    Kwanzaa: Soul Food Celebration
Kwanzaa, celebrated by some African Americans, is a holiday which has gained in popularity in recent years. It came out of the ‘60s cultural revolution that set off an interest in African history, music, art and a growing sense of black consciousness. Kwanzaa, which means "first fruits of the harvest," is celebrated for seven days from December 26 through January 1. It is a cultural, rather than religious, holiday. Each day is celebrated, generally by a gathering of family and friends. Participants discuss and commit to seven guiding principles, one each day. A candle is lighted each day. The first day starts with a black candle–it represents African American people in unity. The next six days alternate between lighting a red candle, representing struggle, and a green candle, representing a "green future." A feast is held on December 31 for sharing, remembering, reassessing and rejoicing. ~Bev Whitfield and Kathleen Wilson Traditional Kwanzaa feast

Thanksgiving Cooking with Kids
Kids love to help in the kitchen! And Thanksgiving is no exception little ones are automatically drawn to the hustle and bustle going on during this holiday. How to keep them happy and occupied? Let them help! There are many ways you can involve your kids in the creation of a Thanksgiving feast.
One easy thing that kids can do involves deviled eggs. Put your deviled egg filling into a pastry bag, or make your own using a Ziploc bag with a small cut in one corner. Let your little ones squeeze the filling into each empty egg half, then have them garnish the eggs with a light sprinkle of paprika.
Another easy thing that your kids can do is help with the mixing of various dishes. Let them mash the potatoes with an old-fashioned potato masher, and supervise while they gently stir in butter, salt and pepper. Allow them to add the broth, eggs and seasonings to your stuffing and blend together.

Many local centers need donations of food items and/or volunteers to help gather, serve, drive and other jobs as needed. Food items generally need to be non-perishable: canned goods, stuffing and/or mashed potato mix, cranberry sauce, cereal, etc. Some places will gladly accept monetary donations to buy larger or perishable items to distribute. WRITING: The children used the Bailey's Book House computer program, from Scholastic, to write Christmas cards. After they printed them out in poster form, they glued the card on a piece of construction paper and decorate the outside. MUSIC: We sang a wide variety of Christmas carols all month long. Then the children sang some of them during our Christmas Party. Christmas music was playing at all times this month. So, the children learned the words to a lot of interesting songs. ART: The children decorated the whole tree with hand made decorations. The made reindeer out of Popsicle sticks. The children layered pretzels in a circle to make a very fragile Christmas wreath. Then they weaved ribbon through it and tied it in a bow. Finally we covered balls with small shapes of tissue paper. They painted the glass balls with glue and then layered the paper on. The different colors show up best when using lighter colored balls like silver. I filled the table with colored pasta. Then the children used yarn to string the pieces together. This formed the garland for our tree.

    Lovin' Spoonbread
It used to be that if you wanted to savor spoonbread, you had to head uptown to Harlem ( Miss Mamie's Spoonbread Too and its spinoff, Miss Maude's , are sure bets) or down to Kentucky or Virginia, where they hold festivals complete with banjo-picking and spoonbread-eating contests the way we have street fairs. Well, maybe it's anti-Atkins backlash, but whatever the reason, chefs are gussying up the humble cornmeal side dish and serving it all over town: At Guastavino's , Daniel Orr seasons it with sage and goat cheese and serves it alongside his Thursday-night special, Texas beef brisket; downtown at
