Last updated : Nov 2009 Laos History The Chinese from the north occupied Laos in the 4th and 5th centuries AD. It was subject to strong laosian influence from the 8th century and beyond and subsequently adopted Buddhism . Laos was part of the Khmer Angkor Empire for over 200 years from the beginning of the 11th century. It was during that time that the Laotian, who originated in Thailand, took over the area and replaced the dominant Chinese. However, some evidence exists that the Mongol empire had some influence over what happened in the region in the late 13th and early 14th centuries, likely in alliance with the Angkor kingdom.

Early History to Independence
The Laotians are descendants of Thai tribes that were pushed southward from Yunnan, China, in the 13th cent. and gradually infiltrated the territory of the Khmer Empire In the early 19th cent. Siam was dominant over the two Laotian kingdoms, although Siamese claims were disputed by Annam. After French explorations in the late 19th cent. Siam was forced (1893) to recognize a French protectorate over Laos, which was incorporated into the union of Indochina . During World War II, Laos was gradually occupied by the Japanese, who in 1945 persuaded the king of Luang Phabang to declare the country's independence. In 1946 the French reestablished dominion over Laos, recognizing the king as constitutional monarch of the entire country. The French granted an increasing measure of self-government, and in 1949 Laos became a semiautonomous state within the French Union. In 1951, a Communist Laotian nationalist movement, the Pathet Lao, was formed by Prince Souphanouvong in North Vietnam. In 1953, Pathet Lao guerrillas accompanied a Viet Minh invasion of Laos from Vietnam and established a government at Samneua in N Laos. That year Laos attained full sovereignty; admission into the United Nations came in 1955.

Agriculturist society seemed to appear during the 4th millenia BC as evidences have been found by archeologists- jar burials and other kinds of sepulchres have revealed a complex society in which Bronze objects appeared around 1500 BD and iron tools were known since 700 BC. The proto historic period is characterized by contacts with Chinese and Indian civilizations. As a result between the forth and eighth century. Between the fourth and eighth century communities along the Mekong river began to form into townships, so-called muang. This development culminated in the formation of the Lane Xang (million elephants) kingdom in 1353 by King FaNgum and established Xieng Thong now know as Luang Prabang to capital of Lane Xang Kingdom.

    Laos History
The country has long been occupied by migrating Thais (including Shans, Siamese and Lao) and slash-and-burn Hmong/Mien hill tribes. The first Lao principalities were consolidated in the 13th century following the invasion of southwest China by Kublai Khan's Mongol hordes. In the mid-14th century, a Khmer-sponsored warlord, Fa Ngum, combined a number of scattered principalities around Luang Prabang to form his own kingdom, Lan Xang ('a million elephants'). The kingdom initially prospered, but internal divisions and pressure from neighbours caused it to split in the 17th century into three warring kingdoms centred on Luang Prabang, Wieng Chan (Vientiane) and Champasak. By the end of the 18th century, most of Laos came under Siamese (Thai) suzerainty but the territory was also being pressured by Vietnam. Unable or unwilling to serve two masters, the country went to war with Siam in the 1820s. This disastrous ploy led to all three kingdoms falling under Thai control. By the late 19th century, France had established French Indochina in the Vietnamese provinces of Tonkin and Annam. The Thais eventually ceded all of Laos to the French, who were content to use the territory merely as a buffer between its colonial holdings and Siam.

Laos History
The history of Laos is mostly the history of domination and colonial rule. The original people of Laos were of Austroasiatic group who had mastered the skills to survive in this region without agriculture and were comfortable with the landscape. However Laos’s history was first recorded and grew in importance during the rule of Lan Xang. The kingdom of Lan Xang was in full control of Laos for about three centuries. It emerged in the mid of the 14th century and finally declined in the 17th century. It was the king of this dynasty who was responsible for the introduction of Buddhism in this country which is now the most popular religion of Laos
After the complete fall of the Lan Xang dynasty the other power which took over the control of Laos is the Siam or the Siamese dynasty of Thailand. After the eviction of the Siam dynasty Laos went under the long colonial rule of the French. After Second World War the Laos was free from the French rule. Even after independence Laos was under the influence of United States of America and from 1975 the impact of Vietnamese authority was witnessed.

