Japanese "Nihon-go" or "Nippon-go" in Japanese) is the language spoken on the island nation of Japan , in East Asia . A theory about its origin is that Japanese, Mongolian , and Turkish come from the same family of Altaic languages In English, the order of the words is very important. For example, the sentences "Is it?" and "It is." mean different things. In Japanese a lot of these differences are made by adding or changing the endings of words. So a Japanese word has a stem called a "body", and additional parts (called "suffixes"). By changing the suffix you can change the meaning of the word. Japanese has five vowel sounds that can have two different lengths. They are ah, ee, oo, eh , and o . Lengthening a vowel changes the meaning of the word: ojisan (おじさん, uncle) and ojiisan (おじいさん, grandfather). Japanese has a sound which is like the English "L" sound, but it is also like the English "R" sound. (That is why it can be difficult for many Japanese to learn to make both "L" and "R" sounds when they speak English.) Japanese has a sound which is not common in English which is usually written Tsu (つ). This sound appears in "

The sound inventory of Japanese is relatively small, and it has a lexically-distinctive pitch accent system. Its recorded history goes back to the 8th century , when the three major works of Old Japanese were compiled. Japanese is written primarily in Chinese characters (called kanji ) and hiragana , supplimented by katakana for certain uses. Hiragana and katakana are a pair of syllabaries originally derived from Chinese characters. The Latin alphabet (called rōmaji ) is also often used in modern Japanese, especially for things such as company names, advertising, and when inputting Japanese into a computer. Western style

History and classification
Historical linguists agree that Japanese is a Japonic language , but do not agree further about the origin of the Japanese language; there are several competing theories (presented roughly in descending order of likelihood):
  • Japanese is a relative of extinct languages spoken by historic cultures in what are now the Korean peninsula and Manchuria . The best attested of these is the language of Goguryeo (a.k.a. Koguryo), with the less-attested languages of Baekje (a.k.a. Paekche) and Buyeo (a.k.a Puyo) hypothesized to also be related, because of all these cultures' historic ties.

Grammar
Japanese generally employs a subject-object-verb order, using particles to mark the grammatical functions of the words: 私がハンバーガーを食べる watashi-ga hamburger-o taberu, "I-subject hamburger-object eat". It is common to omit subjects and even objects if these are clear from previous context.
Verbs and adjectives conjugate by tense and politeness level, but not by person or number. There is no verb "to be" as such, but the polite copula desu can be used in most cases: John desu ("I am John"), Ringo desu ("This is an apple"), Akai desu ("It is red"), etc. Note that the exact meaning will depend on the implied subject!
The good news is that Japanese has none of the following: gender, declensions or plurals. Nouns never conjugate and almost all verbs are regular.

Interesting facts about the Japanese Language
I've lived in Japan about half my life or about 28 years at the time of this post. I have been called a good speaker of what is considered one of the most difficult languages in the world. Is there anything easy about Japanese?
  • No verb conjugation! No gender of nouns! No articles (a, the) Number (singular and plural) not important and barely exists! Not hard to learn to pronounce as there are only 48 sounds consisting of 5 vowels and 11 consonants! Syntax or the word order of a sentence, excepting the final verb, is totally free!
Why then is Japanese considered difficult to learn?
  • The written language has 3 methods of writing: Thousands of Chinese characters called Kanji and 2 Japanese syllabaries of 48 characters each called Hiragana and Katakana . Japanese is therefore considered the most complex written language in the world. In order to get barely by, you need to learn all of the Hiragana and Katakana and at least a few hundred Kanji. Most words have two roots of pronunciation, a Chinese root and a Japanese root. They are totally different sounds. So learning Japanese is almost like learning the vocabulary of 2 languages at once!
All of the 8 Kanji characters above are pronounced " shin " and all 8 of them are totally unrelated to each other in meaning! They are from left to right: God, advance, believe, new, true, stretch, heart, and parent. There are no tones in Japanese as there are in Chinese, and so the pronounciation of shin is exactly the same for all the above. Besides these, there are

The only other language of the Japanese archipelago is Ainu ( see Ainu ), now spoken by only a handful of people on Hokkaido, though once much more widespread. Japanese is not closely related to any other language, though a distant genetic kinship to Korean is now thought probable by some scholars, and an even more remote relationship to the Altaic languages is possible. Japanese is first attested in the 8th century AD , when Middle Chinese characters were utilized solely for their phonetic value to write native Japanese words. Japanese retains a huge stock of loanwords from Middle Chinese, long adapted to native phonetics. For more information on Japanese language , visit Britannica.com
