Kiribati : Culture
The Constitution published at freedom establishes Kiribati as a sovereign democratic republic and guarantees the fundamental rights of its citizens. The unicameral House of Assembly has 42 members: 40 elected representatives, one appointed member from Banaba island, and the Attorney General on an exofficio basis. All of the members of the Maneaba serve 4-year terms. The speaker for the legislature is elected by the Maneaba from outside of its membership and is not a voting member of Parliament. The judicial system consists of the High Court, a court of appeal, and magistrates' courts. All judicial appointments are made by the president.

Rising sea levels are the most urgent threat to the low lying islands of the Pacific.
The Republic of Kiribati, in Micronesia, is among those most at risk, averaging less than 2 metres above sea level.
But while the future of these 33 islands is uncertain...the i-Kiribati are determined to safeguard their culture, no matter what.

Inevitably dancing and feasting are common threads of life in Kiribati. Where people gather, there is bound to be laughter, merry making and dancing and feasting. The following shows some insights into a typical social function.Return to Life in Kiribati
Where There is Food There is Bound To Be Feasting
In any gathering, the underlying elements are food and drinks for the feast. The more food there is the more serious is the party. Seen here is a gathering of people around a table of food and drinks. This is a core part of our community involvement in our local affairs. Where there is a festival, there is food, and willing people who join in the festival. The stable food of the I-Kiribati people centre around fish. Their bigger environment is the Pacific Ocean, which is rich in sea resources including lagoon and ocean marine life and fish. Fish for Kiribati is readily available and even women can sustain their stable diet of fish by fishing using local or conventional means. The I-Kiribati people are well adapted to their marine environment. There have been stories of Kiribati fishermen roaming the pacific ocean for long periods of time living off the ocean for food found available in the ocean during these long journeys. Return to

Appendix #1: Information on Kiribati for students or teachers
Kiribati was one of the Micronesian Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It lies on the equator south of Hawaii and Marshall Islands. Kiribati was so unique because of its own history, culture, people, food and their language. As for the history of Kiribati, it was beginning in the 18 th century when two British captains, Gilbert and Marshall, discovered the central and northern islands of the Gilberts group, which they named Gilberts. While the Gilbert Islands group became independent in July 1979. The majority of the coral islands of both Gilberts and Ellice consist of ring shaped atolls or coral reefs that surround lagoons. http://www.janeresture.com/kiribati_history/egan22.html th century.
