The Origins Of Jazz Music
The essence of the sound of Jazz music is so versatile due to the origins from which it first began. In fact, New Orleans, Louisiana is the place where Jazz first began between 1850 and 1900 by African slaves as well as the freed people of color. The first style of Jazz music was known as Dixieland.
In Africa from the Middle to Central to the West, one can hear the intricate rhythmic improvisation of the percussive instruments that is often heard with Jazz Music. These rhythms combined with the American Spirituals, Hymns, Blues, and the blue grass hillbilly musical sounds created a type of sound the originated in Jazz music. However, the music was just a peculiar sound without a particular title to call it fifteen years later in 1915. The great pianist Earl Hines born in 1903 played this type of music before the title Jazz became an official style of music. The word "Jazz" which was formerly spelled as "Jass" has it's origins as a type of American slang used to describe the sound of Jazz music.
It is the sound of Jazz music that began as an offspring from the origins that created this music. In the beginning of the century the instruments used in Jazz music were European percussion, brass and woodwind instruments primarily for the military marching or dance bands.

Easier - Jazz is a type of lively music with strong, complex rhythms. It was first played at the beginning of the 20th century by black musicians in New Orleans, Louisiana. Jazz musicians often accent or add notes or beats in unusual or unexpected places. They make up tunes as they play. Jazz music has changed, and today there are many different forms of Jazz. Harder - Shortly after the turn of the 20th century, the earliest documented jazz music style emerged in New Orleans. Jazz began with a basic trio of musicians: a cornet, trumpet, or violin to carry the melody while a clarinet played ornate countermelodies, and the trombone provided rhythmic slides and the root notes of chords or simple harmonies. Below this group, there was a guitar or banjo sounding out the chords, sometimes a piano and/or a string bass, and drums supplying a rhythmic accompaniment.

"A Road Less Traveled" - CD
This CD was composed and recorded in February of 1998. It is an album of piano and chamber music somewhat similar to the music of Debussey and Satie. The first song written for this album, "Inside the Moment", was inspired by the Gold Medal performance of skater Tara Lipinski in the 1998 Winter Olympics. All of the other pieces were composed within the following six weeks. Below you will find recordings of this entire album. All pieces were written, arranged, performed and recorded in my private studio.

Jazz.com Blog Highlights
Below are links to some of the highlights from the jazz.com blog. Life on the Road: The Journal of a Traveling Jazz Musician: Fr¸y Aagre’s three-part article may be the most insightful account you will ever read about the realities of road life for most jazz musicians. It is not a pretty picture, but it was a story that very much needed to be told. Jazz and Hip-Hop: Can They Really Mix? Jared Pauley presented a smart mini-history of the courtship between jazz and hip-hop in this two-part article. And he also stirred up a mini-war on our blog pages. Alan Kurtz stepped in to annul this unholy union, responding with his typical rebarbative repartee in a memorable piece entitled Hip-Hop is to Jazz as Termitz R2 Wud . Both articles are well worth reading. Life at Gypsy Jazz Camp: One of the most interesting developments in the jazz world is the great resurgence of interest in Django Reinhardt and Gypsy jazz. Bill Barnes took us into the heart of this subculture in his three-part article on his experiences at a jazz camp devoted to jazz Manouche. A Jazz Success Story in Vermont: In a series of articles for jazz.com, Willard Jenkins presented case studies on the people and organizations that are keeping the music alive in various communities around the United States. In this installment, Jenkins explored a jazz success story in Burlington Vermont , and talked with Arnie Malina, the man behind it.
