A roundup of Latin American comics
As a supplement to my page on European comics , here's a sampling of Latin American comics (both Spanish and Portuguese). Where do you find these? Well, Mafalda can be found or ordered in any Spanish-language bookstore. For just about everything else... good luck, you'll need it. I got most of these in Latin America. Suggestions are welcome. When I get another shot at a scanner I'll put up some more sample panels. Also, I've only browsed some of these; I'll fill in fuller reports as I get through them. The four best of these, in my opinion: Mafalda Fontannarosa Ed Mort , and Vasques's Sottovoce

CHANGE OF PARADIGM? THE 'NEW' LATIN AMERICAN THEATRE AND THE CONSTITUTION OF THEATRICAL POSTMODERNITY
0. GENERALITIES

Latin American theatre has been characterized and identified for decades, rightly or wrongly, from an almost exclusively socio-political point of view; it has been measured and evaluated as to its ideological message, as to whether or not is 'compromised', this still being the case up until the present day. The reasons for this situation are of varying origin. On the one hand, it springs from the theatre itself, or rather, from one given conception of theatre. It seems that theatre has been conditioned by its medium of expression to a degree unparalleled in either poetry or the novel, at least not to the same degree and duration. What Fernando de Toro (up until recently, a voice crying in the wilderness) has been repeating for the last decade, has to do with the lack of mediatization, the lack of artistic structure, in Latin American dramatic production in general. He has been calling for a mediatization that would return the theatre to the theatre, and lift it out of what has been its role in many cases, a vehicle for ideologies - however legitimate or illegitimate, however necessary or unnecessary - ideologies determined by whatever given, inevitable historical circumstances of the day. His view is one that is beginning to gain momentum. What we see as 'new' in the theatre is a growing awareness among theatre-people of their role as artisans of dramatic production, as architects of signs, as visualizers of gesture, and not just as producers of text to be spoken out loud, or as was often the case, declaimed.

Ceviche Recipes
Ceviche/Seviche
The Marinade
Variations in the flavor of seviche depend upon the particular citrus juice or combination of juices and the other ingredients used in the marinade. the marinade juice could be lemon, lime, or sour orange, or a combination of two, or even all three juices. the acid in the citrus juice and the action of salt called for in recipes prevent the growth of micro-organisms in the fish, softening the fibers as they penetrate. The enhancing ingredients - hot peppers, green peppers, garlic, and onion - give seviche its pleasing gusto.
Each Latin American country has given seviche/ceviche its own touch of individuality by adding its own particular garnishes. In Peru, seviche is served with slices of cold sweet potatoes or corn-on-the-cob, while in neighboring Ecuador, it is accompanied by popcorn, potato chips, nuts, or the giant kernels of corn native to that country. Panamanian businesses serve seviche with buttered saltine crackers or in dainty pastry shells. It is also served in a large crystal bowl with the guests helping themselves, either by spearing it with toothpicks or filling the pastry shells. In Mexico, seviche is accompanied by slices of raw onions and served on toasted tortillas.
Here is a version of seviche which Japanese housewives were making hundreds of years ago. They call it

    excerpted from the book
State Terrorism and the United States
From Counterinsurgency to the War on Terrorism
    by Frederick H. Gareau
    Clarity Press, 2004, paper
Terrorism consists of deliberate acts of a physical and/or psychological nature perpetrated on select groups of victims. Its intent is to mold the thinking and behavior not only of these targeted groups, but more importantly, of larger sections of society that identify or share the views and aspirations of the targeted groups or who might easily be led to do so. The intent of the terrorists is to intimidate or coerce both groups by causing them intense fear, anxiety, apprehension, panic, dread, and/or horror. Obviously, the groups that have been directly targeted experience these emotions to a much higher degree than the larger sections of society that the terrorism is also intended to intimidate and coerce. The overall purpose of terrorism is to intimidate and coerce, not to eliminate a group physically or socially. The latter is called genocide.
Washington publishes an annual list of governments that it alleges terrorists. Typically, this list contains a majority of governments of Arab states - Iran, Cuba, and North Korea. This highlights the importance of how terrorism defined. If state terrorism were included in the definition, Washington would halve to include itself on the list!

‘Ruling Uruguay is like child birth’ On 11 November, the Uruguayan political weekly ‘Búsqueda’ published an interview with President José Mujica in a special issue celebrating the 25th anniversary of the country’s return to democracy in 1985. Well known for his candid and honest interviews prior to assuming the presidency last March, Mujica appears to have returned to form, giving open answers that included harsh criticisms of domestic and foreign policy makers alike. His disparagement of the economic policies pursued in neighbouring Argentina by President Cristina Fernández generated hundreds of newspaper headlines on the west bank of the River Plate at a very sensitive juncture. The deputy foreign ministers of both countries are currently in bilateral negotiations regarding joint oversight of the environmental impact of the UPM (formerly Botnia) paper mill, but the talks are again deadlocked.
