< BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS In 1876 Russian troops defeated the Quqon Khanate and occupied northern Kyrgyzstan. Within five years, all Kyrgyzstan had become part of the Russian Empire, and the Kyrgyz slowly began to integrate themselves into the economic and political life of Russia. In the last decades of the nineteenth century, increasing numbers of Russian and Ukrainian settlers moved into the northern part of present-day Kyrgyzstan. Russian specialists began large-scale housing, mining, and road construction projects and the construction of schools. In the first years of the twentieth century, the presence of the Russians made possible the publication of the first books in the Kyrgyz language; the first Kyrgyz reader was published in Russia in 1911. Nevertheless, Russian policy did not aim at educating the population; most Kyrgyz remained illiterate, and in most regions traditional life continued largely as it had before 1870. By 1915, however, even many Central Asians outside the intelligentsia had recognized the negative effects of the Russian Empire's repressive policies. The Kyrgyz nomads suffered especially from confiscation of their land for Russian and Ukrainian settlements. Russian taxation, forced labor, and price policies all targeted the indigenous population and raised discontent and regional tension. The Kyrgyz in Semirech'ye Province suffered especially from land appropriation. The bloody rebellion of the summer of 1916 began in Uzbekistan, then spread into Kyrgyzstan and elsewhere. Kazaks, Turkmen, Uzbeks, and Kyrgyz participated. An estimated 2,000 Slavic settlers and even more local people were killed, and the harsh Russian reprisals drove one-third of the Kyrgyz population into China.

According to recent findings of Kyrgyz and Chinese historians, Kyrgyz history dates back to 201 B.C. The earliest descendents of the Kyrgyz people, who are believed to be of Turkic descent, lived in the northeastern part of current Mongolia. Later, some of their tribes migrated to the region that is currently southern Siberia and settled along the Yenisey River, where they lived from the 6th until the 8th centuries. They spread across what is now the Tuva region of the Russian Federation, remaining in that area until the rise of the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, when the Kyrgyz began migrating south. In the 12th century, Islam became the predominant religion in the region. Most Kyrgyz are Sunni Muslims of the Hanafi school.
During the 15th-16th centuries, the Kyrgyz people settled in the territory currently known as the Kyrgyz Republic. In the early 19th century, the southern territory of the Kyrgyz Republic came under the control of the Khanate of Kokand, and the territory was formally incorporated into the Russian Empire in 1876. The Russian takeover instigated numerous revolts against tsarist authority, and many Kyrgyz opted to move into the Pamir mountains or to Afghanistan. The suppression of the 1916 rebellion in Central Asia caused many Kyrgyz to migrate to China.

The territory of todays Kyrgyzstan has been conquered by many different people, lots of troups as those of Djingis Khan, crossed the region. The first people have been living here already thousands of years ago - the up to 5000-year-old stone inscriptions and the 3000-year-old town of Osh point at it. The nomadic people of the Kyrgyz is one of the oldest of Central Asia and first came here about 2000 years ago. They went south, coming from the Siberian region Yenisey and formed the Kyrgyz Khanate at the beginning of the first millennium. During the 6 th century, the Karakhanid Khanate was built up, composed of Turkic tribes. One of the most important cities was the town of Balasagun , of which today one still can visit the Burana-tower, only 1 hour drive from Bishkek. In the 13 th century, the empire was defeated by Djingis Khan, who then established the Mongol Khanate. After the death of the powerful emperor Mongke the Khanate was split up into many small ones, and the region of todays Kyrgyzstan was part of the Chagatai Khanate.

The earliest notable residents of what is now Kyrgyzstan were warrior tribes of Saka (also known as Scythians), from about the 6th century BC to the 5th century AD. Alexander the Great met perhaps the stiffest resistance from Saka tribes in his 4th century BC advance through Central Asia. Rich bronze and gold relics have been recovered from Scythian burial mounds at Lake Issyk-Kul and in southern Kazakhstan.
The region was under the control of various Turkic alliances from the 6th to 10th centuries, with a sizeable population living on the shores of Lake Issyk-Kul. Kyrgyzstan was the scene of a pivotal battle in 751, when the Turks and their Arab and Tibetan allies drove a large Tang Chinese army out of Central Asia.
k y r g y z s t a n Ancestors of today's Kyrgyz people probably lived in Siberia's upper Yenisey basin until at least the 10th century, when under the influence of Mongol incursions they began migrating south into the Tian Shan - more urgently with the rise of Jenghiz Khan in the 13th century. Present-day Kyrgyzstan was part of the inheritance of Jenghiz's second son, Chagatai.
Peace was shattered in 1685 by the arrival of the ruthless Mongol Oyrats of the Zhungarian Empire, who drove vast numbers of Kyrgyz south into present-day Tajikistan. When the Oyrats were defeated by the Manchu (Qing), the Kyrgyz became de facto subjects of the Chinese, who mainly left them to their nomadic ways. In the 18th century the feudal tentacles of the Kokand khanate began to encircle them, though the feisty Kyrgyz constantly made trouble from their Tian Shan redoubts. As the Russians moved closer in the 19th century, various Kyrgyz tribal leaders made their own peace with Russia or Kokand. Russian forces slowly rolled over the towns of Kokand, their advance culminating in the defeat of Tashkent in 1865. The Kyrgyz were gradually eased into the tsar's provinces of Ferghana and Semireche.

