Korea is home to one of the oldest continuous civilizations in the world. The earliest known Korean pottery dates to around 8000 BC, and the Neolithic period began before 6000 BC, followed by the Stone Age around 2500 BC. According to the Samguk Yusa and other Korean medieval-era records, the Gojoseon (Old Joseon) kingdom was founded in 2333 BC in basins of Liao river eventually stretching from the peninsula to much of Manchuria.

Korean appreciation for Suseok, began around 100 BC - 1300 AD, when these stones were first introduced from China with Taoism. The preferred styles were upright stones that contained perforations and grooves on their surface, and preference continued during the middle period of Korean history from 1300-1950. As in Japan, Korean cultural changes during this time caused collectors to turn toward more "subdued" specimens. Suseok collecting increased after the Korean war (1950-1953), but the recent closing of many prime collecting areas has seen a decrease in the number of collectors. Unlike the Japanese stones that are sometimes cut or altered, Koreans do not allow any alteration to their Suseok, preferring to retain the purity of their stones. Rather than cutting uneven stones for a flat bottom, these stones are displayed in deep suiban (ceramic containers filled with sand or water) or a more deeply carved daezwa or zwadae (carved wood display stands) to hide more of the stone. These Korean stands are unique and compliment the stone with their phenomenal flowing lines that merge into the feet of the stand, making Korean Suseok a beautiful and distinct form of this art of stone appreciation. Following is a list of some collecting sites in Korea that are especially well-known or famous with suseok collectors.

Korean History - The Three Kingdoms
Korean History is amongst the longest in the world, dating back to pre-historic times. We will now focus on the period following the first states established on the Korean peninsula. In the areas of the slave owning Kingdoms, many feudal powers emerged out of which the strongest dominated. The strongest kingdoms were The Three Kingdoms; Koguryo (Goguryeo), Paekje (Baekje) and Silla. Koguryo (Goguryeo) was the first to be established as well as the largest and most powerful. Founded in 37 BC, it was the first kingdom in Korea to embrace Buddhism as the state religion in the 4th century AD. Koguryo was at its peak in the 5th century when it had expanded to most of Manchuria, parts of Inner Mongolia and extended all the way south of the Korean peninsula, substantially reducing the territories of the other two Korean kingdoms. In 598 Koguryo defeated large troops of invading Chinese troops in the Koguryo-Sui war. Repeated wars with China eventually weakened Koguryo and it fell in 668 after allied Tang Chinese and Silla forces took over. Above: Image of the Three Kingdoms in the 5th century. http://koreanhistoryproject.org/
Site Map The Korean History Project went online October 16, 1997, as an educational effort to research, produce and publish Korean and East Asian history online, to promote history education and cultural understanding, and to make a valuable history resource easily accessible to a worldwide audience. Korea in the Eye of the Tiger , the feature presentation, is a full-length book that tells the sweeping saga of East Asian history and the complex relationships among Korea, China, Manchuria, Mongolia, Russia, Japan, Europe, and the United States in their quest for power and influence in Asia. Journey to Asia , a companion feature, is your guide to learning about the geography, weather, languages, and governments of Korea, China, Japan, Mongolia, and Russia. Advanced communication technologies now make it possible to experience significant historic events as they happen around the world from virtually anywhere. People cannot understand this rush of global information unless they know something about where it is happening, the people to whom it is happening, and the culture within which it is happening. They cannot understand the context of world events if their only basis for making judgements is a limited knowledge of their small corner of the world. The growing influence of Asian culture and the accelerating economic power of the Asian Pacific Rim make it vital to understand the rich history of that part of the world, to learn where nations of the Far East have been and where they may be heading.

Korea's History/Background The history of human activity in Korea can be traced far into the Paleolithic period, about 500,000 years ago. The beginning of Korean history is often dated to 2333 B.C. when King Tan-gun, a legendary figure born of the son of Heaven and a woman from a bear-totem tribe, established the first kingdom named Choson, literally meaning the "Land of the Morning Calm." While the historicity of the Tan-gun myth is disputed among scholars, it is known that ancient Korea was characterized by clan communities which combined to form small town-states. They rose and fell so that by the first century B.C., Three Kingdoms, Koguryo (37 B.C. - A.D. 688), Paekche (18 B.C. - A.D. 660) and Shilla (57 B.C. - A.D. 935), had emerged on the Korean Peninsula and part of what is now known as Manchuria.

