Knitting in the News: Helping Others and the Business of Knitting
Friday October 29, 2010 zSB(3,3) You can tell the holiday season is getting closer because stories of how knitters are or can help other people are dominating the knitting news. A Florida radio show host is calling on listeners to knit for babies in Afghanistan . The "Knit Pray Love" campaign aims to get people knitting and praying for preemies and other babies in war-ravaged country. The host, Brant Hansen, will be taking the knit items at least three boxes' worth to Afghanistan next month (local knitters in Palm Beach still have time to get their items to the station, WAY-FM). Knitters at a senior center in Winnipeg work every night on knit items to keep local kids warm , but they say they're running out of yarn. The knitters say they'll use any scraps people have to offer, and the yarn received last year during a similar appeal was used to create more than 10,000 knit items for kids.

    another happy handmade halloween
Mr. Six and a Pokeball hula girl I was cutting out the pieces for S's Mr. Six costume on Saturday morning, but I made it! By Sunday, the kids' costumes were all done and I'd even found time to improve that crappy looking cummerbund I'd made for Mr. Six. Mr. Six's bow tie and cummerbund were from McCalls 4290. Turns out, I could have skipped the cummerbund entirely because it was so chilly that S had to keep his jacket closed the whole night. The jacket was from Simplicity 3997 and looked awesome! It came together very quickly and really made the costume. The pokeball costume was made from Simplicity 3993 (the same pattern I used for the boys' pumpkin costumes four years ago ). The little quilting experience I have helped me rework the pieces into colored sections and stitch on the big circle applique in the center. Recalling some quilt labels I'd made with inkjet printer fabric, I thought that what the pokeball really needed was a big Pokemon sign across the chest. I found an image online, printed it out on the fabric, stitched it on, and it was perfect! The Six Flags logo on S's jacket was made the same way. And then there was the hula girl. This costume was from McCalls 2795, which is a great simple pattern for six different costumes. I'm so glad wee changed from the ladybug costume we had originally picked out to this one. It was so her! Once we talked her out of wearing her flip-flops, she had a blast running from house to house telling everyone she was a hula girl and beaming when they told her she looked pretty.

There may be a little downtime and a glitch here and there, but by the time the holiday is over, things will be looking mighty mighty spiffy around here and in the shop. You may not even recognize the place! So until then, happy Canada Day, happy 4th of July, and happy anniversary to us! Posted by Caro on June 29, 2009

SHEEP ON STATION We raise white faced sheep. The sheep produce lambs and wool. We keep some of the ewe lambs, others go to summer camp. We sell the wool, or spin it into yarn. We use the yarn to knit many things, especially socks. We knit socks on a Circular Sock Knitting Machine (CSM). We are also involved in helping others use these machines. The Circular Sock Knitting Machine (CSM) can be used to make other items such as mittens, scarves, hats, gloves, dolls and toys to name a few. Visit our site and see a few examples of these items. You may also want to visit some of our self study areas. Over the years and finding many old machines with various literature attached we have developed a strong understanding of some peaple involved with the Circular Knitter in years past. We have developed through research a historical novel about one man, Alvous, who had impact on the industry following WW I in the 1920s. Visit the HOME SPUN STORIES section.

By Denise, on October 29th, 2010 I was working on reading with Julian my 8 year old and this was in the lesson. It is interactive and you can click on the words so they are read to you. Guess which one he kept hitting twice. I don’t know who came up with the combination of sight words for this lesson, but hey, it gave my 8 year old unwilling reader a little motivation. And gave us all a little laugh! Leave a comment Kids homeschooling

Pocket Spinner! Plus a New Adoption
    • Jan. 4th, 2009 at 10:17 AM

My Pocket Wheel finally arrived - and I picked it up yesterday. It's so little! The opening of basket to the right of the wheel measures at 10", and the measurement from orifice metal opening to where the pocket wheel sits is 18". I'm already on my second bobbin. Fun!
Then guess what followed me home? Big Bertha! You can't quite tell that it's BIG, but to give you an idea, the trim on the wall is at 36", and the floor-to-top-of-wheel measures 45".
And for entertainment's sake, see the two together!
