Pottery has documented the lives and cultures of people all over the world for thousands of years. While clay bowls and other vessels served a practical purpose, the craftsmen who made them recorded events and expressed ideas by decorating the surfaces with designs, symbols and drawings called pictographs. Archaeologists can learn a great deal about ancient peoples by studying their pottery and these designs.
You may not have clay or a kiln in which to bake finished pieces, but we can make something that looks like pottery using the papier mache technique, a craft in which layers of paper are pasted together to make a form. In this activity, we'll create a bowl and invent our own pictographs to use as surface decoration. By recycling newspapers and bags as art materials, we can help save natural resources and landfill space.

Kwanzaa Crafts for Kids to Do
By Shelley Frost eHow Contributor updated: April 15, 2010 I want to do this! What's This?
  • Kwanzaa honors African heritage with a seven-day celebration from December 26 to January 1 each year. Seven principles guide the Kwanzaa celebration: unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. The lighting of the kinara candles is a key component of the Kwanzaa celebration. Red, green and black are the colors associated with the holiday.
  • Kinara
  • On each of the seven days, another candle on the kinara is lit, to represent the principles of Kwanzaa. Let kids make their own kinara, using empty toilet paper tubes to represent the seven candles. Paint three of the candles red, three green and the final candle black. You also can cover the tubes with construction paper. Glue the candles onto a piece of cardboard, with the three red candles on the left, the black candle in the middle and the three green candles on the right. On each day of Kwanzaa, add a tissue paper flame to the corresponding candle. The order for lighting the candles is black, outermost red, outermost green, middle red, middle green, innermost red and innermost green.
