So What is This About?

Maria had been traveling through Southern Africa for four months, and Erin had been living in China for ten months. We chatted until the bus movie came on, which I must say, must have been the finest example of cinematic greatness ever produced. "Curse of the Komodos" was every bit as exciting as the title implies. In fact, if it wasn't for the awful plot, terrible acting, plastic like komodo dragons and bizarre pseudo nudity scene, I would have it nominated it for an Oscar! Bravo, killer dragons, bravo.
When we arrived in Chiang Mai at 6am, the bus dropped us off outside of the city center where several Songthaeos were waiting to pick us up (a Songtaeos is a small pickup truck with two benches in the berth, each at one side of the truck seating several people)

Komodo Dragon Varanus komodoensis)
Classification and Range Komodo dragons are also known as Komodo monitors, or by the local Indonesian name, "ora." These giant lizards belong to the family Varanidae, which includes 52 species of monitor lizards. All varanids belong to a single genus. Varanus includes very tiny lizards only a few inches long to the immense Komodo dragon. Komodo dragons live on four southeastern Indonesian islands in the Lesser Sunda region: Flores, Gili Motang, Komodo and Rinca. As recent as the 1970s, their habitat also included the island of Padar. Habitat Komodo dragons inhabit hot, seasonally arid grasslands, savannas and monsoon forests. They live mostly in the lowlands, but have occasionally been found at elevations up to 1,967 feet (600 m).

However, recent research suggests that the large size of komodo dragons may be better understood as representative of a relic population of very large varanid lizards that once lived across Indonesia and Australia, most of which, along with other megafauna, died out after contact with modern humans. Komodo dragons are the world's largest lizards. They live on the islands of Komodo, Rinca and other tiny surrounding islands, and on the westernmost part of Flores Island in Indonesia. Komodo is west of Flores, east of Sumbawa, and north of Sumba.
If you are an ordinary person, you can only reach Komodo by boat. If you are a wealthy celebrity, you might be able to get permission to fly there in a helicopter and use the helicopter pad that was constructed especially for President Suharto.
Komodo and Rinca are odd islands. They are dry, hot, and relatively barren compared to the lush and jungly islands to the east and west of them in the Nusa Tenggara island chain. As you approach from a distance, you see Komodo as a low, hilly island. As you get closer, you can see the barren, rocky terrain of Komodo. Here is a close-up view of the dock at Rinca. Both Komodo and Rinca belong to a National Park system designed to protect and preserve the endangered Komodo Dragon.

Komodo Dragon
Did you know that komodo dragons is not a dragon? It is true. Komodo dragons live in Indonesia Komodo Island. They live in very dry savannah areas. The komodo dragon is ten feet long and weighs up to 300 pounds. They are on the scaly side . Komodo dragons have strong claws and saw-like teeth. The komodo dragon is a relative of the monitor lizard. Do you know that komodo dragons are endangered species? One reason is because people use them to make hand bags, purses, and exotic meals. Sport hunters use them as trophies. People use their skin and feet to make novelties. Komodo dragons are also endangered because they are trapped for sale to zoos. Komodo dragons are also trapped and sold to private collectors. They also die of storms, fires, and diseases. by Melissa M. and Tah C.
