95% of Jordan's population (before the Iraq war) were either from Palestinian origins, or of the Bedouin population from the Hejaz. The remaining 5% come from different ethnic minorities such as Circassians, Chechens, Armenians and Kurds. Islam is the major religion practiced in the country, whereas Christians form approximately 15% of the population. The culture of Jordan follows Arab traditions as the Kingdom is in the heart of the Middle East. The official language is Arabic, although English is used widely in commerce, government, and is taught at most public and private schools.

    The Culture of Jordan
Jordan Cultural Overview The culture of Jordan is the product of the fusion of Arabic and Islamic elements. Islam is the state religion of Jordan. The majority of Jordan population belongs to the Sunni sect with a small minority of people belonging to the Shi’a sect. Jordan offers a great degree of protection to other religions too. Since 1980s, the government is popularizing a moderate form of Islam, denouncing religious fanaticism. Arabic Language Arabic is the official language of Jordan and is spoken by all Jordanians. English is widely used in government and business circles. Arabic and English are compulsorily taught in schools. The other languages found in the land are French, German, Italian, Spanish, Tagalog and Sinhala. The Circassian community has retained Circassian language to this day apart from speaking Arabic. Islamic Clothing of Jordan The popular male costume consists of tunic, pants and an elaborate over garment with a belt or waist sash. Normally, the head is covered either by a scarf, turban or tarbush. The female costume allows for greater variety in decoration through embroidery with variety of colors and patchworks with great many regional styles. A long rectangular slit or decorative panel seen in the front is typical to Jordanian costumes. Shirsh is the prominent traditional costume in the north of Jordan. This lengthy attire comes with long, tight sleeves and a decorated neckline and embroidered sides. Often, the dresses of central and southern Jordanians are of double length with long pointed sleeves.

CULTURE There isn't much sign of traditional Arabic music in Jordan, but you will find an interesting hybrid of Arab-style singers backed up by orchestras of western and traditional insturments everywhere you go. The Bedouin are still hanging on to their musical traditions, with groups of men singing trance-like chants to accompany a lone belly-dancer. Architecture is the predominant visual art in the Arab world, partly because Islam forbids the depiction of living things. Throughout Jordan you will find spectacular mosques, ancient ruins from the Roman Empire and earlier, and magnificent mosaics. The Qusayr 'Amra is notable for its frescoes, one of which shows a nude woman bathing - an unusual artform for this part of the world. The Qur'an is one of the finest examples of classical Arabic writing, while the Al-Mu'allaqaat is an even older collection of Arab poetry. One of the best-known works of Arab literature is Alf Layla wa Layla, A Thousand and One Nights, a collection of tales from several centuries and countries. Bedouin artworks include silver jewellery, colourful textiles and a wide range of knives. Hospitality is a cornerstone of Arab life. It is commonplace for Jordanian families, particularly desert dwellers, to welcome strangers into their home. The tradition developed from the harshness of desert life - without food, water and shelter from strangers, most desert travellers would die. Wherever you go in Jordan, you are likely to hear the word, 'Welcome', and you will frequently be invited into people's homes for food or a cup of tea.

    Jordan : Culture
Every year since the late 1950s, increasing numbers of Jordan's youth have received formal training in the nation's rapidly expanding education system. By the late 1980s, all children aged 6 years to twelve years were attending free and compulsory primary schools. Nearly 80% of children between the ages of 13 and 15 attended 3 years preparatory schools, also free and compulsory. But possession of an education, once a near certain vehicle for upward mobility, no longer guaranteed employment. Unemployment was likely one of the most critical issues facing Jordan in the late 1980s. It was accompanied by growing political frustration and radicalization over the Palestinian uprising in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Ajlun Al Balqa Al Karak Amman ... AskBabyNames @ 2008 MapZones

Located at the crossroads of history, the Middle East is the canvas upon which mankind has left a continuous record of our journey through time and space. The region is one of the world's most densely concentrated realms of cultural, religious, and geographic diversity. Wedged between the Mediterranean and the vast Arabian desert, interspersed with snow-capped mountains, fertile river valleys and ethereal rocky landscapes, the area beckons travelers with its endless attractions. Although generally best appreciated during the spring and autumn, the region's mountains are popular for winter skiing and summer escapes from the baking heat of the plains. The coast can be rainy in the winter, while Syria is marked by bitterly cold, dry winters. In the spring, the area is a glorious riot of wildflowers, with pleasantly warm days, occasionally marked by the khamsin -hot winds that blow in from the Sahara for a few days. Historically, the main cities of the region have developed along the coast, rivers, and the fertile oases that have provided rest and sustenance for travelers over thousands of years. The region has profited, economically and historically, from its key location: a fertile swathe of land sandwiched between the Mediterranean and the sweeping Arabian desert. Traders have been forced to pass through this narrow strip of civilization, leaving behind a cornucopia of cities and ruins of a time when caravanserais brought silk, spices and gold from east to west.

People of Jordan The population of Jordan is almost entirely Arab. The Circassians and the Armenians form the racial minorities but are barely 1 percent of the population. Jordan is 79 percent urban; nomads and semi nomads represent about 5 percent. Sunni Muslims are a majority and Shia Muslims form a small minority. Christians, about one-third of whom belong to the Greek Orthodox Church, represent 4 percent of the population. Economy of Jordan Jordan is almost landlocked and has inadequate supplies of water, which makes it unsuitable for agriculture. Limited natural resources have hampered economic growth. Jordan heavily depends upon foreign aid from its oil rich neighbors. Recently, Jordan has embarked on economic reforms to improve the economy. The Jordanian government has worked closely with the IMF, practiced careful monetary policy, made significant progress with privatization and liberalized the trade regime sufficiently in order to guarantee Jordan's membership in the Word Trade Organization. Flag of Jordan Jordan flag contains three equal horizontal bands
of black (top, the Abbassid Caliphate of Islam), white (the Ummayyad Caliphate of Islam), and green (the Fatimid Caliphate of Islam) with a red isosceles triangle (representing the Great Arab Revolt of 1916) based on the hoist side bearing a small white seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven verses of the opening Sura (Al-Fatiha) of the Holy Koran; the seven points on the star represent faith in One God, humanity, national spirit, humility, social justice, virtue, and aspirations.