    History
Kyrgyzstan's mythical history begins more than 1000 years ago with its central epic hero, Manas. Some have hypothesized that Manas united the Kyrgyz tribes around the 9th century, with others pointing to the first mention of the Kyrgyz people in Chinese writings dated around the 2nd century BCE. Perhaps the name "Kyrgyz" is a shortened form of "kyrk kyz," which means forty women, representing forty Kyrgyz tribes. Archaeological study has found that various tribes known as the Scythians lived in the area until the 6th century, when Turkic groups moved into the area. Around the 10th century, the ancestors of the Kyrgyz people were pushed south from Siberia by the Mongols, who swept through the region periodically for the next few centuries until the Kokhand khanate (kingdom) based in modern-day Uzbekistan became the regional power. Meanwhile, most of the Kyrgyz people continued to live a nomadic lifestyle in the high mountains. Russian forces and settlers gained gradual control of the region through the late 19th and early 20th century, culminating in a Kyrgyz revolt against the Russians that was brutally suppressed. The formation of the Soviet Union led to the creation of a dependent state known as the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic, which was commonly referred to as Kirghizia.

Kyrgyzstan history has seen a lot many changes in the lives of the hardy and simple people of the land. The history of Kyrgyzstan is an exploration of the origin of the tough and proud Kirghiz character. This is the reason that history in Kyrgyzstan is still a living breathing reality rather than a dead uninteresting subject because the basic human traits which created and modified it is still very much a presence in Kirghiz life.
In the 1900s there was comprehensive Russian colonization and Russian colonists were yielded most of the very fertile agricultural land. The discontent of the masses, in 1916, saw a mutiny by the Kyrgyz people. In 1924 Kyrgyzstan became a dominion of the Soviet Federated Socialist Republic and was given autonomy as a republic in 1926. The USSR made Kyrgyzstan a constituent republic in 1936. Under the soviet rule the Kyrgyz let go of their pastoral culture, and modern industrial production and agricultural techniques were brought into their nomadic society.
On Aug. 31, 1991, Kyrgyzstan announced its independence from the Soviet Union and in December 1991, the country became a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The nation became a part of the IMF and the UN in 1992 and embraced an extreme economic reformation program. Referendum voters endorsed proposed constitutional and market reforms that allowed the economy to stand on its feet.

Formerly known as the Kara [black] Kyrgyz to distinguish them from the Kazakhs (at one time called Kirghiz or Kyrgyz), the Kyrgyz migrated to Kyrgyzstan from the region of the upper Yenisei, where they had lived from the 7th to the 17th cent. The area came under the rule of the Kokand In 1990, Askar Akayev, president of the republic's Academy of Sciences and a non-Communist, was elected president by the legislature. After fighting off an attempted coup in 1991, the government declared Kyrgyzstan independent of the Soviet Union. Kyrgyzstan subsequently became a member of the Russian-dominated Commonwealth of Independent States , and a new consitutution was approved. Bakiyev , a former prime minister who had resigned in 2002 and then opposed Akayev, was appointed prime minister and acting president. Despite the supreme court's annulment of the elections, the departing parliament decided to accept the results, and the new legislators took office. At the end of 2005, the political situation remained somewhat tenuous, with the president seeking to consolidate his power and influence despite his pledge to reduce his powers and parliament seeking to increase the prime minister's powers. Corruption and crime, meanwhile, had become worse than it had been under Akayev; reform efforts stalled; and by 2006 interethnic tensions and violence appeared to be increasing. Increased antiterror operations in S Kyrgyzstan, directed mainly against Uzbeks, appeared in part designed to suppress an Uzbek campaign for enlarged civil rights and aggravated ethnic strains.
