Komodo Dragon (Monitor)
Scientific Name: Varanus komodoensis
Fast Fact:
Komodos have good eyesight during the day and can even see in color, but they mostly use their excellent sense of smell to find their prey. They also have very thick skin, and this helps protect them from fights with each other and from the thick jungle vegetation of their home. STATUS: Komodo Island is protected as a wildlife preserve by the country of Indonesia, which provides safety from habitat encroachment by humans. However, komodos are listed as vulnerable because they occur naturally in such a small area of the world. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums has set up a Species Survival Plan to manage the breeding of captive komodos and protect the species for the future in case something were to happen to the wild population. HABITAT: DIET: PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: A fully-grown komodo dragon can be nine or ten feet long and can weigh 200 pounds or more. Males are slightly larger than females and sometimes have yellow spots on their snouts, but are otherwise grey. Each of their four feet have five short, curved claws that are used to catch and hold onto their prey. Juvenile komodos use their claws to live in trees until they are fully-grown and able to protect themselves from other adult komodos on the ground.

Predators and Prey Komodo Dragon have no enemies. They are the strongest lizards in the world alive today. It will attack anything edible that moves. Komodos will even attack each other. They first give out a warning by arching their neck and puffing their throat out. They then pin each other down. They will use their tail to defend themselves too. It will also use its teeth, claws, and third eye. Young monitors are well adapted to their arboreal life where their coloration is a useful camouflage. Their slender body, long tail, and sharp claws help them to defend themselves from other animals. Komodo Dragons have 60 teeth that are shed and replaced much like shark teeth. The teeth are flattened and rigid so that they can tear their food up into shreds. Komodo Dragons often ambush their prey by hiding along game trails. A Komodo Dragon then pins its prey to the ground and bites. If the animal escapes it will die of the bacteria in the saliva. Komodos also use their claws to defend themselves from bigger Komodo Dragons. They also use their claws to grab and rip their prey. Komodo Dragons eat the eggs of other lizards, mice, deer, wild pig, other lizards, and huge water buffaloes. Komodos are also known to kill people in the jungle when they are asleep. Komodos do not like to eat humans but they will attack and kill them. I found out that Komodo Dragons are on the top of of the reptile food chain. They are dangerous reptiles that can kill anything. So if you are in Indonesia BEWARE!

News Flash! ISCI Komodos Train!
For those of you not at JIS last night, you missed an actual training session! Yes indeed, tackle pads and cones were used, coach McCarthy barked out instructions and the team worked on building continuity and communication. It may be a bit late in the day, but I think everyone involved was happy we trained with structure.
See you all Saturday

Komodo Dragon American Alligator American Crocodile Asian Elephant Bald Eagle ... Grizzly Bear Komodo Dragon Lemurs Manatee Ocelot/Lynx Orangutan ... Panda What animal will tear a hole in you if it's disturbed? The komodo dragon. This beast will eat anything from birds and rodents, to deer, wild boar and water buffalo including humans! Like many lizards, the komodo dragon uses its tongue to smell and can detect carrion from 5 miles away! The komodos lay up to 30 eggs and the incubation period is 7 months. The komodo dragon's babies live in trees until they are mature. Larger komodos rest in under ground burrows. The powerful komodo has no enemies except for man. These monsters can grow to a whopping 10 feet long and can weigh a killer 365 pounds. These killers live a long life of 50 years. Did you know that the komodo dragon can be found in 7 different countries? Also there are only 3,000 komodos left in the world. The giant komodo dragon is the smartest of all reptiles in the world. The komodo dragon was only discovered in 1912. An adult komodo will eat an entire deer at one time - then sleep for a week digesting it. Young komodos hatch from their leathery, goose sized eggs fully formed. The cause of the komodos being endangered is mainly because of habitat destruction. Another reason is that some farmers shoot komodos to protect their livestock. In order to help the komodos there are now parks with komodos on them and the parks allow tourists to watch the great komodo dragons.

komodoensis Description of Species: In Indonesia there is a type of lizard that can reach sizes that you may have thought only existed in fairy tales. These unique reptiles have been able to develop in an area where there is little for large animals to live on. They were there long before humans but like many organisms around the world they are subject to the growing human populations. These monitor lizards are known as Komodo dragons. The Komodo dragon, also known as Varanus komodoensis , may reach lengths of up to three meters and may weigh as much as 500 pounds. They have claws that may be as long as ten centimeters, teeth that operate like little scalpels and saliva that contains a deadly bacteria, staphylococcus (Cherrington, 1997). These monitors are known to be strong swimmers and may dive down to depths of 15 feet. Most importantly they possess great intelligence, displayed best when they hunt or search out their next meal. Habitat: Natural History: Komodo dragons are one of the largest carnivorous reptiles. These large lizards start out as hatchlings only a foot long. Young dragons live in the trees for protection from larger predators and adult Komodo monitors. Their diets consist of insects and small lizards. When they reach adolescence their diets may consist of rodents, birds, and large mammals occasionally. Adult Komodo dragons can take down large animals fifteen times their size, like water buffalo (

Quick-read this article:
Komodo dragons are the largest lizards on earth today. There is evidence from fossils that lizards in the group to which komodos belong were even larger in the past. But there is no evidence that they ever evolved from non-reptiles. Fearsome-looking komodo dragons live on only four islands in the world. All four islands are among the 13,670 islands that make up the Republic of Indonesia in South-East Asia. Many historians think the well-known depictions of legendary Chinese dragons were modelled on creatures like the Komodo dragon. The Komodo's long, forked, yellow-orange tongue flicks out of its mouth like wisps of fire. Komodos are the largest lizards living today. They can grow to three meters (10 feet) long, although the biggest and most savage-looking specimens were slaughtered before the Indonesian Government set up its current protection policy. Komodos are a species of monitor lizard. Monitors include the Australian goanna, which is a lizard similar to the Komodo dragon but which rarely reaches lengths of more than two meters (six feet). Many creatures that lived in the environment before Noah's Flood seemed to reach huge sizes. Fossils of gigantic monitors have been discovered that show that today's isolated colonies have come from much larger and more wide-ranging monitors of earlier times.
