Spotlight on a Queen: Rania of the Hashemites
9 February 1999 By Adel Darwish Queen Rania Al-Abdallah, the woman they least expected to be their queen, has already found her way into the hearts of the Jordanian people.
As the drama of succession unfolded with conflict and jealousy in the court, especially among women, entered Rania as the angel who posses the healing touch that would fill the cracks and heal the rifts. Like her husband Abdallah, who still fighting a self-internal battle to adjust to the unexpected role, Rania was catapulted into the spotlight at a time when the world cameras focused on Amman. At 28, Rania possess good looks and a smart head over her slim shoulders. Those who met her, and many western diplomats, agree that she is destined to become a role model for the world's women like her step-mother in law Queen Noor. With her involvement in charity work, her common touch and being at ease in the presence of ordinary people, many expect her to fill the role left vacant by the demise of Diana Princess of wales. '' She will just be the perfect choice as a dazzling royal presiding over world charitable causes,'' said the wife of a high ranking western Queen official who met Rania last month.

Profile: Queen Noor

A glamorous figure viewed with mixed feelings by Jordanians
Queen Noor married King Hussein in 1978. She was born Lisa Halaby, daughter of a wealthy Arab-American father living in California. She has played a prominent role in the life of the kingdom of Jordan and became an international figure in her own right through a combination of glamour and good works. But Jordanians have never taken to her in quite the same way they did her predecessor, the late Queen Alia. She was educated at Princeton University Perhaps this is because, despite her Arab blood, she has always been seen as culturally alien to the mass of the population. International projects Since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, Queen Noor has taken up the fight for a worldwide ban on anti-personnel landmines. She was instrumental in launching the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty. She is also patron of several international organisations concerned with development, and the promotion of peace. King Hussein's constant companion for 20 years In Jordan, she is involved in numerous projects in health care, education, women's development and environmental protection.

Honored Guests, Faculty, Ladies and Gentlemen, and of course,
The Graduates of 2002: Now I have to warn you at the outset that I have been given a great deal more time than my fellow recipients, so I will do my best, as was so well expressed earlier. I know that you have many, many things that you are looking forward to. I have looked forward to this day for a very long time. In fact, for six years, since I was first invited for the 1996 graduation. I was hoping to speak here last year as well, but at least for me it is a great joy and pleasure that it is you that I share this day with and your family and your friends. Each time it seems Middle East politics and related difficulties intervened and, while they have stopped, today is the day. And Holyoke is certainly rich in good things. You have courses here I wish fervently had been available to me when I began my rather unusual career: Your Speaking, Arguing and Writing program would undoubtedly have helped diminish some of my agony over my early speeches and interviews; and your Center for Environmental Literacy could have provided excellent preparation for my extensive international work in the field of conservation.

Princeton Baccalaureate Address
HM Queen Noor
May 28, 2000
President Shapiro,
Dean Williamson,
Dear Friends,
And, especially, the Class of 2000 While I thank you with all my heart for the enormous privilege of sharing this pivotal moment in your lives you did present me with quite a daunting challenge. Despite a quarter-century of public life and activism, dealing daily with world leaders, movers and shakers, nothing has ever been quite as intimidating for me as returning to my academic roots, to my personal history, and to the sense of awe and humility inspired by the great minds that influenced me, whether artists, thinkers, statesmen or pioneering women. I always return with the instinctive anxiety and self doubt that characterized my search here for meaning and direction for the future course of my life once again the apprehensive student. In fact, this visit is, if anything, more reminiscent than usual, because while you have been relaxing after finishing your theses and exams, I have been working on what to say to you. I thus return to Princeton so long after my own Commencement, still feeling like I have a paper due! In my search for an authentic, meaningful, perhaps even motivating message for this occasion, I looked back to the path that led me first to Princeton and then beyond .
