82. Geography Site: Lahars And Pyroclastic Flows
Explains the causes and effects of pyroclasitic flows.
http://www.geography-site.co.uk/pages/physical/earth/volcanoes/pyroclastic flows
d d d Lahars and Pyroclastic Flows Active volcanoes are known to be dangerous places. History gives plenty of examples of them causing mass destruction and loss of live, for example Vesuvius destroying Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79AD, Krakatoa exploding in 1883 and Mt St Helens in the Cascade Range (USA) erupting in 1980. The real killers are much more frightening. They can travel at over 100 miles per hour, move across land and sea, flow uphill as well as down, rip trees up by their roots, flatten buildings and kill people and animals instantly. These deadly processes are called pyroclastic flows and lahars. Pyroclastic Flows Pyroclastic flows are clouds of hot volcanic gases, ash and volcanic bombs that can sweep down the volcano's sides and other steep hills at speeds over 100 miles per hour. When a volcano erupts violently its common for large volumes of rock to be pulverised in the explosion and reduced to tiny particles. These are mixed with high temperature gasses, ash and larger pieces of rock, forming a red hot cloud that is very dense. Imagine a cloud of sand and air straight from a blast furnace, and you are getting close to what a pyroclastic flow looks and feels like. A pyroclastic has an added killer element; poisonous gasses at temperatures hot enough to burn your lungs away.

Lahar is an Indonesian word describing mudflows and debris flows that originate from the slopes of a volcano. Both types of flows contain a high concentration of rock debris to give them the internal strength necessary to transport hugh boulders as well as buildings and bridges and to exert extremely high impact forces against objects in their paths. Debris flows are coarser and less cohesive than mudflows . As lahars become dilute in downstream direction they become hyperconcentrated streamflows . Lacking internal strength, the mixture of rock debris and water takes on different flow properties. The coarser debris in this type of flow is no longer held in suspension by matrix strength and therefore settles to the bottom of the flow.

AROUND THE NATION; Mt. St. Helens Dam Holds Mud Off Cities, U.S. Says
AP Published: January 18, 1983 Mudflows could bury cities up to 40 miles away if a dam built by debris in a lake at the base of the Mount St. Helens volcano should burst, the Federal Emergency Management Agency said today. The report, prepared by the Geological Survey, is the first actually to plot on maps the areas that would be affected by mud and water. ''The study confirmed for us what we suspected,'' said Hugh Fowler, Washington director of emergency services. The report does not mean the debris dam on Spirit Lake will break, Mr. Fowler said. ''The likelihood of a breakout is very, very small,'' he said. ''We have Army Corps of Engineers pumping to thank for that.'' The corps has been pumping water out of Spirit Lake to keep it below the point at which the debris dam is considered unstable. The dam was formed by the eruption of Mount St. Helens on May 18, 1980. Even cities downstream from the volcano that now are protected by dikes, such as Longview and Kelso, would be hit by the mud, the report indicated. The finest journalism in Texas? THE VAJONT (Vaiont) LANDSLIDE
Dr David Petley
Figure 0: The Vajont landslide looking from upstream (image thanks to Professor E. Bromhead, University of Kingston)
INTRODUCTION
The Vajont reservoir disaster is a classic example of the consequences of the failure of engineers and geologists to understand the nature of the problem that they were trying to deal with. During the filling of the reservoir a block of approximately 270 million m detached from one wall and slid into the lake at velocities of up to 30 m sec (approx. 110 km h ). As a result a wave over topped the dam by 250 m and swept onto the valley below, with the loss of about 2500 lives. Remarkably the dam remained unbroken by the flood.
LOCATION AND BACKGROUND
Vajont is located in the south-eastern part of the Dolomite Region of the Italian Alps, about 100 km north of Venice (Fig. 1). It was built as a part of the on-going, post-war development of Italy in order to provide HEP for the rapidly-expanding northern cities of Milan, Turin and Modena. Whilst a proposal to site a dam at this location was made in the 1920's, excavation of the site began in 1956 and the dam was completed in 1960. The completed doubly curved arch dam was, at 265.5 metres above the valley floor, the worlds highest thin arch dam. The chord of the dam was 160 m, and the volume of impounded water was 115 million m
Figure 1: Schematic map of the location of the Vajont dam and reservoir
The dam was built across the Vajont Valley, a deep, narrow gorge. The geological setting of the valley was fully understood. In this area, the mountains tend to be characterised by massive, near-vertical cliffs formed in the Jurassic Dogger formation and underlying Triassic formations. The local valleys tend to be associated with outcrops of the weaker formations, particularly the Upper and Lower Cretaceous and Tertiary units, which contain more clays and are more thinly bedded. Thus the generalised geological structure is of a syncline cut by the valley (Fig. 2). The syncline is based in middle Jurassic limestone, overlain with successive layers of upper Jurassic limestone with clay and Cretaceous limestones.

97. Utah History Encyclopedia
A detailed history of the town and the 1983 landslide that destroyed it.
http://www.media.utah.edu/UHE/t/THISTLE.html
THISTLE In 1983 the town of Thistle, Utah, known to many highway travelers as the small community where both the Spanish Fork River and nearby U.S. highways branch, was eliminated by the most costly landslide on record in the United States. The town of Thistle expanded and contracted with the fortunes of the railroad. The town saw its heyday in the early 1900s. Six hundred residents lived in Thistle in 1917. Changing economics and technologies reduced the need for an active rail town with its large depot, water and coal supplies, roundhouse, and supporting stores, post office, schoolhouses, and saloon. The depot was torn down in 1972. Shops closed, and even the post office closed in 1974. A few families stayed; others moved in. In March 1983, fifty residents in a dozen houses claimed the town of Thistle as their home. Storms heralding the 1982 to 1986 wet cycle kicked off the wettest month ever recorded at the Salt Lake City International Airport in September 1982, and saturated the ground before the winter snows. The winter was neither exceptionally wet nor cold. However, snows and cold nights continued late into April and May 1983, and resulted in an unusually late and sudden snowmelt when temperatures did warm up. May snowpacks of northern Utah averaged two to three times their normal. Utah's landslide problems correlate with precipitation and snowmelt. Two large landslides in the early spring alerted geologic experts to the situation. The National Weather Service briefed local and national officials about the unusual conditions. Yet even with the geologic and climatic indicators, the events of April, May, and June caught the state by surprise.
