ADVERTISING INFORMATION Kuwait - Culture Islam is the official religion of Kuwait and is practiced throughout the country. Islam forbids the consumption of pork or alcohol and these items are illegal in Kuwait There are also churches of varying denominations for Christian residents. The official language is Arabic though English is widely used especially in business, banking and big shopping centres. Most street signs are written in both languages. There are essentially five levels of Kuwaiti society: the ruling family, the old Kuwaiti merchant families, former Bedouins who settled in Kuwait, Arabs from other countries and foreigners. Arabic is the official language and 90% of the population is Muslim. In per-capita terms, Kuwait has one of the highest incomes in the world. Before the Kuwaiti invasion in August 1990, less than 40% of the population was Kuwaiti and of the work force, less than 20% were Kuwaiti. Non-Kuwaitis enjoyed most of the welfare benefits of Kuwaiti citizens. The vote, on the other hand, was restricted to about 65,000 Kuwaiti males descended from men living in the country before 1920. It is inevitable in a country like Kuwait, which has grown from relative poverty to great wealth in a very short time that clashes should occur between the old and the new. It cannot be emphasized too strongly that the most important part of Kuwaiti society remains the family, and here the old values are retained and cherished.

The concept of face has the same meaning as respect and reputation in the west, except the face has intensity about it that is almost inconceivable to a westerner. Face is expressed through hospitality, generosity and loyalty to family or particular group. A Kuwaiti spends his life building his personal and social face and the sense of face lies behind many social behaviors in Kuwait.

Most Kuwaitis men wear a dishdasha, a floor length robe with a center robe opening which is but on over the head. Because it is so well suited to the climate, this basic garment has changed little in the last few hundred years, though the collar, front button fastening and buttoned cuffs are 20th century innovations introduction by Indian tailor . Provided he is not corpulent, the dishdasha can at time make the wearer look quit elegant.

Kuwaitis are well known for their hospitality and generosity. So expect to be treated well when visiting Kuwait. Greeting
Kuwaitis show their affection by their unique daily greeting, which is comprised of a hand shake and a kiss or two on the cheek. The greeting also includes a series of questions asking about ones health, family and so on. Being one of the few cultures still holding tight to religion and tradition, men and women who are not related to one another are usually segregated, and it is culturally not acceptable for them to kiss on the cheek Religion A Mosque in Kuwait-Photo from Flickr-Psycho Milt Kuwait is predominantly an Islamic country where over 80 percent of the total population and 95 percent of Kuwaitis practice the religion . There are mosques in every town and city. Mosques are the Muslims' place of worship where people visit every day to do their five daily prayers as a united group. Every day when the sun rises, around noon, in the afternoon, at sun set and at night, the prayers are called in every mosque in Kuwait. It is just breathtaking to listen to the prayer, which basically reminds all Muslims that it is time to pray. Click here for a clip of a prayer being called. Below is the translation obtained from

Kuwaitis traditionally greet each other by shaking hands and kissing cheeks. However, men and women do not exchange more than a possible handshake to greet each other in respect unless the man and the woman are related to one another. It is also customary for people greeting each other to ask a long series of questions concerning one's health, that of their relatives, their jobs, etc., such as asking how good they are feeling in order to relax the other person and give a sense of intimacy. Usually, elders are greeted first as a sign of respect.

Identification. Modern day Kuwaitis are the descendants of several nomadic tribes and clans who ultimately settled on the coast of the Arabian Gulf during the eighteenth century to avoid the persistent drought of the desert. When they arrived at the coast, the clans built forts to protect themselves from other nomadic tribes who still traversed the desert. The name Kuwait is derived from kut, Location and Geography. Kuwait is a small country located in the Middle East on the Persian Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia. It is a desert country with intensely hot summers and short, cool winters. The terrain varies minimally, between flat and slightly undulating desert plains. Demography.
