Traditional Japanese legend maintains that Japan was founded in 600 BC by the Emperor Jimmu, a direct descendant of the sun goddess and ancestor of the present ruling imperial family. About AD 405, the Japanese court officially adopted the Chinese writing system. Together with the introduction of Buddhism in the sixth century, these two events revolutionized Japanese culture and marked the beginning of a long period of Chinese cultural influence. From the establishment of the first fixed capital at Nara in 710 until 1867, the emperors of the Yamato dynasty were the nominal rulers, but actual power was usually held by powerful court nobles, regents, or "shoguns" (military governors). Contact With the West
The first recorded contact with the West occurred about 1542, when a Portuguese ship, blown off its course to China, landed in Japan. During the next century, traders from Portugal, the Netherlands, England, and Spain arrived, as did Jesuit, Dominican, and Franciscan missionaries. During the early part of the 17th century, Japan's shogunate suspected that the traders and missionaries were actually forerunners of a military conquest by European powers. This caused the shogunate to place foreigners under progressively tighter restrictions. Ultimately, Japan forced all foreigners to leave and barred all relations with the outside world except for severely restricted commercial contacts with Dutch and Chinese merchants at Nagasaki. This isolation lasted for 200 years, until Commodore Matthew Perry of the U.S. Navy forced the opening of Japan to the West with the Convention of Kanagawa in 1854.

While the written Japan history stretches back to the first century AD, all the archaeological evidence shows that people have lived on the island for well over 10,000 years. After the last ice age ended, the islands of Japan developed a very diverse ecosystem, and this led to the natural development of humans. A great deal of pottery has been found which dates back to the Jomon period. It should also be noted that some parts of Japan's history are closely connected with the history of China. Japan is known for the great deal of isolation that it maintained throughout its long history, and due to this isolation, it developed a culture that was quite distinct, despite the fact that it was influenced by China to some degree.
In total, Japan history stretches back nearly 100,000 years. From about 100,000 to 30,000 years ago, the first stone tools where developed. After the last Ice Age, the Jomon period began. The Jomon period of the Japan stretched from about 14,000 BC to about 300 BC. During this time, like much of the outside world, the people who lived in Japan where hunters and gatherers. They lived in wood houses and only had the most basic forms of agriculture. During this time, weaving had not been discovered yet and the people used bark to dress themselves. During this time, many of the Jomon natives worshipped the Bear, and even today, the bear is considered to have a special importance in the region.

    Japan History
The history of Japan probably started around 100,000 BC, when the earliest stone tool implements were found. According to the ancient Japan history following the last ice age, the rich ecosystem of the archipelago apparently fostered human development rather earlier than in other geographical areas, yielding the earliest polished stone tools, and to this date, the earliest known pottery in the world. The history of Japan is then featured by a passage of long periods of isolation and periods of radical, often revolutionary, influences from the rest of the world. The first era name in the history of Tokyo Japan was Taika, celebrating the revolutionary political changes following the great Taika reform. Although the practice of nengo was once interrupted in the latter half of the seventh century, it was re-adopted in 701 and has been used continuously ever since. Japan Hiroshima history also incorporates the ever long lasting effects of the Hiroshima bombing, which devastated the city, amounting the victims o millions. The history of Japan also underwent many periods like Jomon, Yayoi, Yamato, Nara, Heian, Kamakura, Kemmu restoration, Muromachi, Azuchi-Momoyama, Edo, Meiji, and Taisho.

The history of Japan , the large island nation off the coast of China and Korea , is comprised of mainly three stages: the periods of interaction with China and East Asia , isolation, and opening to the world.
    Early Japan
Japan was inhabited since more than 30,000 years ago, when land bridges connected Japan to Korea and China to the south and Siberia to the north. With rise in sea level, the 4 major islands took form around 20,000 years ago, and the lands connecting today's Japan to the continental Asia completely disappeared 15,000 ~ 10,000 years ago. Thereafter, some migrations continued by way of the Korean peninsula, which would serve as Japan's main avenue for cultural exchange with the continental Asia until the medieval period.

    Japan History
Amazon.com Widgets Japan has a great history that can be traced all the way back to the Paleolithic times. There are so many different events and cultural occurrences that have truly led Japan to be the great country it is today. Japan history is a long and great one.
The Paleolithic time period occurred around 100,000-30,000 BC. This ends at the end of the last ice age and was time of stone tools and primitive living. The documents of Japan history during this time are spotty at best. The closer you get to the current time period the more that is known.
The next is the J mon period that lasted until 300 BC. There were actual civilization patterns that historians have been able to uncover. This was certainly a hunter-gatherer time of Japan history.
Next is the Yayoi period. Culture started to get a bit more advanced at this stage with things like rice farming and bronze work. There were even different alliances and sub-cultures that started to form in this early version of Japan.
Of course, the first written documentation of this great country did not even come about until 57 AD. These written documents described rule by a queen names Himiko and the many different tribes.

Symbols like Love, Passion, Strength and others. You can find a more thorough list on our site. We offer professional English Language translations of Japanese Kanji for art, tattoo designs or just to have a name translated into this beautiful style. Japanese Symbols, otherwise known as Kanji symbols or characters, originated in China thousands of years ago. Although the Japanese language has fewer sounds than most other languages, it does have an extremely complex system of writing. Lacking their own script, the Japanese took over the ideograms, or kanji (Japanese Symbols), as a response to the Korean and Chinese monks carrying Buddhism to Japan between the fourth to the seventh centuries. At first used strictly in classical Chinese texts, the kanji were later adapted to Japanese as well. After the second world war, Japan's postwar Ministry of Education chose 1,850 kanji from the more than 50,000 available, for general use. This list has been revised several times since, and has hardly had the effect of promoting the elimination of kanji altogether. The average college graduate still needs over 3,000 characters just to read the newspaper! Find free Kanji samples, character meanings, maps and training in Japanese Language and Culture.
