Kentucky Geography and Regions
Geography Kentucky borders seven states, from both the Midwest and the Southeast. West Virginia lies to the east, Virginia to the southeast, Tennessee to the south, Missouri to the west, Illinois and Indiana to the northwest, and Ohio to the north and northeast. Kentucky's northern border is formed by the Ohio River and its western border by the Mississippi River; however, the official border is based on the courses of the rivers as they existed when Kentucky became a state in 1792.
Rivers are an important feature of Kentucky geography. The Ohio River forms the entire northern boundary of the state, flowing southwest below Covington, until it joins the Mississippi River at Paducah. In the east, the Big Sandy River and its tributary, the Tug Fork, form the boundary with West Virginia. Many rapid creeks in the Cumberland Mountains feed the Kentucky, the Cumberland, and the Licking rivers, which, together with the Tennessee and the Ohio, are the chief rivers of the state. The Kentucky Dam on the Tennessee River near Paducah is a major part of the Tennessee Valley Authority system.

Cumberland Plateau covers the eastern quarter of the state and the western border is covered by the Appalachians. At its western edge, the plateau meets the uplands of the Lexington Plain also known as the Bluegrass Region. The most level area of the state consists of the western coalfields surrounded by the Pennyroyal to the east and the Ohio River to the north. In the far west are the coastal plains of the Mississippi River. This region is commonly known as the Purchase as it is purchased from the Chickasaw Indians.
The highest point in Kentucky is Black Mountain on the southeastern boundary in Harlan County, at 4,139 ft (2,162 m). The lowest point is along the Mississippi River in Fulton County at 257 ft (78 m),. The state's mean altitude is 750 ft (229 m).
Cumberland Lake, Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkely, and Dale Hollow Lake straddle are large artificial lakes of Kentucky. Kentucky, 259 mi (417 km); the Cumberland, partly in Tennessee; the Tennessee, also in Tennessee and Alabama; and the Big Sandy, Green, Licking, and Trade water rivers are the important rivers of Kentucky.
Completion in 1985 of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, linking the Tennessee and Tombigbee rivers in Alabama, gave Kentucky's Appalachian coalfields direct water access to the Gulf of Mexico for the first time.

Physical Geography Program The Department The Department of Geography at the University of Kentucky includes 21 full-time faculty, two faculty jointly appointed with other programs, two professional teaching staff, and six adjunct faculty. Of these, seven are directly involved in physical geography, and another six support the program through research or teaching in GIS or environmental geography. In the tradition of geography coursework growing out of geology programs in the U.S., the first geography courses (physiography) appeared in the official UK Catalogue in 1923. Two years later, courses on Economic Geography and Conservation of Natural Resources were added, followed by an introductory two-semester course titled Elements of Geography. By the mid-1930s several different academic departments at the University offered geography courses. World War II fostered a rapidly escalating demand for geographic information and problem solving techniques. In 1944, the University authorized the founding of a new Department of Geography within the College of Arts and Sciences.
