In 1500, the Portuguese colonized Kenya, but by the 17th century Oman and the other Arab nations ousted this colonial power and took control. The Arabs had control of Kenya until 1885, when British signed an agreement with Oman releasing the east African colony into England's colonial commonwealth. Kenya finally gained complete independence in 1963. Kenya's population consists mostly of black Africans, with Arabs, Europeans and Asians holding the minorities. The black Africans are divided into 40 ethnic groups. These groups belong to four linguistic families - Bantu, Nilo-hamitic, Nilotic, and Hamitic. The four largest ethnic groups inn these families are: Bantu-speaking(Kikuyu), Bantu(Luhya), Bantu(Kamba), and Nilotic(Luo).

History of Kenya
Written records and archeological evidence are the two primary sources of historical information about Kenya. The written records focus on the coastal region primarily because of its rich history of trade with the southern Arab nations. The Kenyan interior, however, remained mostly undocumented prior to the 19th century. The arrival of the Europeans brought an end to the mystery of this diverse region of the world.
Archeology reveals the secrets of the development of civilization in the Kenyan heartland. The Rift Valley, which runs through the center of Kenya, has long been regarded as the cradle of civilization. Charles Darwin perpetuated this theory in his work On The Origin of Species . Darwin's theory that humans and the higher apes probably had a common ancestor led to the conclusion that humankind originated where the apes were found: East Africa. Early archeological discoveries at Lake Turkana in Kenya, at the Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, and along the Kagera River in Uganda support Darwin's guesswork with hard evidence. Ancient hominoid, or human-like skulls dating back 21/2 million years were discovered at these sites. Although archeologists believe there were originally at least three different species of hominid roaming the plains of Kenya, evidence suggests only one species evolved and developed into Homo sapiens. The Rift Valley region, therefore, earns the distinction in most archeological circles as the area where man first stood upright and began his life-long quest for food and water.

THE CRADLE OF MANKIND (4,400,000 BC-50, 000 BC):
In 1911, Prof. Kattwinkel, a German entomologist, fell down a deep narrow gorge when he was seeking after an unusual butterfly. This place was Olduvai Gorge found in Serengeti. The fall was not easy, but the scientist in away was able to save his life. Then he raised his ayes, and only a scientist would have appreciated that the rocky wall was an extraordinary fossil bed. This changed man’s conception about his own origin. To clearly tell the history of Kenya, we must start from the very beginning up to the dawn of mankind. The great names of scientists whose pioneering theories about the evolution of species and natural selection advanced the progress of a revolution in the 19th century Victorian science include; Larmarct, Darwin, Bladlace, Huxley, Haeckel and others. This is because they put forward an opinion that man and apes had a similar progenitor, in contrast to the biblical view of one creation.
Ernst Haeckel assumed the existance of an ape-man, known as pithecanthropus, who could have lived in a sunken continent known as Lemuna,, near India.

Early History to Independence
During the 1950s and 60s, the anthropologist L. S. B. Leakey discovered in N Tanzania the remains of hominids who lived c.2 million years ago. These persons, perhaps the earliest humans on earth, most likely also inhabited S Kenya. In the Kenya highlands, the existence of farming and domestic herds can be dated to c.1000 B.C. Trade between the Kenya coast and Arabia was brisk by A.D. 100. Arabs settled on the coast during medieval times, and they soon established several autonomous city-states (including Mombasa, Malindi, and Pate). Farmers and herders traveled S from Ethiopia and settled in Kenya in c.2000 B.C. There is also evidence that Bantu-speaking people and Nilotic speakers from the S Sudan settled in Kenya between 500 B.C.
