Japan Hiroshima history saw one of its most disastrous days on the 6th of August, 1945. It was on this day that history saw one of its blackest days when the city became the target of the first atomic bomb used against civil population. Japan History
Japanese historical periods gained their name chiefly from the pottery of the age, although the Japanese were predominantly a fishing class since ancient times. The Jomon period and Yayoi period all derived their names from the pottery of the age. Each period is marked however with its unique distinctiveness which sets it apart from other periods besides making important contribution to Japanese history.
  • The Jomon period which lasted from 13000 to 300 BC is today remembered for its Jamon pottery but the following period is much more significant.
  • The Yayoi period (300 BC to 300 AD) is notable for two landmark contributions to Japanese civilization. One was the import of iron and other modern ideas into Japan from Korea and the other, the rise of social classes.
  • The Kofun period followed the Yayoi period and lasted until 538 AD. The period owes its name to large structures called kofun, erected during the period, and dedicated to political leaders of the age. The period first witnessed a unified Japan under the name of Yamato Japan which was based in Yamato (in modern-day Nara prefecture). The period was also witness to the import of Buddhism from Korea around 538 or 552 AD and Chinese Confucianism and Taoism also gained influence around 645 AD. The Emperor was head of state for the first time in Japan .

Last updated : Nov 2009 Japan History The earliest recorded history of Japan dates to the reign of the emperor Jimmu in the sixth century BC . Japan was under strong Chinese and Korean influence thereafter, but was not able to create a strong centralised State based on the Chinese model. Economic and political power was held by a group of noble dynasties which operated on a mainly feudal basis. The 12th century AD experienced the emergence of the shogun , a military governor from one of the great families, who lead with the consent of the others, however most of their energies were dedicated to internecine warfare. Only an external threat, such as the attempted Mongol invasions during the late 13th century, brought together the various families against the common enemy. This helped build a latent national consciousness which gradually developed over the next 300 years.

Japan History
Japan History Katsu Kaishu ‹consummate samurai, streetwise denizen of Downtown Edo, founder of the Japanese navy, statesman par excellence and always the outsider, historian and prolific writer, faithful retainer of the Tokugawa Shogun and mentor of men who would overthrow him was among the most remarkable of the numerous heroes of the Meiji Restoration.
Sakamoto Ryoma was one of the relatively unsung heroes of Japan. Romulus Hillsborough examines the life and times or Ryoma and his contributions to Japan.
World War 2
The Japanese called this the Pacific War and indeed it was a war of this great big ocean. It pitted two of the greatest navies the world had yet known in mortal battle across this immense expanse of ocean. America amongst other nations was not pleased about Japan`s invasion of China which started in 1931. By 1941 America had employed sanctions on Japan which were designed to cripple Japan`s economy. Some of the Japanese leaders proposed to make America pay for this transgression, with what was hoped would be a quick war, that would have America without a navy in the Pacific and at her knees suing for peace
