In many cases, he or she studies Japanese and other related subjects at the language institution for between one and two years and then takes the entrance examination for a university, etc. For this reason, the choice of the Japanese language institution is very important for the prospective student. There are two types of Japanese language institutions for foreign students who wish to go on to a Japanese university for either undergraduate or postgraduate studies. 1. List of non-Japanese-language curriculum schools in Japan.

International Schools In Japan
Compiled and maintained by Cornelia [begun 21 February 2000, last updated 1 September 2009] This listing is of all the schools in Japan with curriculums in English that I have thus far found. The body of international schools is continuously in flux. Some schools have closed and more are starting up every year. Thus this list may not be complete. Some of these schools do not fit everyone's definition of an "international school", but I will leave that sort of judgement up to you. Placement in this list does not mean endorsement of the school. I highly recommend that in a search for a school suitable for an individual child, the family search out other parents for references and general networking.
Our heartfelt thanks goes to those schools which have donated something to support this website. Contributors and financial sponsors are thanked on our sponsors page.
A note to those researching from outside Japan: The country code when dialing Japan is 81. Then drop the zero at the start of the area code. For example, a number listed as 03-1234-5678 would be dialed as 81-3-1234-5678 from abroad. We have also included those schools that we found teaching in German, French, Chinese, Korean and other languages, since many of our readers are made up of multi-cultural couples that may wish their children schooled in a language other than English or Japanese for whatever reasons.

Win/MS-DOS Japanese Language teaching software for beginners.

Kana Sensei
This is Shareware I originally created in 1991 for helping me with learning Japanese. It is MS-DOS software but, amazingly, it still works on Microsoft Windows (all versions as of 2001). Some people may still find it useful. It is basically a flash-card type program in which you can learn hiragana, katakana, a few basic kanji and some vocabulary. If you try it out, please drop me a line just to say hi. By the way, ignore the address in the documentation as it is no longer valid. However, if you really want to send me money, let me know and something can be arranged. :-) Download via HTML ksensei1.zip Kana Sensei Program ks_ou.zip Additional quizzes originally sent only to registered users Download via FTP ksensei1.zip Kana Sensei Program ks_ou.zip Additional quizzes originally sent only to registered users Directions for installation:

Japanese Language Program in Tokyo, Japan
The Hiroo Japanese Center, accredited by the Japanese government and the best language school in Japan for students with no background in Chinese characters(Kanji), is accepting new students for 2010/2011 year program.
The Hiroo Japanese Center was founded in 1984, and since then its school has been admitting only students from U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Canada and European countries. The reasons why the school has never admitted Chinese and other Asian students are stated as follows. Firstly Chinese and Korean people are familiar with Chinese characters, therefore students from other countries are handicapped if they study with Chinese and Korean people. Secondly the grammar of the Korean and some other Asian languages are quite similar to Japanese. Therefore those people can easily and quickly master Japanese, on the other hand the western people are required to spend much more time for the Japanese language.
A Unique Approach to Japanese Language Education
Students who can speak English are especially suited for language classes at Hiroo Japanese Center. Our goal is to assist students with no background in Kanji in obtaining a logical, systematic and effective understanding of the Japanese language by the following method:

A little background about the language. Japanese is spoken by an estimated 130 million people worldwide and is the primary language spoken in Japan. In fact, Japan is the only country where Japanese is the primary language.
Learning to speak Japanese is much easier than what you’ve probably been led to believe. The writing system, well that’s another story.
The Japanese language can be written using any of four different scripts.
  • Romaji - This script uses English letters to represent Japanese sounds and words and is a substitute script used until hiragana, katakana, and kanji are learned. It was devised as a way to communicate in spoken and written Japanese quickly without needing to learn the thousands of combined characters in the other scripts. Romaji is used in Japanese, especially for company names and logos, advertising, and when inputting Japanese into a computer. Romaji is used anywhere in Japan where there are many foreigners, such as big cities, train stations, and hotels. Romaji is the first script you should learn. Hiragana - This is a Japanese script used for already established words in the language such as sun, moon, house, mountain, people, etc. This script, along with kanji, make up about 98% of the language. This is the second script you should learn.