Laos : History
Historical research shows that the rudimentary structures of a multiethnic state existed before the founding of the Kingdom of Lan Xang in the thirteenth century. These prethirteenth-century structures consisted of small confederative communities in river valleys and among the mountain peoples, who found security away from the well-traveled rivers and overland tracks where the institutions and customs of the Laotian people were gradually forged in contact with other peoples of the region. During these centuries, the stirring of migrations as well as religious conflict and syncretism went on more or less continuously. Laos's shortlived vassalage to foreign empires such as the Cham, Khmer, and Sukhothai did nothing to discourage this process of cultural identification and, in fact, favored its shaping. In the 13th centuryan historically valuable watershed- -the rulers of Louangphrabang (Luang Prabang) constituted a large indigenous kingdom with a hierarchical administration. Even then, migratory and religious crosscurrents never really ceased. The durability of the kingdom itself is attested to by the fact that it lasted within its original borders for almost four centuries. Today, the Lao People's Democratic Republic covers only a small portion of the territory of that former kingdom. In late 1975, months after the fall of Cambodia and the Republic of Vietnam to the communists, the Pathet Lao came to power in Laos, proclaiming that Laos's territorial integrity as well as its freedom, sovereignty, and solidarity with other new regimes of Indochina, would be defended. In a demonstration of this determination, Laos fought a border war with Thailand in 1988, and protracted negotiations were necessary to demarcate the border between the two countries. Internally, the regime proved ruthless in stamping out political and armed opposition. Only since the introduction of the New Economic Mechanism in 1986 has the government made some headway in the long and difficult process of bettering the lives of its citizens.

Lan Xang Kingdom
Fa Ngum, a Laotian Prince who had been exiled into Cambodia from a young age and had married a daughter of the Khmer King, set out from Khmer territory in the mid-14th Century with a large army to re-gain control of the parts of Laos which had fallen to the Sukhothai. In 1354 he was crowned King of Lan Xang Hom Khao (Land of a Million Elephants and the White Parasol) Kingdom in Vientiane and the first unified Lao Kingdom was formed. The Kingdom extended from the border of China to Southern Laos near Don Khong (nearby the present Cambodian border), and during that period was one of the largest kingdoms in Southeast Asia. The Kingdom of Lan Xang remained largely unified and powerful over the following centuries, fighting off invasions from Vietnam, Siam and Burma until the early 18th Century, when Luang Prabang, Vientiane and Champassak separated into three separate kingdoms as a result of internal divisions and power struggles.

Laos History
For much of its history, Laos has been under the thumb of its neighbors - at various times the Cambodians, Burmese, Vietnamese, Chinese, and Siamese (Thais). The result is that Laos has experienced great difficulty in establishing a national identity. The earliest inhabitants of Laos were migrants from southern China. From the 11 th century onward, parts of Laos fell under the Khmer Empire, and later under Siamese influence from the Sukhothai dynasty. With the fall of Sukhothai in 1345, the first kingdom of Laos emerged under Fa Ngum, a Lao prince brought up in the court of Angkor Wat. As the Khmer Empire crumbled, Fa Ngum welded together a new empire, which he modestly christened 'Lan Xang' - the Land of a Million Elephants. Lan Xang covered the whole of present-day Laos plus most of Issan (northeast Thailand). Fa Ngum declared himself king of the realm in 1353. Fa Ngum was unable to subdue the unruly highlanders of the northeast regions; these remained independent of Lan Xang Rule. Upon Fa Ngum's marriage to a Cambodian princess, the Khmer court gave the Lao king a sacred gold Buddha called Pra Bang. Fa Ngum made Buddhism the state religion, and Pra Bang became the protector of the Lao kingdom. Nobility pledged allegiance to the king before the statue. Named after Pra Bang was the city of Luang Prabang, the cradle of Lao culture and the centre of the Lao state for the next 200 years.
