Examples of how to use the pantoum in journal writing.

JOURNAL PANTOUMS
In the summer of 1998, I learned an ancient Indonesian verse form, the pantoum . Its circular way with words appealed to me, much as the mandala's circular way with images has done for years. The pantoum, as I was taught, is four stanzas with lines set up as follows: 1-2-3-4, 2-5-4-6, 5-7-6-8, 7-3-8-1. One ends up where one began, knowing it for the first time, to paraphrase T.S. Eliot. I soon began using the pantoum in my journal as a tool to reflect on events of day-to-day life. Whether visiting my mother at home shortly before she entered assisted living, discovering therapeutic horseback riding, celebrating Ed's and my 32nd anniversary, struggling with my progressing disability, helping my sisters clear out our childhood home, enjoying an early morning 3-wheeled bicycle ride, dealing with injuries from falls, watching a fern tree in my San Francisco garden, tandem biking with Ed, waiting for election returns, reflecting on how I write a poem, responding to yet another war started by the country of my birth, or celebrating 35 years of marriage to my Ed...I felt securely held within the circle cast by each pantoum. I offer examples here as encouragement to poets and not-yet-poets to give it a try. Remember, you only have to compose 8 new lines to complete a 16 line poem!

Educators are often encouraged to write journals - especially when they are training - but what does journal writing entail, what benefits can it bring, and how can we go about writing one?
contents introduction what is a journal? the benefits of writing and keeping a journal starting to write and keep a journal ... how to cite this article . see, also: research for practice The virtues of journal writing and keeping are often extolled by those concerned with creative, professional, personal and spiritual development. It is clear that many people have got a lot from journaling. This is Jennifer Moon (1999: 14-5):
What is a journal?
A journal is also a tool for self-discovery, an aid to concentration, a mirror for the soul, a place to generate and capture ideas, a safety valve for the emotions, a training ground for the writer, and a good friend and confidant. ( op. cit. It shares some qualities with things like logs and diaries - it records experiences and events over a period of time. However, writing and keeping journals also entails conscious reflection and commentary. Mary Louise Holly (1989: 20) makes this point well:

Hermaphroditic polar bears, melting ice caps, water shortages, rising sea levels, crop failures, and catastrophic storms: these are just a few of the consequences and predicted effects of global warming. Scientists cite buildings as the source of between 35% and 50% of greenhouse gas emissions annually, a fact which places architects at the center of the problem, but also mandates a disciplinary response. Most of the current debate surrounding sustainability relies on negative rhetoric (scare tactics) that incentivise immediate, realizable, pragmatic responses (LEED), rather than more radical and visionary solutions. Praxis 13 invites submissions of projects and essays that consider how architecture might use the logics of ecologies to move beyond received notions of sustainability. Submission deadline: September 1

W hat is Journal Writing? Journal writing is a learning tool based on the ideas that students write to learn. Students use the journals to write about topics of personal interest, to note their observations, to imagine, to wonder and to connect new information with things they already know. What is its purpose? Using journals fosters learning in many ways. Students who use journals are actively engaged in their own learning and have the opportunity to clarify and reflect upon their thinking. When students write in journals, they can record such things as ideas and feelings, special words and expressions they have heard, interesting things that have happened to them or information about interesting people. Journal writing offers students opportunities to write without fear often associated with marking. Every journal entry is individualized. How do I do it?

It is about your own impressions from anecdotal records of interactions between teachers, children, and other school personnel while being placed as an intern at a school site. 2. Good journal entries are sometimes about your own impressions and questions regarding what you read or discuss with your classmates. This should include experiences and personal connections made during this time. 3. A good journal entry is your own reflection on how you feel. Be sure to date your entries.

