islands. Japan’s history dates back to 13,000 BC. Early settlers of Japan were fishermen and hunters-gatherers.
    Different phases of Japan History
The period of 13,000 BC to 300 BC is known as Jomon Period, named after the pottery of this time. The word Jomon means “cord pattern”. The people used to craft patterns of cord on their pottery. 300 BC – 300 AD – Known as Yayoi Period, again named after the pottery of that era. During this period agriculture was introduced in Japan, with rice becoming the main crop. With the introduction of agriculture the country began to unite under the powerful landowners and social classes began to evolve. Iron was introduced by Korea to Japan during this period. Japan was ruled by a queen named Himiko (or Pimiko) at that time. In 400 AD the country was combined and Yamato, Japan became the capitol of the country. The period (300 AD to 538 AD) was commonly known as Kofun period, named after the tombs known as Kofuns. These tombs were built for the rulers of the country. Japan history passed through different phases in different periods. Buddhism came to Japan in 538 AD or 552 AD. Prince Shotoku promoted this religion and was the one who wrote the constitution of Seventeen Articles, giving details of political and moral principals. During the Yamato period Chinese scripture was also introduced. New tax systems and reforms were brought in Japan in 645 AD based on the Chinese model, this era is most commonly known as the era of the Fujiwara clan. The Fujiwara clan existed until the 11th century, the rise of the warriors (Samurais). The events that followed brought devastating changes between the years 710 AD – 784 AD (the Nara Period) when the city of Nara was made the capitol of the country. The capitol was shifted to Nagaoka and finally Heian which remained the capital of Japan for over 1,000 years.

Like showers of gold dust on the marsh,
    Or an inverted sky,
    The buttercups are dancing now
    Where silver brooks run by.
    Bright, bright,
    As fallen flakes of light,
    They nod
    In time to every breeze
    That chases shadows swiftly lost
    Amid those grassy seas.
See, what a golden frenzy flies
    Through the light-hearted flowers!
    In mimic fear they flutter now;
    Each fairy blossom cowers.
    Then up, then up,
    Each shakes its yellow cup
    And nods
In careless grace once more -
A very flood of sunshine seems
    Across the marsh to pour.

The history of Japan, especially the history poses the problem that the Japanese historical research as out of respect for the ancestors at a later date as was begun in the western hemisphere.
The settlement of the Japanese islands was estimated already in the Paleolithic 100000-30000 BC) instead. The settlement was initially likely to prove a land bridge between Siberia and the present-day Hokkaido. A second wave of immigration was possibly via a land bridge that existed between the Japanese islands and the Korean mainland. Finally it is assumed by a third immigration by sea from Southeast Asia.
Reliable conclusions on the origin of the Japanese are currently not given.
In principle, one can say that Japanese history is marked by an interplay of external influences and complete isolation. On one side was due to the current situation and policy-induced closure of the country a unique internal development. On the other hand, Japan was subject to strong influences from the outside through the rich culture of China and later by Western powers.
With the Chinese influence on Japanese culture writing, language and social ethics, with effect to the present have been influenced decisively. By the active influence of Western powers in Southeast Asia, Japan was forced to open up and participate in the modernization taking place. In a short time, Japan was then a modernized nation, with the contemporary desire to expand its sphere of influence. This effort ended with the defeat in World War II and the six years during occupation by the United States. Meanwhile, Japan is a modern state, which maintains its traditional history.
