Static electricity
Blow up a balloon and tie a knot in it. Rapidly rub the balloon on a woolen sweater, and after which place the balloon near a piece of paper. The rubbing motion charges the balloon with static electricity and hence gives the balloon magnetic properties, which enable it to lift light weight objects. Try to find out which additional objects stick to the balloon.
Mixture and compound
It is possible to demonstrate the difference between mixture and compound by preparing two simple recipes:
  • Fruit salad - mixture Cake - compound
  • Mixture is accomplished by combining two different substances so that each substance maintains its own identity/properties and does not change. The mixture can be separated into its original substances.

    Science Lessons - skills lists
    Create an atmosphere of exploration
Teaching kindergarten science lessons and a learning environment full of energy and enthusiasm naturally go together. Find out what science skills kids need to learn and what they need to know about life, physical, and earth and space science. When teaching kids science lessons, fill the children’s environment with opportunities to explore and materials to record their observations.
What science skills should children learn?
Skills lists vary geographically, but in general, when teaching science lessons include opportunities for your students to practice the skills of observation, collecting, and communicating. The skills are the framework for teaching the topics of life, physical, and earth and space sciences.

January 16, 2001: Separating Liquids and Floating Eggs
Today our students learned three important scientific principles:
    • All matter in our world can be categorized as solid, liquid or gas. Different liquids can have different densities. The molecules are more compact in some substances than others.
In our first experiment, our scientists poured equal amounts of oil, water and syrup into a large glass. Some had guessed that the liquids would all mix, others guessed that the liquids would separate. In the end, we learned that the syrup, the most dense liquid, sunk to the bottom. Water sat in the middle, and oil rose to the top. As a bonus, we decided to drop some solids into our solution. After making hypotheses, we found the penny to lie on the bottom of all the liquids, a lego brick to sit on top of the water, and a wood chip to float on top of the oil. Here's what the children had to say: "The penny was more dense than all the liquids." "The lego is heavier than the oil but not as dense as the syrup." "The liquids are all more dense than the wood chip."

Along Came A Spider A Thematic Unit About Our Creepy, Crawly, Eight-Legged Friends
October is the month for spiders!
Even children who are afraid of these wonderful bugs are captivated by pictures and stories about spiders, from Charlotte's Web to The Very Busy Spider to everyone's favorite fingerplay, The Itsy Bitsy Spider On this page you'll find many wonderful ideas and activities for studying spiders, plus songs, poems, and suggested books. To find out more about a book, click on the cover or the title to go to Amazon.com, then use your browser's BACK button to return here for more great ideas. Amazon will save your books in your electronic shopping cart until you're ready to check out, now or anytime in the next 90 days.
Getting Started After the song and poem, I make a Language Experience / KWL chart about spiders, listing the facts my students know and also the things they'd like to learn. We also make a graph ... Are You Afraid of Spiders? I have groups of students draw large webs with black marker on orange bulletin board paper. We hang these around the room, and use them for recording facts we know (and learn) about spiders. At the end of the first week of spider study, we transfer these facts to single pieces of construction paper, and individual students illustrate the pages to make a class book. Many of the activities I use are listed below, along with great ideas from KinderKorner mailing list members. Have a great time teaching and learning about spiders!

Science Center Activities Frog Match This activity is designed to be used with the plastic frogs found at Dollar Tree (called "Rainforest Creatures...they come with 9 or 10 in a pack). To make it, print and cut out the lily pads (above). Children read the simple descriptions (color words) on the lily pads to match the frogs to the correct lily pads. I make the activity more exciting by adding tongs to pick up the frogs and magnifying glasses to examine them carefully. Insect Information This is another activity designed to be used with Dollar Tree animals. The insects are very realistic looking and come in packages of 6 (also called "Rainforest Creatures"). Print out insect information sheet and the insect labels (above). You can choose to leave the information sheet whole or cut it apart into cards. You will need to cut the insect labels out (I have 2 sets because I purchased 2 packages of insects). Children match the labels to the plastic insects by reading the descriptions and looking at the real photos on the information sheet. You can add tongs and magnifying glasses to this activity also! Magnifying Pictures This is a great activity for introducing magnifying glasses in the beginning of the year. Print out the 3 sets of "magnifying picture cards" (above)transportation set, living things set, and fruit set. I printed each set onto different shades of cardstock (white, gray, or beige) just to make organization easier. Leave the large pictures in a whole sheet (work mat) but cut the tiny pictures into individual cards. Children use magnifying glasses to enlarge the tiny pictures and then match them to the larger pictures. This is an easy way to show children how magnifying glasses work!

When you are teaching about plants, students will grasp material better with an activity that stimulates learning and promotes student mastery of concepts.
  • Parts of a Plant
  • Review the parts of a plant while students enjoy arts and crafts during instruction. To use this activity in your class, you need a copy of a plant color sheet for each student, an actual plant, crayons or colored pencils. Show your students the actual plant and review the parts of plants with them. Make sure to point out and explain where each part is and its function to the students. For example, the roots are underneath the soil and their function is transport water and nutrients (food) in the soil to the rest of the plant, and so forth. The essential parts students learn at this stage are roots, stems, leaves and flowers.

  • Praying Mantis Observation
  • Observe praying mantis eggs until they hatch. Share with the students in your kindergarten class the process of laying eggs. Talk about how the female praying mantis squeezes foam out of her body then squeezes eggs into the foam, which hardens around the eggs to protect them. Purchase an egg pod and string it from a branch. Put the branch inside a plastic soda bottle or a cardboard box if you want to continue observing the praying mantis babies after they are born. Seal the opening of the soda bottle or box with craft foam that lets air filter through the opening, but seals it so that the babies can't get out. Check the pod regularly and discuss the gestation process with your students. Have the students predict what they think the babies will look like. The gestation process can last up to three weeks. Observe the babies when they hatch and feed them fruit flies before letting them free.
