    Japanese Culture
Japan, the land of the Samurais, Ikebana, Sushi and Kimono! A land that has proved resilience in the face of a long feudal period and two World Wars. The rapid social change and reflections of the attitudes and concerns of the present, cementing a link with the past, makes Japan truly unique. The orient has been long associated with riches and a diverse culture. Whether it is the Sub-Continent or other components of this vast treasury of tradition-based communities, the East is truly where the Sun rises, illusion or not. The intriguing Japanese culture has stood the test of the pre-historic, recorded and medival times and the Rennaisance and has evolved into a great storehouse of ethics and practice. The journey from the original Jomon culture to the modern hybrid version, the Japanese culture offers splashes of color and variety from Asia, North America and Europe. This combined influence springs from the immigration to and from the continent over time.
The contemporary culture is an importation from China, the original inhabitants of Japan and the relative phases of isolation from and exposure to the outside world. The distinctively different culture has developed and thrived recognizing the Japanese as resilient and persistant. The Japanese language is agglutinative, with a relatively insignificant sound-inventory. It is spoken with a lexical, pitch based accent. The earliest available record of the Japanese language is actually within a Chinese document dating abck as far as 252 A.D! The Japanese script is a combination of Chinese characters, and two syllabic scripts, namely Hiragana and Katagana. The numerals comprise Hindu-Arabic forms and Sino-Japanese numerals.

    JAPANESE CULTURE
Beliefs and Practices During Pregnancy, Birth, and Postpregnancy
T he following information has been obtained from several interviews of Japanese women residing on the Island of Hawaii. Not all the beliefs and practices listed were consistent with all the women interviewed. Moreover, many Japanese women of the younger generations were observing less of the traditional beliefs that their mothers' practiced. There is a trend within the younger generation moving toward more contemporary practices. This website does not recommend implementation of any of the beliefs and practices listed below, but rather has been presented for enhancing cultural knowledge of its viewers.
    GENERAL INFORMATION
    • Traditionally, it was dishonorable and shameful to become pregnant before marriage. Some members of the present generations are now occassionally having children out of wedlock, but are often still subjected to shame by their families and/or Japanese community. Its biggest clientele = Kitty fans from other parts of Asia, who are flocking the joint to get a glimpse of the one and only Venus Hello Kitty.
