Mount Kenya Culture
Mount Kenya provides much fertile land to the numerous tribes who live on the mountain’s slopes. The largest of these tribes are the Kikuyu, Ameru, Maasai and the Embu. They survive and make their living through agriculture and by hunting the mountain’s rich array of wildlife. Kikuyu
The Kikuyu people are Kenya’s largest ethnic group with a population of around 5,000,000 or roughly 18% of Kenya’s overall population. They arrived in Kenya during the Bantu migration and settled around Mount Kenya while the majority of their Bantu relations travelled further afield to South Africa and surrounding countries. Agriculture is the Kikuyu’s main means of survival; they grow bananas, sugarcane, beans, millet, arum lily, maize and an array of different vegetables thanks to the nutrient rich soils of the mountain. They also raise livestock, namely cattle, goats and sheep, which they use for both food and for bartering with other local tribes who live on the mountain’s slopes. The Kikuyu people believe their god, Ngai, lived on Mount Kenya and indeed the tribe’s father, Gikuyu, often climbed the mountain to speak with him. Living on the southern and western sides of the mountain, Kikuyu’s always built their houses with the door facing towards Mount Kenya’s slopes – though this tradition is no longer as popular as it once was. The Kikuyu people call Mount Kenya ‘Kiri Nyaga’, which translates to ‘has ostriches’ – the mountain itself can resemble an ostrich with it’s black body and white (snowy) tip.

Kenya : Culture
Kenya’s ethnic diversity has produced a variety and richness of cultural forms that reflect African, Asian, and European influences. Visual arts are not highly important in contemporary Kenya, although varieties of wood and clay sculpture are produced for the tourist trade. Kenya, a country of diverse and rich cultural traditions, seeks to cultivate and develop those traditions to ensure that its valuable cultural assets are not irretrievably lost and that social cohesion is not undermined in the process of change to newer ways. A National Archive Service has been established, and it is saving an increasing number of documents. A national library service board has also been established to equip, maintain, and develop libraries in Kenya, including a branch library service. Kenya's national museum contains collections of wildlife, archaeological remains, and objects of material culture. The Kenya National Theatre is incorporated in the Kenya Cultural Centre. The National Theatre School was founded in 1968 to provide professional training in theatrical techniques, which include the writing of plays by Kenyan authors and the performance of traditional music and dance. Music and dance play an integral role in social and religious life. Rhythm, all-important, is largely provided by the drum, supplemented by wind and stringed instruments. Swahili literature, both oral and written, is traditional in form and content. Contemporary novelists, including Ngugi wa Thiong'o and Mugo Gatheru, deal with the social frictions between traditional and modern society. Visual arts are largely confined to the mass production of wood sculpture for the tourist trade. Elimo Njau and Ronal Rankin are popular Kenyan painters.

There are about 42 different tribes in Kenya - each of these with its own unique culture, but majority of them with intertwining cultural practices brought about by the close resemblance in the languages, the similar environment and physical proximity of the tribes. The tribes are grouped into larger sub-groups - based on their cultural and linguistic similarities. There are three major unifying categories of languages: the Bantu speaking people of the Coastal region, the Central Highlands and the Western Kenya Region, The Nilotes who are mainly found in the Rift Valley and the Lake Victoria Region and the Cushites who are mainly composed of pastoralists and nomads in the drier North Eastern part of the country. Of note is that these sub-groups span a vast area of not just Kenya, but the East, Central and Southern African Region as a whole. In Kenya it is possible to leave Nairobi, a city with bustling activity, and drive in just a few hours to a place where life is lived in accordance to tradition and custom, where warriors armed with spears drive cattle into thorn brush enclosures to protect them from lions at night.

Culture is an eclectic mix of the way people in a society live through their beliefs, traditions, their fondness towards specific art, music, food and much more. It is far from easy to define the culture of a country as a whole. In terms of Kenya, we can be overwhelmed by the differences in culture across many civilizations. Kenya is home to over 40 ethnic groups or tribes such as the Kikuyu, Swahili and Masai, who all distinguish themselves through their perceptiveness of the world. We can discuss some of the elements of Kenya culture and how they are applied to the nation that is Kenya. However, the best way to learn about the Kenya culture is to discover this country for yourself and meet the people face-to-face.