    Journal Writing
by Miriam Caldwell More from this Blogger One of my most therapeutic activities is writing in my journal. I try to make time each week to write in my journal. It is a time when I reflect back on my week, and all that has happened. It is also a time when I can express all of my feelings that I have kept inside all week. As I express my feelings, I can often see other sides to the situations that I am in. We are counseled to keep journals. I don't think that we are supposed to keep journals and then never let anyone read them. Our life experiences can benefit others. Whether we are struggling with raising a child going through a difficult phase, searching for a job, or suffering through a broken friendship, as we write about what problems we are facing, it can help those that read about our experience, as they face similar problems in the future. The best mode of learning is vicarious learning, especially with difficult experiences. It is also important to remember to put in the positive experiences, the million little blessings that we each receive in our lives. As we look back and read our journals, the list of the positive experiences, the funny comment that your three year old made to you that day, and the times when you are just happy. This will help hold you up in times of conflict and trials.

Effective Use of Student Journal Writing
Prepared by: Gary Cobine
ERIC Clearinghouse on Reading, English, and Communication Digest #99
The concept of a "communications triangle" of reading, writing, and discussing implies the need for a methodology whereby the teacher could stimulate the natural interaction of language uses in students to further linguistic development. Specifically, it implies the need for a method with which the teacher could connect reading and writing assignments to teach "the art of communicating" (Simpson, 1986) As the cornerstone of such a communications method, student journals have proven simple, yet effective (see Bromley, 1993) . For example, one secondary school teacher uses the following method: The teacher starts with an oral reading of a passage from literature, follows it up with journal writing about the passage, and ends with voluntary sharing of journal entries by students. Notably, during the journal writing, the teacher, as well as the students, writes about the passage. Then, both to model a critical response and to set the students at ease about sharing their own responses, the teacher shares his/her journal entry first. As a result of this technique, the students practice listening and speakingreciprocating in group discussion, and reading and writing criticallyrecognizing and evaluating their opinions and beliefs (Simpson, 1986)

Following is an early version of a chapter that was published as follows: Promoting journal writing in adult education (New Directions for Adult and Continuing Education, No. 90, pp. 19-26). San Francisco: Jossey-Bass. I have included it her exclusively for use by students who are interested in journaling. You may not cite or quote from it. Use the original source if needed for that purpose. Rog Hiemstra September, 2002 Journal writing in its variety of forms is used in various ways by adult learners; adult educators should consider the benefits in terms of enhancing learning and professional development.
Uses and Benefits of Journal Writing
Roger Hiemstra Adult educator Malcolm Knowles (1975) introduced readers to notions of personal reflection through activities such as self-assessment and proactive reading of materials. Another useful source is Christensen (1981), in which she describes how a diary can be used as a learning tool for adults. Brookfield (1987, 1995) provides various ideas pertaining to critically reflective writing through such tools as autobiography, critical incident citing, and seeing ourselves as others see us. However, even given more than three decades of use and attempts by a few adult educators to encourage personal reflection in various ways, journaling still remains underused as a teaching or learning tool. As a professor I have found tremendous value in the journaling process for those learners with whom I have interactions. Thus, this chapter reflects not only what others are saying about journal writing, but also my own personal experiences.

It becomes a guide, a mirror ... a confidant and friend . It is important to have a Journal that is a statement of who you are. For that reason, it is important to select your Journal carefully. Take time to select and set up your Journal in a way that suits you best. Feel free to change the type of book you use, as well. This is particularly true in the beginning as you select your Journal as you would a friend . Yet, you also will find that your Journal will change as you do.

Posted on October 4, 2010 by oldgreypoet 23 Comments I ought to write about it more frequently, I suppose, if only for the sake of the record.  Does no harm now and again to have nothing more significant to think about than the right way to prune the roses. I did get to see my first leaf fall of the season, though, and was much uplifted by it.  People ask me to take pictures, and show them, but I find myself disinclined to the use of the camera these days.  No matter how proficient the photographer, and how effective the camera there is, to me, much about my world that is un-photographable and the results are seldom satisfying.  A quick sketch with pen and wash says so much more to me these days.
