Kindergarten Readiness Program
Children benefit greatly from a kindergarten readiness program. These educational programs are setup to teach children what they need to know for kindergarten and beyond. The lessons learned in kindergarten will help children develop an education foundation that will help them succeed in school and later in life. Sometimes, parents have trouble reaching their kindergartener, getting past their own preconceived ideas on how reading and math should be taught. In the past, educators thought that there was only one way to teach children. Through education research, teachers and parents are learning that there isn't a perfect kindergarten readiness program that is right for every child. There is no one way to teach reading and math. A kindergarten readiness program should be geared to a variety of learning styles. Time4Learning offers

... Learn to Read, Teaching Your Child to Read at Home, Toddlers, Preschool Activities Learning to Read - Teaching Your Child At Home Itís never too early to begin teaching your child how to read. This is one of the more important and rewarding gifts you can give to your child. By encouraging children to read, you will open the doors to a whole world of information and knowledge.
Children first learn to love reading by having stories read to them aloud. They soon want to learn how to read them selves, and you can encourage this by pointing out the pictures in the books and calling them by their names. You will soon find that your child loves to join in. You can also follow each word with your finger, this way your child will start to recognize the letters of the alphabet and what each letter sounds like.

TRACEABLE LETTERS PRINTED ON EACH LINE
12-15 letters typical for Portrait mode - 16-22 letters typical for Landscape Mode
Type a few words - a group of letters or short sentence in the space below.
Click "Make Worksheet" and watch the magic! Back to Main Index DIRECTIONS
Type child's name - phrase - or short sentence above. Click the "Make Worksheet" button and the program automatically creates a full sized practice worksheet. If letters do not fit on one line, try switching to LANDSCAPE mode. This basic Kindergarten handwriting style teaches "true" printing skills. It is also the letter style most often used in early elementary reading books, thereby increasing visual word memorization leading to improved reading ability. Letters will print at the larger 3/4 inch size but will print smaller if you have many letters on one line. There are 6 rows of letters created in this handwriting program. The first 5 rows are traceable letters. The 6th row gives a "starting dot" for each letter to see if students can successfully write letters on their own. 12-15 letters typically fit on one line when printing in the normal PORTRAIT mode. 16-22 letters can fit on one line if switching to LANDSCAPE mode. To print using LANDSCAPE mode (widest side horizontal), make your worksheet above - then go to the upper left of your screen and select - FILE - PRINT - PROPERTIES - LANDSCAPE. While the general rule of thumb is that bigger letters are easier to trace, this is not always the case since very large letters require significantly increased movement and hand flexibility - sometimes beyond a child's capability. If your child has trouble with these large letters, try the smaller letters from the

Guided Reading in Kindergarten
INTRODUCTION

My, how the kindergarten curriculum has changed in my years of teaching. I firmly believe in providing my students with a developmentally appropriate curriculum. However, in the past few years the kindergarten curriculum has accelerated tremendously. Kindergarten children are expected to go to first grade with beginning reading skills. In order to teach the state mandated objectives while providing developmentally appropriate activities, I developed this approach to reading in kindergarten. First of Year Approach After the initial assessment of each child in my class, I group them according to their academic and developmental level. This enables me to work with children that need help learning their letters, beginning sounds, etc. while introducing emergent reading text to children who are ready to begin reading in small group situations. I use the Building Blocks philosophy in whole group instruction which introduces objectives in a multilevel format. To read more about the Four Blocks/Building Blocks approach to reading visit Patricia Cunningham's web site.
Students in my classroom are placed in five groups. They rotate through five literacy based centers each week, included Guided Reading. I see at least three groups everyday. I call groups from other centers as I finish each group. Each group is assigned a color. (I choose activities for each group based on their academic level. However, this discussion is based on the groups ready for guided reading).
