Komodo and its Dragons (1/3)
Several years ago, I read a book called "Last Chance to See", written by Douglas Adams (famous for writing "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"). Among several other animals on the endangered species list, he also wrote about the Komodo Dragons the world's largest Lizards. Ever since that day I've wanted to visit Komodo. Sunset in Sape. Douglas Adams has unfortunately passed away several months before I visited Komodo. I am thankful to him for writing this book, as Komodo was one of the most interesting places I have ever visited. By inspiring people like me to visit Komodo, the locals are finding out that the dragons are worth more alive than dead. This way he might have done a lot to help save the Komodo Dragons. Like most tourists we entered Indonesia in Bali. Getting from Bali to Komodo was anything but trivial. There was the option to take an organized tour by boat, but we would only have had 3 hours on Komodo while we wanted to spend several days. After taking several busses and ferries, which took us 3 days in part because one of our busses broke down, we arrived in Sape on the eastern end of Sumbawa on Monday the 6th of August 2001.

Check out my new website Dragons in Art and on the Web What is the Komodo? Growing up to ten feet long, it is the largest lizard in the world. Discovered by science at the start of the 20th century, some 6,000 Komodos are restricted to a few small islands in Indonesia. On these islands, they rule supreme. Then can run as fast as a dog for short stretches and prey they merely injure are brought down shortly by the deadly bacteria in their mouths. They spend their days sunning and their nights in shallow burrows. Categories: The categories overlap quite a bit. Rather than repeating entries I have generally put them in the category that fits them best. This is often a judgement call. For example, some of the best general information is found in the "Zoos with Komodos" page. Questions, site suggestions and comments

Introduction to the works of G.E. Patrick Collins, including works concerning trips to the Indonesian Archipelago.
http://komodo.procombel.be
Read about Pat Collins, who roamed the Indonesian seas on a self-built prahu and wrote about the Komodo Dragons in a sensational posthumous manuscript . You'll find numerous descriptions of islands, boats, peoples (fishermen, hunters, farmers...), their traditions and beliefs, in three books published
in the mid-thirties. A fourth manuscript tells of his discovery of the island of Komodo and its legendary giant lizards, at a time (1937) when they were still mysterious dragons.
