The Supreme Court of the United States
The Supreme Court of the United States is the highest court in the land and the only part of the federal judiciary specifically required by the Constitution. The Constitution does not stipulate the number of Supreme Court Justices; the number is set instead by Congress. There have been as few as six, but since 1869 there have been nine Justices, including one Chief Justice. All Justices are nominated by the President, confirmed by the Senate, and hold their offices under life tenure. Since Justices do not have to run or campaign for re-election, they are thought to be insulated from political pressure when deciding cases. Justices may remain in office until they resign, pass away, or are impeached and convicted by Congress. The Court's caseload is almost entirely appellate in nature, and the Court's decisions cannot be appealed to any authority, as it is the final judicial arbiter in the United States on matters of federal law. However, the Court may consider appeals from the highest state courts or from federal appellate courts. The Court also has original jurisdiction in cases involving ambassadors and other diplomats, and in cases between states.

This graphic shows the tiers of the federal court system Graphic by Tony Rogers The bottom rung of the graphic represents federal federal district courts, where most federal court cases begin. However, unlike the local courts in the state court system, federal district courts - also known as U.S. District Courts - hear serious cases that involve violations of federal law. The next rung of the graphic represents specialized courts that deal with cases involving taxes, commerce and trade. The next rung represents the U.S. Courts of Appeals, where appeals of verdicts rendered in U.S. District Courts are heard. The top rung represents the U.S. Supreme Court. Like the U.S. Courts of Appeals, the Supreme Court is an appellate court. But the Supreme Court only hears appeals of cases that involve fundamental issues of the U.S. Constitution. When you are done with this section, take the Judicial Branch Quiz. The judicial branch interprets the laws of our land or makes sure that they are in line with the Constitution . If a situation or law does not agree with the Constitution it is said to be unconstitutional At the national level, the Supreme Court is the top court in the land. There are also many federal courts in the states that deal with the federal laws. There are two kinds of cases that the courts hear - criminal and civil cases. Civil cases have to do with people's rights being violated. Criminal cases have to do with crimes that have been committed. Most cases are heard before a jury . The jury is a group of 12 citizens who listen to evidence and arguments presented by the prosecution and defense in a case. The jury then decides the verdict or decision if the accused are guilty or innocent. The state also has courts. The highest court in the state of New York is the Court of Appeals. There are local courts as well. These are in the city, county and town level.

Federal government of the United States
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation search The U.S. Federal Government was formed in the eighteenth century, and the United States is considered to be the first modern national federation in the world. The details of American federalism have been debated ever since the establishment and ordination of the Constitution, with some parties making the case for expansive federal powers while others argue for a more limited role for the central government. Since the U.S. Civil War , the powers of the Federal Government have generally expanded greatly, although there have been periods when states' rights proponents have succeeded in limiting federal power through legislative action, executive prerogative or by constitutional interpretation of the courts. The seat of the Federal Government is in Washington, D.C . This has led to "Washington" commonly being used as a metonym for the federal government.

The Underground Railroad was a secret system of people (both black and white) and places that helped escaped slaves travel north to freedom. (It was not actually a railroad, but the people involved in it used railroad terms to describe their actions. For example, conductors were people who traveledwith slaves along their route.) The Underground Railroad's routh extended from the northern US states to Canada. In Canada, escaped slaves could no be re-captured by their "owners" in the northern, free US states, "owners" could legally re-capture their slaves. It is estimated that about 100,000 slaves escaped to freedom using the Underground Railroad. United States of America The United States of America is a country in North America.
