Welcome to the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol (WNCP) Aboriginal Languages and Cultures website. This website is one of the ways to support the implementation of the Common Curriculum Framework for Aboriginal Language and Culture Programs, Kindergarten to Grade 12: Western Canad i an Protocol for Collaboration in Basic Education document which was released in June 2000.
Vision of the Western and Northern Canadian Protocol Aboriginal Languages Project
Aboriginal peoples across western and northern Canada need to ensure the transmission of Aboriginal languages and cultures from the present generation to the next. There is a sense of urgency in capturing the knowledge of Elders and language speakers in their role as living libraries, "In many areas of Western Canada, Aboriginal languages are in danger of being lost. Unlike other languages, the Aboriginal languages cannot be revitalized or supported in other countries. The source of traditional knowledge and teaching is dying with the Elders. These languages belong in Canada. It is imperative that immediate actions be taken." The WNCP Aboriginal Languages and Cultures website is one way to support teaching and learning and to share information about learning resources.

25. Kazakh Adoptive Families: Language

Kazakh is the official language and principle native language of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It is also spoken in southern Siberia, northwestern China (Sinkiang-Uighur) and northwestern Mongolia. It is one of the most widely spoken Turkic languages in central Asia. An estimated 8 million people speak Kazakh: 6.5 million in Kazakhstan. Kazakh is a member of the Central Turkic group of languages, which is a sub-group of Common Turkic. Kazakh and the other Turkic languages are closely related to one another. Kazakh as it exists today began to take shape in the seventeenth century during the Modern Turkic Period. Kazakh possesses a rich and ancient tradition of oral poetry, but did not exist in any standard written form until the middle of the nineteenth century. Kazakh was written with the Arabic script until 1929; with the Roman alphabet from 1929 to 1940; and with the Cyrillic alphabet following Soviet occupation in 1940. This alphabet was modified slightly in 1954 and the Cyrillic now used employs the thirty three letters of standard Russian, plus several additional symbols for sounds specific to Kazakh. Kazakh has eight vowels, and twenty-five to twenty-six consonants. Words are usually stressed on the final syllable. The above information is taken from UCLA Language Material Project Language Profiles and is reprinted according to their guidelines.

Documentation of endangered languages and cultures in the Nigeria-Cameroon borderland
This project supported by the AHRC will run for a three and a half years from 1 Jan 2006. It will concentrate on endangered languages on the Nigeria-Cameroon borderland. The Nigeria-Cameroon borderland is one of the most linguistically diverse regions of the world, with many languages either near extinction or severely endangered. This project builds on previous work by the participants in surveying and documenting endangered languages in this region. One example is the language of the Somyewe, a small group of blacksmiths whose language and culture are on the verge of disappearing. Documentation of two other local languages will also be undertaken. Documentation will follow best practice procedures as developed by the EMELD initiative, and will be situated in context of the linguistic and cultural ecology of the region. The project is directed by Dr David Zeitlyn from the Anthropology Department, University of Kent, and it brings the Canadian linguist Bruce Connell to Kent. Dr Connell is an acknowledged expert in endangered languages, especially in Africa, and an authority on the langugaes of the Nigeria-Cameroon borderland.
In November 2006 Dr Connell was awarded the Silver Jubilee award for his work on and the support for the development of Nigerian languages by the Linguistic Association of Nigeria.

Mahabharata The Indian subcontinent consists of a number of separate linguistic communities each of which share a common language and culture. The people of India speak many languages and dialects which are mostly varieties of about 15 principal languages. Some Indian languages have a long literary history Sanskrit literature is more than 5,000 years old and Tamil 3,000 . India also has some languages that do not have written forms. There are 18 officially recognized languages in India (Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were added in 1992) and each has produced a literature of great vitality and richness. Though distinctive in parts, all stand for a homogeneous culture that is the essence of the great Indian literature. This is an evolution in a land of myriad dialects. The number of people speaking each language varies greatly. For example, Hindi has more than 250 million speakers, but relatively few people speak Andamanese. Although some of the languages are called "tribal" or "aboriginal" , their populations may be larger than those that speak some European languages. For example
