The North Central Kansas Libraries System is a regional System of cooperating libraries whose purpose is to better utilize human and material resources by sharing programs and services.
WHAT IS A LIBRARY SYSTEM?
North Central Kansas Libraries System is a regional system of cooperating libraries serving and governed by local public libraries in this area of the state.
WHAT IS THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK FOR LIBRARY SYSTEMS IN KANSAS?
North Central Kansas Libraries System (NCKL) is one of seven regional library systems in the State of Kansas established by law in 1965 (K.S.A. 75-2547 through 57-2552). The law states: "The purpose of this act is for the State in cooperation with local libraries to provide adequate library services to all citizens of the State through the regional systems of cooperating libraries herein provided, by use of joint planning and financing of library services to improve existing service, to utilize such federal aid funds as may be available and to extend library service to persons not having the same at this time." (K.S.A. 75-2547)

The State Library of Kansas and the Kansas Center for the Book will kick off the Sixth Annual Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week with Kansas First Lady Stacy Parkinson reading at Hilltop Child Development Center on the University of Kansas campus. The 2010 book selection, Up, Down and Around by Katherine Ayres focuses on food, nutrition and where our food comes from.

May / June Newsletter Excerpt The State Library of Kansas and the Kansas Center for the Book proudly announces Up, Down and Around by Katherine Ayres as the selection for the Sixth Annual Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week.  Kansas First Lady Stacy Parkinson will serve as honorary chair for the special week, Nov. 14-20, 2010.  “Reading to our children is a great way to spur their imagination and help establish a life-long love of learning,” said First Lady Parkinson.  “I am honored to serve as the chair of this effort, and I encourage every adult to take time to read to a child.”

Interlibrary Loan for the North Central Kansas Libraries
Interlibrary loan is a valuable service that provides library patrons in the North Central Kansas Libraries region access to materials not available at their local libraries. Materials are provided by other member libraries of the North Central Kansas Libraries system, as well as other libraries throughout Kansas and out-of-state libraries.
LOAN PERIODS AND FEES
Materials may be borrowed for the length of time designated by the lending library and should be returned to them by the specified due date. There are generally no fees for interlibrary loan services; however, fees may be charged by out-of-state libraries. The borrowing library is responsible for return postage.
LOST ITEMS
If an item is lost, either in return mail or by the patron and attempts to locate the item have failed, the borrowing library should consult the for more information.
Remember to keep the lending library informed of the situation.
DAMAGED ITEMS
If material is returned to the borrowing library damaged, the library should follow their policy on damaged materials. The item and the funds for replacement should be sent to the lending library.

North Central Kansas Libraries MailA-Book services is a book lending service for rural residents and homebound city readers from the North Central Kansas Libraries System region.

Mail-a-Book Services for North Central Kansas Libraries
A Mail-A-Book catalog is provided to residents of NCKL who live in rural areas and who do not have easy access to a library. This service is funded by taxes paid by residents in their counties. Homebound city residents may also qualify. The collection consists primarily of paperback books. Books are mailed to the patrons with return postage included. This program serves approximately 850 patrons.
The collection contains a variety of fiction and nonfiction books.
A genre list for the fiction includes popular romance, romance, regency romance, inspirational fiction, mystery, westerns, science fiction, large print, youth and children.
Categories for the nonfiction include hobbies, cook books, true crime, and through the State of Kansas Library Audio Books Online