Almost no centralized communities existed from then until three kingdoms emerged in the 1st century BC.
    57 B.C. - 668 A.D.:
The Three Kingdoms of Silla Goguryeo , and Baekje had similar ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Koguryo occupied the northern part of the peninsula from the Chinese border to the Han River, while Silla and Baekche dominated the southern regions. All three kingdoms were heavily influenced by China, and Buddhism was introduced to Koguryo in 372. Various alliances were formed either with or against the Chinese until 660 when Silla allied with China to overthrow Baekje. Goguryeo fell shortly afterwards in 668.
The Silla Kingdom period marked the start of Korea's cultural development. Buddhism expanded and furled the construction of numerous temples and art works. However, despite Chinese influences, Silla remained largely tribal in culture. Society divided into distinct classes with a large semi-slave population supporting an aristocratic minority. Warlords began amassing power bases to the north and eventually took over Silla and founded a new kingdom-

      Introduction
T his bibliography covers many features of Korean history. The subjects include not only political, diplomatic, and economic history, but also historical linguistics, art history, literature, philosophy and religion, and overseas Koreans, for example. Chronologically, coverage concludes in the 1960s. For studies of South Korea's politics and economy, 1961 is the stopping point; for South Korean foreign relations, coverage continues through the 1965 treaty with Japan and the Vietnam War. Coverage of North Korea continues into the late 1960s. I have not sought to compile a comprehensive list for each subject. Rather, I have provided publications that have appeared since the publication in 1980 of the annotated bibliography Studies on Korea: A Scholar's Guide and recent publications not cited in that work. This bibliography, then, is both an updating of and a supplement to that venerable reference.

North Korea Braces for Lil' Kim's Debut Sep 28, 2010

Most North Korea watchers expect "Dear Leader" Kim Jong Il to use the event with all the attendant hoopla, including, according to a South Korean group, "the largest military parade" in North Korean history to formally position his third son, Kim Jong Un, as his heir apparent. They believe Kim took a surprise visit to China in late August for the express purpose of solidifying his dynastic intent, in effect informing Beijing of his plan. (Time.com)

Korean writing systems (4th century a.d.), architecture, political systems, religions, and even musical instruments came from China. Koreans adapted these Chinese things and made them their own. Chinese scholars had devised a kind of printing system using carved wooden blocks. Koreans took this invention one step further and created the first world's first metal moveable type in the 12th century. Adaptation of foreign things for their own use is a historical characteristic of Korean culture, even today.

Korea Travel Guide - Korea History Korea claims a year history, dating from the country's foundation by Tangun. Its history is full of foreign invaders and various factions vying for power. Korean history is broken down into the following periods:
    Three Kingdoms (57 B.C. - A.D. 668)
    Silla
    Goryeo
    Joseon
    Japanese Occupation
    Republic of Korea
    (1945 - present)
South Korea came into being after World War II, the result of a 1945 agreement reached by the Allies at the Potsdam Conference, making the 38th parallel the boundary between a northern zone of the Korean peninsula to be occupied by the USSR and southern zone to be controlled by U.S. forces. (For details, see Korea, North) Elections were held in the U.S. zone in 1948 for a National Assembly, which adopted a republican constitution and elected Syngman Rhee as the nation's president. The new republic was proclaimed on Aug. 15 and was recognized as the legal government of Korea by the UN on Dec. 12, 1948. On June 25, 1950, North Korean Communist forces launched a massive surprise attack on South Korea, quickly overrunning the capital, Seoul. U.S. armed intervention was ordered on June 27 by President Harry S. Truman, and on the same day the UN invoked military sanctions against North Korea. Gen. Douglas MacArthur was named commander of the UN forces. U.S. and South Korean troops fought a heroic holding action, but by the first week of August they were forced back to a 4,000-square-mile beachhead in southeast Korea. There they stood off superior North Korean forces until Sept. 15, when a major UN amphibious assault was launched deep behind Communist lines at Inchon, the port of Seoul.
