Experience Kuwait culture through available jobs in Kuwait. View Kuwait photos, read about the culture, and see if it is right for you! I fell in love with Kuwait culture...a 2 liter of H2O, keys melting in my car, toes burning at 7:00 a.m. on the beach. It was fantastic! Learn Arabic with MemoryLifter! It is a lovely country - my experience was not at all what you see on the nightly news! Read about Kuwait culture, view some of my personal photos, and perhaps you may want to locate jobs in Kuwait!
A Bit of History and Geography of Kuwait
Kuwait is a small country that nestles on the northwestern corner of the Arabian Gulf. Kuwait is a little bigger than Connecticut, but a bit smaller than New Jersey. It is a wonderful blend of modern amenities and old-world charm. As an expat, I felt right at home whilst living there. The name Kuwait is translated to mean "little fort." This name comes from its' history of constant threat of attacks from the Turks, the Ikhwan and the Wahabbi tribesmen.

Facts and Statistics Location: Middle East, bordering the Persian Gulf, between Iraq and Saudi Arabia Capital: Kuwait City Population: 2,257,549 including 1,291,354 non-nationals (July 2004 est.) Ethnic Make-up: Kuwaiti 45%, other Arab 35%, South Asian 9%, Iranian 4%, other 7% Religions: Muslim 85% (Sunni 70%, Shi'a 30%), Christian, Hindu, Parsi, and other 15% Language in Kuwait Arabic is the official language of Kuwait, but English is widely spoken. It is used in business and is a compulsory second language in schools. Among the non-Kuwaiti population, many people speak Farsi, the official language of Iran, or Urdu, the official language of Pakistan. Arabic is spoken by almost 200 million people in more than 22 countries. It is the language of the Qur'an, the Holy Book of Islam, and of Arab poetry and literature. While spoken Arabic varies from country to country, classical Arabic has remained unchanged for centuries. In Kuwait, there are differences between the dialects spoken in urban areas and those spoken in rural areas. Islam Islam is practised by the majority of Kuwaitis and governs their personal, political, economic and legal lives. Islam emanated from what is today Saudi Arabia. The Prophet Muhammad is seen as the last of God's emissaries (following in the footsteps of Jesus, Moses, Abraham, etc) to bring revelation to mankind. He was distinguished with bringing a message for the whole of mankind, rather than just to a certain peoples. As Moses brought the Torah and Jesus the Bible, Muhammad brought the last book, the Quran. The Quran and the actions of the Prophet (the Sunnah) are used as the basis for all guidance in the religion.

Kuwait Culture
The influence of Islamic and Arab culture on its architecture, music, attire, cuisine and lifestyle is prominent as well. The most distinctive characteristic of local Kuwaiti culture are the dewaniya's, a large reception room used for social gatherings attended mostly by close family members. While, unlike neighboring Saudi Arabia, the Islamic dress code is not compulsory, many of the older Kuwaiti men prefer wearing dish dasha, an ankle-length white shirt woven from wool or cotton while the minority of women wear abaya, black over-garment covering most parts of the body. This attire is particularly well-suited for Kuwait's hot and dry climate. Western-style clothing is also fairly popular, especially among Kuwait's youth. Seafood has been the mainstay of the Kuwaiti diet for centuries. The Arabs in the Persian Gulf region played a crucial role in the spice trade between India and Europe and spices have remained an important ingredient of Kuwaiti cuisine. Traditional Kuwaiti cuisine includes Machboos or Kabsa which borrows heavily from South Asian cuisine. As in other Persian Gulf states, Kuwait takes part in the tradition of Qarqe'an during the month of Ramadan.

Kuwait culture and heritage features a strong Islamic influence. Islam is the religion followed by majority of the population of Kuwait. There are only a few Christian Kuwaitis. Kuwait culture and heritage are also reflected through its art, literature, music, dance, theater and films. Some of the inherent features of the Kuwaiti culture are the Bedouin traditions, Al Sadu weaving and the Diwaniya (meeting place of men where various issues are discussed besides entertainment). The visual art of Kuwait is promoted by some organizations such as ‘The Kuwaiti Society of Formative Artists’, ‘The National Council of Culture, Arts and Literature (NCCAL)’ and ‘The Free Art Studio’. The city abounds in various historical monuments, mosques and museum. To understand the architecture that is 150 years old, one must see the Dickson House, Bayt-Al-Bader or the Sadu House. Most of the houses possess a central courtyard with several rooms surrounding it. The architecture of these buildings that is a fusion of modern and traditional style provides a deep insight into the culture of Kuwait. Liberation Tower of Kuwait breathes a contemporary architectural style. Kuwaiti literature is based on ancient folklore. Different folklore songs are sung during public and private occasions. Higher Institute for Theatrical Arts has been playing a great role in the promotion of Kuwaiti theater. The Kuwaiti Theater, Gulf Theatre and the Popular Theatre companies have earned wide appreciation. The weddings in Kuwait are observed with Ardah dance performed by the men folk. During social gatherings, the women perform dances like Khamari, Samiri, Tanboura, Al Zifan and Fraisah. Some of the musical instruments of Kuwait are Rubabah, Al-tanbarah, Oud, Al-habban and Al-mirwas.

Kuwait : Culture
In 1993 Kuwait's population was highly educated, both in comparison to other states in the region and in comparison to its pre-oil education levels. The impressive education system was brought about by a conscious government decision, made possible by revenues from oil that began in the 1950s, to invest heavily in human resources. The education system has its problems, however. For example, it relies heavily on foreign teachers. In the late 1950s, almost 90 % were non-Kuwaitis. contempt a long-standing government effort to indigenize education, the system continues to rely heavily on foreigners. The system also often fails to train graduates in fields that correspond to Kuwait's most pressing labor needs. particularly in higher education, the system produces many graduates with training in liberal arts and few with training in vocational subjects.
