A kangaroo is any of several large macropods (the marsupial family that also includes the wallabies tree kangaroos wallaroos pademelons and the quokka : 45 species in all). The term kangaroo is sometimes used in a broader sense to refer to all members of the macropod family. Kangaroos are native to the continent of Australia The word kangaroo is said to derive from the Guugu Yimidhirr (an Australian Aboriginal language ) word gangurru, referring to the Grey Kangaroo (see photo to the right). The name was first recorded as kangaru by Joseph Banks on James Cook 's first voyage of exploration, when they were beached at the mouth of the Endeavour River in the harbour of modern Cooktown for almost 7 weeks repairing their ship which had been damaged on the Great Barrier Reef Kangaroo soon became adopted into standard English where it has come to mean any member of the family of kangaroos and wallabies. The belief that it means "I don't understand" is a popular

Some Interesting Facts About Marsupials (and especially Kangaroos)
  • The name marsupial comes from the marsupium, or pouch, in which these animals carry and nurse their young.
  • Marsupials have very short gestation periods (the time the young spend in the mother's tummy). The Virginia opossum (the only marsupial in Michigan) has a gestation period of only 13 days, and the young are only the size of a question mark when they are born. The Red Kangaroo, native to Australia, has a 30 day gestation period and the single baby weighs only 1 gram (.035 ounces) when it is born. The baby kangaroo, called a joey, spends about 235 days in the mother's pouch.
  • Australia has about 120 species of marsupials, New Guinea has 53 species of marsupials, South and Central America have 90 species of marsupials, and North America has only two species of marsupials.
  • Marsupials range in size from tiny shrew-like creatures (5 grams) to large kangaroos (over 200 pounds). There are marsupials that have occupied every available niche from tiny insect eaters to large plant eaters. There are even marsupial moles!
  • Marsupials first evolved in South America about 100 million years ago. At that time, South America, Australia and Antarctica were connected together in one big continent. Australia and Antarctica gradually moved away from South America and both continents became isolated. Marsupial mammals were free to evolve in isolation, and evolution produced the characteristics found in present day Australian mammals.

    Kangaroos and wallabies
Kangaroos and wallabies are pouched mammals, or marsupials, of Australia and nearby islands that are famous for their great leaping ability. The name kangaroo is usually used for large species and wallaby for smaller ones. They all belong to the family Macropodidae Some kangaroos live in social groups and others are completely solitary. In general, the larger animals and the ones that live in open grasslands are more social. Within a group, called a mob, the individuals are safer. In a mob, the dominant male competes with the others to become the father of most of the offspring, called joeys. Because the dominant male is generally larger than the other males (called boomers), over many generations the males have become considerably larger than the females (called does).
The difficult life of a newborn kangaroo
For such a large animal, the gestation period (pregnancy) is incredibly short. The longest among the kangaroos is that of the eastern gray. The baby is born after only 38 days. It is less than an inch long, blind, and hairless like the newborns of all marsupials.

... Cryptozoology > Phantom Kangaroos Phantom Kangaroos by Davy Russell POSTED: 30 January 99 It’s hard to believe that Australian kangaroos could be hopping around all over the United States. But what’s even harder to imagine is that these out-of-place marsupials appear to posses supernatural abilities as they rummage through the backyards of bewildered people in California, Illinois, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Ohio, and Indiana, to name a few. Phantom kangaroos have been spotted in a variety of urban and rural settings and are said to be particularly hostile. They are described to be 3.5 - 5.5 feet tall with glowing eyes and ghostly characteristics. They have been blamed for slaughtering numerous dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, and other small animals in areas with high kangaroo activity. According to W. Haden Blackman’s Field Guide to North American Monsters , the first reported phantom kangaroo sighting was on June 12, 1899 in Richmond, Wisconsin.

    WHAT IS A KANGAROO?
Kangaroos, or "roos" (a common abbreviation) are perhaps the most widely recognised Australian native animal. As a symbol of Australia, roos are constantly used by Australian businesses and organisations to display their patriotism and pride towards their homeland.
RED KANGAROOS (Macropus rufus) Red Kangaroos are named after their distinctively red fur, a result of evolution, likening them to their native habitat of the arid plains and bush land of the central Australian outback. Although the males possess this feature, female Reds often have more of a blue/grey colour to their fur and are sometimes to referred to as Blue-fliers. Reds are the largest breed of Kangaroo, and also the biggest marsupial in existence today, measuring an average of 5'11" (180cm) in height and weighing around 200lb (90kg). Red Joeys become independent from their mothers at a relatively young age due to their predatory environment and need to learn quickly if they are going to avoid being the dinner of a fox, eagle or dingo. Their superior long-range vision is essential to their survival on the open plains, but Reds' have poor short-range sight.

    76. The Cryptid Zoo: Kangaroos In Cryptozoology
Wild kangaroos are often sighted in places where they are not supposed to be native. Does North America have an undiscovered marsupial?
    http://www.newanimal.org/kanga.htm
The Cryptid Zoo: Kangaroos What are kangaroos doing in a website that is devoted to cryptozoology ? Kangaroos are perfectly real creatures, after all. Cryptozoology is about creatures that might or might not be real. The answer is that some kangaroos are perfectly real and are not disputed by scientists, while others are highly controversial. Those kangaroos that live in Australia are perfectly normal beasts, but those reported in sightings from places such as North America are often bizarre. The existence of a stable North American breeding population of kangaroos has never been confirmed, even though sightings are quite common. Some breeding populations of feral kangaroos in Europe have been accepted as real by mainstream scientists, but not in enough places to account for the widespread spatial scale of European kangaroo sightings. The escapes of occasional pet kangaroos in Europe and North America do not seem to explain the sheer number of sightings, and escapes from zoos or the circus are rare, with the animals generally being recaptured within a few days at most. Most explanations of these cryptid kangaroos do not rest on sightings of escaped kangaroos. Instead, the mainstream scientists and the cryptozoologists have gone in different directions with their theories. Mainstream science tends to suggest that such sightings are based on sheer hallucination or mistaken observations of more ordinary creatures, such as feral dogs. Cryptozoologists tend to hypothesize that, at some point in the past, feral kangaroos established a breeding population. A few explanations go much farther and propose that North America has a native undiscovered marsupial that is related to the mostly extinct South American marsupials.

    Australian Gold Coins
Australian Kangaroo Gold Coins are Australia's basic 1-oz gold bullion coins . Initially introduced in 1987, they were called Gold Nuggets because they carried on their reverse an image of the largest gold nugget ever found, the 2,284-oz Welcome Stranger nugget, which was found in Western Australia in 1869. However, in 1990 the Welcome Stranger image was replaced with kangaroo images, which the Perth Mint changes every year. Still, the word "Nugget" was stamped on the obverse (front) of the coins until 2008, and the coins were often called "Kangaroo-Nuggets." Now, though, the coins are mostly known as
