Laos Culture
Despite the fact that most travellers might already be aware or would have guessed that Laos culture is different from Western and other Asian cultures, some visitors to Laos are often frustrated and surprised by the extent of the differences. I hope the information on this page is useful and can (to some extent) help you prepare yourself for your cultural adventure. I believe that the more you learn and become aware of the Laos culture and the differences the better you will be able to cope as you travel or live in Laos. Laos has at least 49 ethnic groups and each of them preserves their own dialect, customs, culture and tradition. However, because over half the population are ethnic Lao (previously called Lao Loum ) this is obviously the most dominant group in Laos and the one that most people encounter as the Laos culture. The rich culture of Laos is rooted in immense spirituality, as the predominant religion of Theravada Buddhism has influences extending from lifestyle to art and architecture. This is encountered in ceremonies like the baci or Sou Khoun (a ceremony to enrich the spirit) and the common practice of alms giving every morning at sunrise.

Laos : Culture
Laos is a rural nation whose comparatively low population density has allowed the continuation of a village society reliant on subsistence agriculture. The deficiency of a national government infrastructure and effective transportation networks has also contributed to the relative freedom and autonomy of most villages. Residence in a village thus has been an valuable aspect of social identity, particularly for lowland Lao ethnic groups. For many upland ethnic groups, clan membership is a more valuable point of social identification. For all groups, the village community has a kinship nexus, although structures differ. Rice is the staple food for all Laotians, and most families and villages are able to produce enough or nearly enough each year for their own consumption. Education and social services remain rudimentary at best but are improving. In lowland villages orthodox education was provided to boys and young men through the Buddhist temples. Although this practice continues in some areas, in general it has been supplanted by a national education system which, unfortunately, is hampered by limited financial resources and a deficiency of trained teachers. Western medical care is seldom available outside provincial or a few district centers and even then is very limited. Child and infant mortality is high, and life expectancy is the lowest in Southeast Asia; the population, is increasing at a rapid rate. Since the end of World War II remarkable differences in education, health, and demographic conditions have prevailed among the ethnic groups and between rural and urban populations.

    About the People
    • Laos has a population of around 6.8 million. This includes around 4 million ethnic Lao and 2.8 million members of other distinct ethnic groups. The most significant non-Lao ethnic groups – all with populations over 100,00 - are the Khmu, Hmong, Lu, Phuan, and So. For this reason, Laos is generally considered to be one of South East Asia’s most diverse countries.
    The Food
    • Lao cuisine is different from the cuisine of other South East Asian nations. Staples include sticky rice and laap (a mixture of marinated meat or fish that is at times raw). The food in Laos varies greatly by region, and a distinct French influence can be found throughout the country. You’ll love the bread, especially in big cities like Vientiane. The variety of ingredients used in Lao cooking is eye-popping. Shredded papaya, tamarind, ginger, rice, fish sauce, are among dozens of ingredients commonly used in Lao dishes. Lao meals often include fresh vegetables and herbs.

    How to organize the ceremony.

The term "Watsa" means the rain or rainy season. the monks complete the practices of Buddha teachings during the period of three months in the rainy season without spending any nights in other places. On the 1st day of the dark moon of the eleventh month the closing ceremony for Buddhist Lent should be arranges. But, in practice, it is organized in the full moon of the fifteen in the eleventh month, one day before the due date. In the Buddha's teaching, the closing ceremony for Buddhist Lent was not decided, but Pavalana, prior notice ceremony was instead made after three months of Buddhist lent ended. So, in practice the monks made Pavalana on the evening of the full moon of the fifteen in the eleventh month. It is one day before the real closing date.
After the decision is made, the oldest monk sits on his knees, joins his hands and says Pavalana in front the others in Pali language : "To you all the monks, may I notice you in advance and do not in doubt that I made mistakes or sins caused by a breach of the rules of the monastic order (Patimakkha), please warn me, to change my bad behaviour for proper behaviour acting." Then all the monks have to say the same words until its completion. The monks who completed the Buddhist Lent, can gain Anisong 5, merit making.

Sabaidee! That means "Hello" in Laos. Welcome to one of the friendliest countries on the planet. These 10 suggestions will help you enjoy your visit, while helping us preserve our culture and traditions. Temples are beautiful and interesting, but most of all, they are holy places. Please visit, but dress appropriately, covering shoulders, knees, and everything in between. (Yes, that stomach too!) Whether in a temple or on the street, women who wear a traditional sihn (long skirt) will find the gesture much appreciated. In Buddhist cultures, the head is high, and the feet are low. Use your feet only for walking. (Okay, we'll make an exception if you're a kick-boxer!) Pointing your feet at someone – for example, by putting your feet up on a stool – is rude. So is stepping over someone seated on the floor. Fewer local people give alms in the morning than in the past. Cameras flash in their faces at a time when they only wanted to quietly practice their faith. Any time you see our culture hurt by a thoughtless individual, please speak up. If you wish to participate in giving alms, by all means do so, but don't just get up early and buy some rice from a street vendor. First, please learn about this ancient tradition. Information is posted in many temples.

The performance of the soukhouane evokes the history, the mythology and cosmology that have existed since the halcyons days of our ancestors.
