Second generation chinese v second generation japanese
Second Generation Chinese vs. Second Generation Japanese
The term “Oriental” seemed to be a very common word among those who disliked Asians during the immigration period. This word, found insulting by the Asian, refers to goods from Asia and not just the race itself. But some of this discrimination changed when historian, Yuji Ichioka, used a new term to associate with Asians, the word Asian Americans . Two Asian groups that seem to have experienced much of this discrimination are the Chinese and Japanese; mainly the second generation.
The second generation Chinese and Japanese have many things in common as to how they were raised and their experiences as children. Both were told as children that education was a key point of life. That was the way to climb up the ladder and reach the top. But it wasn’t easy. As Asian Americans , they were outcasts in their American schools. A place where they wanted to belong, but were rejected. Both Chinese and Japanese were made fun of at school. Being called “Japs” or “Chinks” were one of the many discriminatory hardships they faced everyday. They were segregated wherever they went. The movie theatre, barber shops, restaurants, and many other public places refused them service or s
Both the Chinese and Japanese second generations faced similar obstacles in life. From being discriminated by a society where they yearned so much to fit in, and being looked down upon by those who loved and accepted them, they made a name for themselves. Through their trials and tribulations they still found their way up to the top through the mountain of discrimination. The second generation Chinese and Japanese can truly say that they succeeded in their efforts to be successful and fit in. They paved the path for those after them and made America the diverse country that it is today. They opened America’s eyes to the diverse culture that lay within the immigrants that came looking for a better life. They made a name for themselves as

Transforming Ministry and Leadership in our Community
July 1999, Number 99-1
By fixing our eyes on Jesus and understanding how He relates to people who have cultural characteristics familiar to those of us who are Japanese- and Asian Americans, we can be transformed and renewed by Him in very profound and meaningful ways. The Shikataganai Guy is one of those people who can help us see ourselves more clearly.
Shikataganai , literally reflects a whole philosophy that has enabled Japanese Americans to not only survive but thrive as an ethnic and racial minority here in the United States. Shikataganai is but the tip of a huge philosophical iceburg that is in direct contrast to the philosophical orientation of those of Western cultures, and is both an asset as well as a liability for those of us who live lives consistent with it.
As a result of this philosophical difference, those of Western culture tend to be aggressive, outspoken, confrontational and individualistic. Those of Japanese culture, on the other hand, tend to be responsive, soft-spoken, non-confrontational, and group-oriented.

Americans Less Happy with Positive Events than Asians
October 1, 2007 [Photo by WadeB A new study finds that when positive events happen to European Americans, they do not increase happiness as much as for Japanese, Asian Americans and Koreans. The Washington Post reports that on average, for each single negative event a European American experiences, they need 1.91 positive events to bring them back to the same level of happiness. For Koreans it is 1.32, for Asian Americans it is 1.31 and for Japanese it is 1:1. How can this be explained? One possibility is that European Americans have a more comfortable lifestyle. As a result they are less able to cope with negative events since they are less accustomed to them. Alternatively, or in addition, there may be cultural differences at work here. European Americans may be expecting higher levels of positive events - they feel entitled - compared to the other groups. It's easy to dismiss the idea that as we become accustomed to a good lifestyle, we are less appreciative of positive events and come to routinely expect them. But the cultural slant provides an intriguing alternative perspective. What if European American cultures encourage being dismissive of small (read cheap) pleasures in favour of more grandiose (read expensive) pleasures? And at the same time, Asian cultures encourage the enjoyment of small pleasures? Either way expectations about positive events are probably a powerful force here, whether they are culturally or economically mediated. Happiness is also probably subject to the law of diminishing returns, here described by Thomas Bradury from UCLA's marriage lab in terms of kissing:

Being Japanese American
By Miyabe Ota
For me, World War II is about sirens, dark cities and bomb shelters; little children being sent to the countryside for safety or **sokai**; the atomic bomb or **Pika**; sad news of Japan surrendering; Emperor Hirohito on the radio; disintegration of Imperial Japan; youth lost to the **Kamikaze Tokkoutai; "comfort women" of Korea and the Philippines; post-war hope in the voice of Misora Hibari; the baby boom era when my parents were born. These are the most relevant events during the war to me as a Japanese American.
Manzanar is a foreign story in another world belonging to an American named Wakatsukisomething I read about in junior high. It was just as new and foreign to me as other events in American history such as genocide, slavery or refugees.
I am Japanese American and everyone in my lineage was on the other side of the big blue Pacific during the depression, World War II and the Asian American Movement. Yes, my family's "World War II history" remains in Japan because that is where they experienced it.
I was born in the U.S. and am of Japanese descent. That should be all the explanation I need in order to say I am a Japanese American. According to some sociologist who bought into the American obsession with categorization, I am not "Nisei." I am "Shin Nisei." Who is he to argue what these Japanese words mean when he can hardly think in Japanese? Japanese people in Japan certainly do not see any definition of age and generation in those words.

Home About Us Contact Us ... History AAA Guide Asian American Socioeconomic Statistics and Demographics Demographics are a great way to understand how many are in the Asian American population in the US. A lot of talk is spent on Hispanics and African Americans, but the truth is the largest growing population currently in the US is that of the Asian American. The demographics state that there are about 5 percent of the populations that are Asian American at the moment. However, since they are one of the fastest growing populations this number may increase a great deal in the future. To help understand the Asian American socioeconomic statistics and demographics further explanation is needed. To better understand the demographics we are going to take a look at some of the larger cities around the US. As you might already know the Asian American tends to have pockets in the US where they have a large number of their population. Many families seem to group together in an attempt to have the community they may have left behind a few years to decades ago. This is why there are many Chinatown areas in larger cities where many of the Asian population reside. As of 2000 11.9 million people reported themselves as Asian American. According to demographics this means about 4.2 percent of the US population considers themselves to be Chinese. There are of course more subgroups such as Filipinos counting themselves as 2.4 million in the population with about 1.9 million Asian Indians in the mix.

No part of the contents of this site may be reproduced without prior written permission. WHAT YOU SAY [This page is closed to new input. Ed.] This is the truth about top business schools from a second-year student at a Top-5 US business school.
Be skeptical when you read the career placement statistics reported by the schools. The median salaries tend to be high because most of the companies recruiting on campus are consulting fims and investment banks that pay the highest starting salaries. To get their money worth, these firms work their associates over eighty hours per week. If you calculate the hourly rate, it often comes out to be no higher than that of an average corporate job. Very few associates can survive the grueling hours, and the turnover rates are extremely high. This is why these firms are the biggest recruiters on campus every year.
In summary, business schools act in their own interest often at the expense of the students who pay exorbitant tuition to keep the professors employed. Many of my classmates believe business schools are some of the biggest scams in business. For those considering going to business school, let the buyer beware.

As much as you think you identify with japanese/asian americans, you really have no clue. my halfie friends shun their white side. Usually because white people are prone to divorce. Racism comes out on their white side against their asian side. They grow up with racism against their asian side in their social life. So they identify with their asian side. Hanging around asians gives them a feeling of empowerment. When they hear racial slurs against asians they strike back with their kind, only to look back to see asians 100% behind them.
