HOME LEARNING DEGREE PROGRAMS Environmental Journalism Activities The Environmental Journalism program is involved in numerous ongoing activities. Students can become involved in research, outreach and international activities. Each year the Environmental Journalism program organizes a Great Lakes Environmental Journalism Training Institute for twenty-five environmental journalists from the U.S. and Canada. This institute is held at MSU's Kellogg Center and the School of Journalism and brings together more than 20 environmental, scientific and journalistic experts to teach about Great Lakes environmental issues. Students are needed to help organize further programs for the Institute. By participating in the program, students are exposed to environmental journalists and become aware of the trends, needs, and resources in the field. The Environmental Journalism program has recently completed the largest survey ever done on environmental journalism in the United States to date . Future projects will examine environmental journalism in other nations. Student assistance is vital for the success of these research projects. The North American office of the International Federation of Environmental Journalists (IFEJ) is located at MSU. Members are located in over 100 countries and students can assist in organizing international conferences and communication among international journalists.

William Randolph Hearst William Randolph Hearst, the powerful owner and editor of the New York Journal, was one of the most colorful, influential, and outspoken figures involved in activities surrounding Spanish-American War. William Randolph Hearst, son of wealthy U.S. Senator George Hearst and Phoebe Apperson Hearst, was born in San Francisco in 1863. Hearst's passion for journalism began when he was a young man. As a student at Harvard, Hearst worked on the Harvard Lampoon and later apprenticed with New York World owner Joseph Pulitzer. When he was only 24 years old, Hearst's career as a publisher began. In 1887, with help from his father's mining fortune, Hearst became the owner and operator of the San Francisco Examiner. Hearst fashioned his paper after Pulitzers' sensationalist approach and flashy style. In 1895, Hearst turned to the east coast for his next journalistic endeavor and purchased the New York Journal. As the owner of the Journal, Hearst entered the fiercely competitive world of New York journalism. Positioned against his former mentor Joseph Pulitzer, Hearst recruited staff away from the World and continued to copy Pulitzer's style. The Cuban Revolution of 1895, came at a perfect time for Hearst and his New York Journal. With the eyes of a businessman and a politician, Hearst saw the events in Cuba as a way place himself and his paper on center stage.

Five Ws
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Redirected from 5 Ws Jump to: navigation search In journalism , the Five Ws (also known as the Five Ws (and one H) , or Six Ws ) is a concept in news style research , and in police investigations that are regarded as basics in information-gathering. It is a formula for getting the "full" story on something. The maxim of the Five Ws (and one H) is that for a report to be considered complete it must answer a checklist of six questions, each of which comprises an interrogative word
  • Who? Who was involved? What? What happened (what's the story)? Where? Where did it take place? When? When did it take place? Why? Why did it happen? How? How did it happen?

In British education, the Five W's are used quite often in Key Stage 3 (age 11-14) Literacy lessons. citation needed

The principle underlying the maxim is that each question should elicit a factual answer — facts necessary to include for a report to be considered complete. Importantly, none of these questions can be answered with a simple

Jump to: navigation search It's great to see these tutorials become part of olpc. For visitors who aren't familiar with this material, it was started by veteran newspaper editor Jack Driscoll of the Boston Globe when MIT launched a community news web site for community residents in Melrose, Mass., long before the phrase "citizen journalism" came into use. While Jack was writing for older "novice journalists," he's a master of telling a story clearly and concisely, so this page should be very useful for teachers and older children... For olpc xo users, some additions would be appropriate, especially as new tools are made available, possibly using the Speex and GStreamer audio for note taking as implied in the wishful-thinking paragraph below. For example, section 1.1 Research: Basic Tools You can take notes with the xo's keyboard camera and sound recorder , especially if paper and pens are harder to find than a little green laptop. You can speak your notes into the built-in microphone , then play them to refresh your memory when you type your story. The xo can
